In the June 1977 issue of the American Economic Review extraordinary attention was given to the statistical problem of measuring the effect on inequality in current income arising from differences associated with age. The method adopted by Paglin was severely criticized although everyone recognized the value of Paglin's unusual, if not original, emphasis on the importance of the underlying issue. This paper is not primarily concerned with the statistical problem of correcting data on current income distributions for income-age differences. It is concerned mainly with the lifetime income perspective itself-with ways of viewing the long-term path of persons and of ways of viewing inequalities in that path as they develop within and among different generations. The paper discusses issues of measurement on a birth-cohort or longitudinal basis, recent trends for selected cohorts, intra-and inter-cohort variances in lifetime income, and various policy issues, for example, the equity of the U.S. Social Security System viewed on a lifetime dimension.  相似文献

The Lomé Convention signed in 1975 between the European Economic Community (EEC) and 46 African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) States, was hailed as a model for a New International Economic Order. This article analyses the trade between the two groupings during the five years (1975–1979) of the first Convention, in the context of world trade. In general there was no substantial change in trade flows. Contrary to ACP aspirations for an improvement in their export performance with the Europeans, the EEC share of ACP exports declined. Despite the Convention's provisions, the ACP even failed to maintain their shares of the EEC market, actually faring worse than other non-oil LDCs. Little diversification was achieved in ACP exports. In contrast, the EEC maintained its position in ACP markets.  相似文献

Turnaround champions--those leaders who manage to bring distressed organizations back from the brink of failure--are often acclaimed for their canny financial and strategic decision making. But having studied their work closely, Harvard Business School's Rosabeth Moss Kanter emphasizes another aspect of their achievement. These leaders reverse the cycle of corporate decline through deliberate interventions that increase the level of communication, collaboration, and respect among their managers. Ailing companies descend into what Kanter calls a "death spiral," which typically works this way: After an initial blow to the company's fortunes, people begin pointing fingers and deriding colleagues in other parts of the business. Tensions rise and collaboration declines. Once they are no longer acting in concert, people find themselves less able to effect change. Eventually, many come to believe they are helpless. Passivity sets in. Finally, the ultimate pathology of troubled companies takes hold: denial. Rather than volunteer an opinion that no one else seems to share, people engage in collective pretense to ignore what they individually know. To counter these dynamics, Kanter says, and reverse the company's slide, the CEO needs to apply certain psychological interventions--specifically, replacing secrecy and denial with dialogue, blame and scorn with respect, avoidance and turf protection with collaboration, and passivity and helplessness with initiative. The author offers in-depth accounts of how the CEOs at Gillette, Invensys, and the BBC used these interventions to guide their employees out of corporate free fall and onto a more productive path.  相似文献

This research aims to compare the needs of nightclub and bar customers from two very different markets—the existing and well-established British late-night economy and emerging and developing Polish market by examining customer preferences towards the servicescape and service offerings provided by such venues in both countries. The findings point to the significant similarities and differences between British and Polish club goers, indicating the importance of various elements of the servicescape in influencing customer decisions to enter a venue. These findings can assist mainstream venues in the UK and Poland improve their competitive position by understanding and then providing both groups of customers with service offerings that match their preferences.  相似文献

Economists treat the ‘market’ as a black box in which prices rise and fall to equate supplies with demands. Obviously, however, markets are usually collections of institutions. Using conventional methods of economic analysis, it is argued that certain physical characteristics of commodities, the technologies of their production and use, and buyer and seller concentration lead to the development of particular institutional arrangements composing markets. These institutional arrangements are efficient in the sense that they require the least use of resources in effecting transactions.  相似文献
