Abstract:This article uses industrial employment data at U.S. commuting zone level to test two widely debated propositions about related variety and industrial growth. Our empirical investigations confirm that related variety and specialization have positive interaction effects on industrial employment growth and that the impacts of related variety on industrial growth are much stronger in manufacturing sectors than in nonmanufacturing sectors.
Keywords:Related variety  specialization  industrial structure  agglomeration economies
