A Discussion on Issues of College English Achievement Testing

This paper discusses the issues of college English achievement testing:the contents of some tests are not sufficiently representative of the instructional objectives and are considered to have low validity;reported scores are mainly raw scores,to which there are serious limitations;tests of unequal difficulty have the same pass mark and are not equated,affecting the accuracy of mastery or non-mastery classification decisions.The paper suggests that specifi- cations for items be developed before test writing,raw scores be converted into standardized scores,standard setting be made and tests be equated when a comparison is made between tests of various levels of difficulty.
