A Tentative Discussion of Rhetorical Device of Pun in English Idioms

Idiom, accepted through common practice in the course of the formation of language and the development over a long period of time, is linguistic entity which has specific meaning in the social and cultural life. Pun is a rhetorical device which makes use of words or word phrases having the same sound and form, but with two or more distinct meanings; or words having the same sound, but differing in form and meaning. From homonyms and homophones, this paper studies and probes into the rhetorical device "pun" in English idioms, which is helpful to correctly understand the usage of pun in English idioms and improve our level of appreciation of English idioms.
