Cross-Border Restaurant Patronage

ABSTRACT

This research takes a cross-cultural view of the variables influencing dining consumers' perception of the attractiveness of a neighboring country as a venue for dining, and satisfaction with the cross-border dining experience. Specifically, it studies consumers' attractiveness perceptions of neighboring country restaurants as a venue for dining and satisfaction, with the cross-border dining experience as a function of three key individual-difference variables associated with Western and Asian consumers. In a survey of 636 cross-border diners at United States/Canada and Hong Kong/China borders, perceptions of attractiveness and satisfaction were found to vary as a function of variables associated with the cultural attributes of individualism/collectivism, uncertainty avoidance, and time perspective.     

Attracting cross-border venture capital: the role of a local investor

Examining an increasingly prevalent but under-researched phenomenon, cross-border venture capital investments, it is observed that local venture capitalists typically invest first, followed by foreign venture capitalists in later rounds. A model is developed that explains the role of a domestic venture capital investor in attracting foreign investors and which also accounts for the impact of various circumstances on the importance of this role. In our model based on analysis of nine cross-border venture capital-backed companies, local venture capitalists have several important roles in increasing the venture's cross-border investment readiness including advice to operational management and contributing contacts and local market knowledge. The importance of these roles is mitigated if the entrepreneurial team is highly experienced or if the home market is not important for the venture. The prominence of the local investor has signalling value. Finally, the local investor's international social capital facilitates the formation of cross-border syndicates. Overall, the model developed in the paper contributes to a better understanding of cross-border venture capital and in particular to the division of labour between domestic and foreign venture capitalists in international venture capital syndicates. The paper also contributes to the emerging literature on international social capital.

Foreign Takeovers and Wages in Hungary

This study investigates the wage premium that foreign takeover firms pay for a type of worker on top of the wage before takeover. We apply Hungarian employee-employer matched data from 1992 until 2001, and find a nonlinear wage premium profile before and after a foreign takeover. Takeover targets do not pursue a different wage policy before ownership change compared to other indigenous firms. Then, there is a hike in the wage premium during the takeover year. Moreover, there is gradually building up a wage premium over the following years after the takeover. The later stylized fact helps discriminating bargaining theories of the foreign-investor wage premium from technology spillover theories. JEL no. E24, F16, F23

过境交付服务贸易的发展及其自由化问题初探

过境交付是四种服务贸易模式中与其他模式最显著不同的一种。这种最类似于货物贸易的国际服务贸易的成长,打破了服务总是需要人或物为载体,服务本身不能被存储和独立运输的传统观念,提高了服务的可贸易性,对推动全球服务贸易的发展具有极为重要的意义。全球电子商务和服务外包的蓬勃发展,原本不占服务贸易重要地位的过境交付贸易迎来了发展新机遇。在电子商务被引入多哈回合的谈判后,与电子商务密切相关的过境交付自由化问题也引起全球关注。

影响我国农产品期货效率的国际化因素与对策

为了进一步促进我国农产品期货市场的完善和发展,推动我国农产品期货市场国际化,并在国际农产品期货市场中具有世界影响力,对影响我国农产品期货市场效率的国际化因素进行了具体分析,指出当前我国农产品期货市场在国际化、开展跨境业务等方面存在的一些问题。提出逐步允许更多的国内公司直接参与国际期货交易．逐步拓展国内期货公司代理国外期货交易以及探索国外投资者参与国内期货交易的途径等具体政策建议。     

所有权原则、FDI利得与中美贸易差额

在发达国家大量通过FDI参与国际商业活动的背景下,基于所有权原则的贸易收支统计能够捕捉FDI对贸易收支的影响,从而反映出各国参与国际商业活动的实际利得。根据测算,美国自2000年以来外国直接投资净收益约占其贸易赤字的25%~30%。同时基于所有权统计原则调整后发现,中美贸易顺差根源于FDI,这与现有有关中美贸易不平衡的研究结论大相径庭。     

中国企业跨国并购文化整合的模式选择

随着经济全球化趋势的不断深化,跨国并购已成为中国企业迅速国际化的一条捷径。然而,跨国并购的绩效并不乐观,缺乏有效的文化整合是跨国并购失败的一个重要原因。因此,本文在Nahavandi和Malekzadeh文化整合模式的基础上,纳入国家文化差异和跨文化优势这两个因素,并结合中国企业跨国并购的特性来分析中国企业跨国并购文化整合的模式及其选择过程。
