The recent pension reform in Germany enacted in 2001 brought a major change in the structure of the pension system. Traditionally the statutory social insurance pension scheme provided income replacement at a level that allowed to maintain the living standard acquired in the course of the working life. On top of and complementary to that voluntary employer-sponsored occupational pension schemes and voluntary individual provision used to supply additional income during retirement.
