Industry measures of offshoring of material inputs are often generated using the proportionality assumption applied to aggregate import data—that the import share of each commodity used in the production process for a particular industry is similar to the import share of a commodity for the total economy. This note compares estimates of offshoring for the Canadian manufacturing sector derived using this assumption to four alternatives: two measures that use direct measures of firm‐based imports, and two hybrid measures that use both input and import information. These indirect measures are compared to survey estimates that directly assess import intensity in the production process in an effort to evaluate which indirect method yields more reasonable offshoring measures.  相似文献

Empirical studies commonly use research and development (R&D) to measure innovation and often find, especially in Canada, no strong link between productivity and innovation. In this article, we model innovation as an unobservable latent variable that underlies four indicators: R&D, patents, technology adoption, and skills. We find that these indicators are reasonably good measures of innovation for aggregate manufacturing. However, except for skills, the reliability of the indicators for innovation differs among individual industries. Our innovation indexes, based on the latent variable model, show that most manufacturing industries became more innovative over the 1980–1997 period. The pace of innovation in the electrical and electronic products industry accelerated during the 1990s. In addition, we show that the new measure of innovation has a positive and statistically significant impact on productivity. It takes from 1 to 3 years, depending on the industry, for innovation to generate an impact on productivity.  相似文献

We use an input–output model to examine the effect of trade integration on productivity growth and the demand for skilled workers in Canada for the period 1981–1997. We find that trade integration has a positive effect on both labour productivity and total factor productivity. Labour productivity and total factor productivity grew faster in export and import industries than in the total business sector over this period, and this productivity growth gap has widened over time. Canada is found to have a comparative advantage in capital- and natural-resource-intensive industries, although it has declined over time. We find that trade integration has little effect on the demand for skilled and unskilled workers in Canada.  相似文献

Abstract.  In this paper, we explore the linkages between export‐market participation and productivity performance in Canadian manufacturing plants. We also examine differences in the relationship between exporting and productivity for foreign‐controlled as opposed to domestic‐controlled plants, and between younger and older plants. Export participation is associated with improved productivity. The effect is much stronger for domestic‐controlled plants than for foreign‐controlled plants and for younger businesses than for older businesses. We interpret this as evidence that there is a learning effect associated with export activity but that the potential for improving productivity with entry to export markets differs across firms. Using panel data on 81 Canadian manufacturing industries over the 1983–1996 period, the authors show that the estimated impact of recent tariff cuts was a positive and significant increase in the exit rate of firms. Supplementing this finding with recent research showing, that exiting firms tend to be less productive than those that survive, this provides support for recent trade models asserting that increased exposure to international trade induces the exit of least efficient firms, thereby contributing to productivity growth. Previous studies on the impact of immigration on productivity in developed countries remain inconclusive, and most analyses are abstracted from firms where production actually takes place. This study examines the empirical relationship between immigration and firm-level productivity in Canada. It uses the Canadian Employer-Employee Dynamics Database that tracks firms over time and matches firms with their employees. The study finds that there is a positive association between changes in the share of immigrants in a firm and changes in firm productivity. This positive effect of immigration on firm productivity is small, but it is stronger over a longer period. The effect tends to be larger for low-skilled immigrants as compared with highly-skilled workers, as firm productivity growth is more strongly associated with changes in the share of recent immigrants (relative to established immigrants), and immigrants who intended to work in non-high skilled occupations (relative to immigrants who intended to work in high-skilled occupations). Those differences are more pronounced in technology-intensive and knowledge-based industries. Immigration is found to have little estimated effects on capital intensity in a firm. Finally, this study finds that high skill and lower skill immigrants have similar effects on average worker earnings arising from the positive productivity effect of immigration, but only skilled immigrants are associated with higher firm profits.

Technology and the demand for skills in Canada: an industry-level analysis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In this paper we examine the effect of technological change on the relative demand for skilled workers across Canadian industries. We find that skill upgrading at the aggregate level is less evident in Canada than in the United States and other industrialized economies over the 1981–94 period. Behind this overall trend on skill upgrading, there is substantial variation across industrial sectors. Consistent with the skill-biased technological change hypothesis, the technology indicators – the stock of patents used by the industry and the age of capital stock – are found to be significantly correlated with skill intensity. Ce mémoire examine les effets du changement technologique sur la demande de travailleurs qualifiés dans les industries canadiennes. On montre que l'amélioration du niveau des compétences au niveau agrégé est moins claire au Canada qu'aux Etats-Unis et dans les autres économies industrialisées au cours de la période 1981–94. Derrière cette tendance générale, il y a cependant des variations importantes entre les secteurs industriels. On trouve que les indicateurs de niveau technologique (le stock de brevets, l'âge du stock de capital) sont co-reliés positivement au degré d'intensité d'utilisation des compétences – ce qui s'arrime bien avec l'hypothèse du changement technologique liéà une amélioration du niveau des compétences  相似文献

The paper examines how Canadian manufacturing plants have respondedto reductions in tariff barriers between Canada and the restof world over the past two decades. Three main conclusions emergefrom the analysis. First, trade liberalization was a significantfactor behind the strong export growth of the Canadian manufacturingsector. As trade barriers fell, more Canadian plants enteredthe export market and existing exporters increased their shareof shipments sold abroad. Second, export-market participationwas associated with increases in a plant's productivity growth.Third, our analysis identified the presence of three main mechanismsthrough which export-market participation raises productivitygrowth among plants: learning by exporting; exposure to internationalcompetition; and increases in product specialization that allowedfor exploitation of scale economies. Our evidence also showsthat plants that move into export markets increase investmentsin R&D and training to develop capacities for absorbingforeign technologies and international best practices. Finally,entering export markets leads to increases in the number ofadvanced technologies being used, increases in foreign sourcingfor advanced technologies, and improvements in the informationavailable to firms about advanced technologies. It is also associatedwith improvements in the novelty of the innovations that areintroduced.  相似文献

Aggregate labor and multifactor productivity growth slowed substantially post‐2000 in the Canadian manufacturing sector. To examine the source of the decline, this paper proposes a decomposition method that delves deeper into the two micro‐components of aggregate productivity growth: a within‐plant component and a between‐plant component. The decomposition builds on earlier work by Jorgenson and his collaborators that decomposes aggregate productivity growth into its industry components, but applies it to the plant level and introduces non‐neoclassical features of the plant‐level economic environment. It finds that the preponderance of the aggregate labor and multifactor productivity growth slowdown is due to the pro‐cyclical nature of productivity growth arising from capacity utilization. Almost all of the aggregate productivity growth slowdown is driven by exporters, as exporters experienced large declines in labor productivity growth in the post‐2000 period as a result of large declines in their capacity utilization.  相似文献
