We empirically analyze the impact of product market competition on the responsiveness of inflation to macroeconomic imbalances. If competition is high the response of inflation to lagged inflation, unemployment and import prices is reduced, while inflation is more responsive to changes in productivity growth in countries in which competition is above the OECD average. Given the (‘good luck’) macroeconomic trajectories of the 1990s–2000s, the structural reforms that made goods markets more competitive improved the ability of OECD economies to smooth (dis)inflationary shocks, while changes in the monetary policy framework had a modest role in taming inflation during the Great Moderation. 相似文献

Identifying the factors that contribute to the success of new ventures is a difficult and challenging task. In that respect,
this paper proposes an analysis of the intellectual capital within new business ventures. Based on the study of a sample of
130 new companies, for the purpose of this work we have analysed the influence of the proposed intangible assets on the success
of newly-created organizations, acknowledging the key role of the human and relational capital in the first few years of the
life of the business. 相似文献

This study seeks to highlight the key role played by relational capital in new business start‐ups. Following a review of previous research examining the success factors of new ventures and the role played by intellectual capital, our study sets out to achieve this objective by analyzing the impact of a set of intangible relational assets on the initial success of new business start‐ups. Based on a study of 130 firms, we analyzed six hypotheses regarding the possible positive relationship between the relational capital of a start‐up company and its success in its first few years of business. 相似文献

In recent years, there has been an increase in empirical and theoretical work that addresses the role of innovation as one of the main sources of firm growth. The purpose of this special issue is to strengthen the role played by innovation as a determinant of firm growth. Despite the emergence of a vast empirical literature on whether innovative firms grow more quickly in terms of sales and employees, a number of crucial questions and answers remain. While a large number of applied papers observe a positive link between innovation and firm growth, the complexity of R&D activities, together with the diversity of innovation strategies and the multiplicity of growth modes, requires a multidimensional approach to examine the contribution of innovations on firm growth. To shed light on the link between firm’ growth and innovation sources, we organized a meeting of leading scholars of firm’ growth and innovation. The papers of this special issue were presented at the workshop on ‘Firm growth and innovation’ held on 28 and 29 June, 2012, in Tarragona, Spain. The papers that compose this special issue deal in depth with innovation activity, firm growth and the interaction between firm growth and innovation. 相似文献

In this article we analyse whether the Ricardian equivalence hypothesis is a valid approximation for Spains economic reality or whether there exist deviations from that situation which would be more in line with the conventional Keynesian perspective of the effects of debt on private consumption-savings decisions. Our aim is to contribute to the rather sparse empirical literature on the subject for the Spanish case. The analysis is based on annual aggregate data for Spain covering the years 1955 to 2000, and uses both the structural and the Euler equation approaches to test the neutrality proposition, and is thus to be considered as a generalization of foregoing work on the Spanish economy. The findings indicate that support for Ricardian equivalence is mixed, while we also find very little support for the Keynesian specification of consumption and fiscal policy.First revision received: March 2003 / Final version received: October 2003The authors wish to thank M. Ferré, J.M. González-Páramo, A. Marchante, P. Meguire, F. Pedraja, J.L. Raymond, J. Salinas and two anonymous referees for their helpful comments and suggestions on this paper. High rates of firm births and deaths are a pervasive phenomenon across industries and territories. Most studies have related the great turbulence at the fringe of practically all manufacturing industries to positive effects on the long-run performance of industries. According to these views business turbulence, although it has a relatively small incidence on net entry, leads to allocative improvement and stimulates innovation. The existing set of empirical studies does not reach clear conclusions, however, and many questions are still open. Our contribution analyses the relationship between business dynamics in manufacturing and the growth of total factor productivity in industries and regions. After a review of current literature on entry and exit it is argued that most models are tailored to suit the processes observed in industries and regions that are near the technological frontier, and we propose an approach that could be more representative of middle range economies such as Spain. According to this approach new firms are seen more as users of innovations than producers of innovations. We adopt a model based on a vintage capital framework in which new entrants embody the edge technologies available and exiting businesses are supposed to represent the most marginal obsolete plants. Both industries and regions are represented by a Hall's type production function which controls for imperfect competition and economies of scale. The results show that both entry and exit rates contribute positively to the growth of total factor productivity in industries and in regions. 相似文献

This paper draws on a sample of innovative Catalan firms to identify how two main sources of innovation – internal R&D and external R&D acquisition – affect productivity in the manufacturing and service industries. The sample comprises 1612 innovative firms from the fourth European Community Innovation Survey (CIS-4) during the period 2002–2004. We compare empirical results when applying the usual OLS and quantile regression techniques controlling with a non-parametric sample selection. Our results indicate the different patterns that are attributable to the two sources of innovation as we move up from lower to higher conditional quantiles. First, the marginal effect of internal R&D on productivity decreased as we moved up to higher productivity levels. Second, the marginal effect of external R&D acquisition increased as we moved up to higher productivity levels. Finally, empirical results show significant complementarities between internal and external R&D, which are higher for knowledge-intensive service sectors. 相似文献

This article presents a new model which will show whether a local authority is heading for financial trouble. The model is simple for national audit bodies to use and provides an early warning of financial tensions allowing corrective action to be taken before there is a crisis. 相似文献

The Determinants of Entry are not Independent of Start-up Size: Some Evidence from Spanish Manufacturing 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Josep-Maria Arauzo-Carod Agustí Segarra-Blasco 《Review of Industrial Organization》2005,27(2):147-165
In this paper we explore the determinants of firm start-up size of Spanish manufacturing industries. The industries’ barriers
to entry affect the ability of potential entrants to enter the markets and the size range at which they decide to enter. In
order to examine the relationships between barriers to entry and size we applied the quantile regression techniques. Our results
indicate that the variables that characterize the structure of the market, the variables that are related to the behaviour
of the incumbent firms and the rate of growth of the industries generate different barriers depending on the initial size
of the entrants.

The present paper analyses the link between firms’ decisions to innovate and the barriers that prevent them from being innovative.
The aim is twofold. First, it analyses three groups of barriers to innovation: the cost of innovation projects, lack of knowledge
and market conditions. Second, it presents the main steps taken by Catalan Government to promote the creation of new firms
and to reduce barriers to innovation. The data set used is based on the 2004 official innovation survey of Catalonia which
was taken from the Spanish CIS4 sample. This sample includes individual information on 2,954 Catalan firms in manufacturing
industries and knowledge-intensive services (KIS). The empirical analysis reveals pronounced differences regarding a firm’s
propensity to innovate and its perception of barriers. Moreover, the results show that cost and knowledge barriers seem to
be the most important and that there are substantial sectoral differences in the way that firms react to barriers. The results
of this paper have important implications for the design of future public policy to promote entrepreneurship and innovation
together.
