A Battle on Chips

6 years ago in 2006, when the semiconductor chip giant Intel sold its poor-performing mobile chip department Xscale, it never thought of returning to this sector. Today, when it decides to duplicate its success into the mobile realm, it found there are few partners for it to cooperate with. Most of the partners go to a small British semiconductor and software design company named ARM Holdings plc (ARM). Using a special business mode, ARM successfully established an industrial system in which ARM shares not only success with partners but risks as well. And such an ecosystem is almost impossiblefor Intel to break. However, Intel has its own faith. The 22-nanometer chips will be its last generation universal chip, to be followed by future SOC (system on chip), which is the mainstream for the mobile market. Besides, its technical advantage is still overwhelming: while the other chip manufacturers have difficulties in 28-nanometer and 20-nanometer processing , Intel is confident in the more advanced 22-nanometer technology, which can greatly reduce chip power consumption and size. The result of this battle remains to be seen.
