Business returns from gold price fixing and bullion trading on the interwar London market

From September 1919, the world price of gold was ‘fixed’ daily in London by a small group of licensed traders. The arrangement was not ideal, as it advantaged the traders concerned, but it was seen by the Bank of England at the time as critical to British economy recovery and to the maintenance of London’s position as a world trading centre. This article examines the available archival evidence on whether direct knowledge of the workings of the mechanism enabled Mocatta and Goldsmid, traders central to the operations of the ‘gold fix’, to earn unusually high profits across the interwar period.

Benchmarks in the spotlight: The impact on exchange traded markets

The Fix for precious metals is a global pricing benchmark that provides pricing and liquidity provision for market participants. We exploit the gradual change in the century old auction process to quantify the efficiencies related to more transparent pricing. Our focus is in the market impact of this change on exchange listed products. We find that reforms to the Fix have reduced quoted and effective bid-ask spreads and improved overall market depth. The results imply a positive spillover effect stemming from timelier and more accurate pricing information. The conditions under which we observe the benefits from transparency are related to product liquidity and the degree of market segmentation.

What You Should Know About Megaprojects and Why: An Overview

This paper takes stock of megaproject management, an emerging and hugely costly field of study, by first answering the question of how large megaprojects are by measuring them in the units of mega, giga, and tera, and concluding with how we are presently entering a new “tera era” of trillion‐dollar projects. Second, total global megaproject spending is assessed, at US$6 to US$9 trillion annually, or 8% of the total global gross domestic product (GDP), which denotes the biggest investment boom in human history. Third, four “sublimes”—political, technological, economic, and aesthetic—are identified and used to explain the increased size and frequency of megaprojects. Fourth, the “iron law of megaprojects” is laid out and documented: Over budget, over time, over and over again. Moreover, the “break–fix model” of megaproject management is introduced as an explanation of the iron law. Fifth, Albert O. Hirschman's theory of the “Hiding Hand” is revisited and critiqued as unfounded and corrupting for megaproject thinking in both the academy and policy. Sixth, it is shown how megaprojects are systematically subject to “survival of the unfittest,” which explains why the worst projects get built rather than the best. Finally, it is argued that the conventional way of managing megaprojects has reached a “tension point,” in which tradition is being challenged and reform is emerging.     

基于“空间修复”理论的跨省旅游通道设计

跨省旅游通道是新时期区域旅游发展的重要举措,川陕金三角旅游协作区是我国跨省旅游通道建设的重要区域。针对该区域的旅游通道设计实践为相关理论研究提供了重要契机。通过跨省旅游区空间修复理论框架的确立,解析了跨省旅游区核心地理要素的空间格局,并规划了"1310"旅游线路走向方案;突破了传统行政区划带来的地理空间阻隔,实现了区域旅游经济的地理扩张与旅游资本的空间重组。研究结论将丰富和深化"旅游线路统筹"的理论研究成果,并可为其他旅游通道设计提供参考。
