Job protection,housing market regulation,and the youth

Young Europeans experience high unemployment rates, job instability, and late emancipation. Meanwhile, they do not support reforms weakening protection on long‐term contracts. In this paper, we suggest a possible rationale for such reform distaste. When the rental market is strongly regulated, landlords screen applicants with regard to their ability to pay the rent. Protecting regular jobs offers a second‐best technology to sort workers, thereby increasing the rental market size. We provide a model where nonemployed workers demand protected jobs despite unemployment and the share of short‐term jobs increases, whereas the individual risk of dismissal is unaffected. Our theory can be extended to alternative risks and markets involving correlated risks and commitment under imperfect information.

Are We Sending Mixed Messages? How Philosophical Naturalism Erodes Ethical Instruction

To develop critical thinking skills, higher order ethical reasoning, a better grasp of the implications of ethical decisions, and a basis for ethical knowledge, it is necessary to explore the philosophical premises foundational to one’s ethical persuasion. No philosophical premises are more important than those pertaining to the nature of human personhood and business’ responsibility to respect the inherent value of human beings. Philosophical naturalism assigns the essence of human personhood strictly to causal interactions of physical matter. Substance dualism, on the other hand, posits both a physical aspect and an immaterial substance to personhood, interacting within the totality of each being. This paper argues for the logical superiority of substance dualism in achieving the overriding objective of discerning ethical knowledge. Substance dualism offers a better explanation – and one that more closely follows the way most people commonly experience themselves and others–than naturalism for free agency and accountability, meaningful moral standards, confidence in knowing what ethical decisions to make, and the moral drive residing in conscience. The new post-industrial state

With the socioeconomic restructuring of the 1970s and 1980s, the idea of a smooth transition to a post-industrial service economy has required significant revision. We outline three such revisions: the ideas of informatization, informalization, and dualism. The first two are reworkings of post-industrial theory so as to emphasize one or other undervalued trend in industrial society, and are in principle quite compatible. The third emphasizes inequalities in power and resources that are plausibly associated with developments seen as benign by the others. Each has distinct implications for democratic development. However, we argue that while elements of all three models are present in current trends, so that the future might be best seen as a compromise between them, in fact all approaches fail to grasp the real significance of socioeconomic and technological restructuring. A more fruitful approach, with distinctive policy implications, is proposed.

论违约责任的归责原则

违约责任的归责原则主要有严格责任原则和过错责任原则。违约责任的归责原则应当是二元论,即过 错责任与无过错责任并存,并有各自的调整范围和适用领域。

本项研究通过对一家法国跨国集团在其中国子公司实施集团管理战略,推行集团管理模式的实践活动进行考察,来试图弄清楚这家法国跨国集团有关权力行使的管理理念和模式,是怎样影响中国员工的行为的。通过质化的跨文化比较研究,探讨中法不同文化下的权威观。最终得出对一种管理文化的研究,不是用那些抽象、绝对意义上的,看似＂普遍＂的理念为之定性、归类,而应该主要考察这些理念是如何在特定的文化背景中被解读,如何在其共同生活和工作的方式中被赋予实际意义的,这样才有助于实现对管理实践的改进的结论。     

New financial elites,or financial dualism in historical perspective? An extended reply to Folkman,Froud, Johal and Williams

This paper challenges the recent suggestion that a new financial elite has evolved which is able to capture substantial profit shares for itself. Specifically, it questions the assumption that new groups of financial intermediaries have increased in significance primarily because there is evidence that various types of financial speculators have played a similarly extensive role at several junctures of economic development. The paper then develops the alternative hypothesis that, rather than being a recent development, the rise of these financial intermediaries is a cyclical phenomenon which is linked to specific regimes of capital accumulation. The hypothesis is underpinned by historical data from the US National Income and Product Accounts for the period from 1930 to 2000, which suggest that the activities of `mainstream' financial intermediaries have been accompanied by the frequently countercyclical activities of a `speculative' sector of security and commodity brokers. Based on the combination of this qualitative and quantitative evidence, the paper concludes that the rise of a speculative financial sector is a potentially recurrent phenomenon which is linked to periods of economic restructuring and turmoil.     

论交易效率改进、自由选择与二元经济转型

本文通过三种产品的非线性模型再现杨小凯的城市化及二元经济理论,并讨论杨小凯在三种产品线性模型中省略了的不完全分工结构及存在户籍限制下的城乡人均真实收入差异问题。在实行二元经济转型的城乡统筹发展战略中,应该牢牢抓住提高分工水平这一经济发展的根本途径;城镇对提高全社会分工水平和人均真实收入具有重要意义,各地应根据不同情况选择合适的城市发展模式,加快城镇的发展;取消限制农村劳动力向城镇转移的户籍制度,消除对农民的歧视政策,降低农民进城的交易成本,为以非农收入为主的农民进入城镇创造便利条件;把农村基础设施建设摆在促进城乡交易效率改进、提高社会分工水平进而实现二元经济转型的战略地位,加快其发展进程。
