Perceptions of the benefits of the A3 planner in facilitating project-based learning in accounting education

This paper evaluates ways of instilling project management skills into accounting-based learning by the use of an iterative A3 planner to plan, monitor and review assignment progress. The application of an A3 planner to facilitate a project-based learning (PBL) group assignment in undergraduate accounting education has been critically evaluated in terms of both the student and tutor experience. The study uses a mix of qualitative and quantitative data. Quantitative data assisting exploration of perceptions were collected through 100 undergraduate students. A series of focus group discussions were carried out to investigate students’ engagement and tutors’ teaching experiences regarding the adoption of the A3 planner. The results suggest that the A3 planner promotes active planning and effective management of a PBL group assignment. It makes students’ thought processes more visible thereby facilitating and enhancing the tutoring/mentoring process. Moreover a more interactive and transparent approach by doing assignment via the use of an iterative A3 planner has ensured more feedback points and action based efficiency in the doing approach for learners.     

Who gets the job? First-generation college students' perceptions of employer screening methods

What are first-generation college students' (FGCS) perspectives of employment screening methods? The authors investigate which methods FGCS believe are likely to cause an employer to extend a job offer and which methods yield the best pool of job applicants. Survey data were collected from undergraduate business majors. They were analyzed using means comparisons and bivariate correlation t tests. FGCS perceived resumes and interviews as most likely to help applicants get hired. Implications are discussed.     

一种基于自适应相似矩阵的谱聚类算法

为了消除在构建谱聚类算法的相似矩阵时,高斯核函数中尺度参数的波动影响,构建了一种自适应相似矩阵,并应用到谱聚类算法中。自适应相似矩阵中数据点间的距离度量采用测地距离算法,相距较近的两点间的距离近似于欧氏距离,相距较远的两点则先根据欧氏距离得到每个数据点的k个近邻点,然后累加近邻点的测地距离,由此得到每对数据点间的最短距离。两点间的局部密度用共享近邻的定义来表示,更好地刻画了数据集的本征结构。在5个人工数据集和国际通用UCI数据库中的5个真实数据集上进行实验。实验结果表明,所提算法的聚类准确率高于对比算法的准确率,对复杂分布数据有很强的自适应能力。研究成果为数据挖掘及机器学习提供了思路和方法。     

Early labor market outcomes of university graduates: Does time to degree matter?

Using university administrative and survey data drawn from the AlmaLaurea Consortium, we analyze the effect of time to degree on the early labor market performance of Italian graduates. The empirical strategy allows identifying separately the impact of elapsed time to degree on the transition from university to work and on earnings from other determinants specific to the academic path completed. Findings suggest that delayed graduation reduces the employment probability (0.8% points for each year of delay), and this effect is still persistent five years after graduation. Once employed, graduates not completing their degree within the minimum period are also penalized in their net monthly earnings, even five years after graduation. The most penalized groups are women and graduates in non-scientific fields.
