Collective Virtuosity in Organizations: A Study of Peak Performance in an Orchestra

abstract    The purpose of this paper is to build theory on peak performance at the group level. Peak performance transcends ordinary performance and is associated with a subjective experience in which one loses a sense of time and space as well as feels great joy and bliss. We chose to study this phenomenon at the group level through a methodology of participant observation in an orchestra. We found that groups can be transformed by their own performance in a reflexive process in which virtuosity, or individual peak performance, becomes collective. We offer a propositional model of collective virtuosity in organizations, and offer directions for further research.     

Consumer Search in Retail Gasoline Markets

This paper develops direct tests for search behavior in retail gasoline markets. We exploit a unique market‐level dataset that allows us to directly measure search intensity with daily web traffic data from a gasoline price reporting website and perfectly measure daily changes in price levels and dispersion. Our simple yet powerful tests provide strong evidence of both cross‐sectional and intertemporal price search.

Summary It is shown that the most important advantages of fluctuating exchange rates (full employment; protection against the import of inflation; optimal international specialisation) as well as the disadvantages of this system (instability of the economy; inflationary pressure; hampering international economic relations) only have a limited validity. On the other hand the advantages of fixed exchange rates (promoting international trade; impeding internal inflation) and its disadvantages (larger unemployment; import of inflation) have no more general validity. A crawling peg does not give a solution for fundamental disequilibria and a widening of the band implies a more difficult task for the authorities. Fluctuating exchange rates always leave open the possibility of ‘dirty floating’. An adjustable peg with rules for swift adjustment for deficitand surplus countries might well give the best solution.
