Immediacy: A Remark on the Vitalism of Aesthetic Organising

Mostly aesthetics are treated as a quality among others, characterising an object whether it is seen as an essential object-feature or a dimension in the observation and construction of "the object". In this article, we elaborate on a more radical conceptualisation, where aesthetics are seen as desire and force, as an essential feature of expressivity, and as the actual it is born in the motion between language and visibility, between speaking and seeing, but as the substantive, it is always already dissolved by the absolute horizon, that which never actualises, always outside the general, abstract and inaccurate conceptualisation of difference, as difference between the actual and the possible, withhold in the inescapable remnants of virtualitity, its own deferment, as always becoming-other . In this sense, it is an aesthetic which comes into being though the voices of Maurice Blanchot and Gilles Deleuze.

Cournot and Bertrand Competition when Advertising Rotates Demand: The Case of Honda and Scion

We develop a model to explain why firm behavior differs in the market for small cars. Firms such as Honda compete in output (Cournot) and produce marketing campaigns with universal appeal, while firms such as Scion compete in price (Bertrand) and produce targeted marketing campaigns. We show that this mixture of Cournot and Bertrand behavior can occur when advertising rotates demand. When behaving as a Cournot-type firm such as Honda, it is more profitable to pursue a mass-market advertising campaign that rotates demand counterclockwise when it faces relatively low unit costs and a flat demand function. When behaving as a Bertrand-type firm such as Scion, it pays to pursue a niche-market advertising campaign that rotates demand clockwise when it faces relatively high unit costs and a steep demand.     

Whistle-Blowing and Morality

Whistle-blowing is generally considered from the viewpoint of professional morality. Morality rejects the idea of choice and the interests of the professional as immoral. Yet the dreadful retaliations against the messengers of the truth make it necessary for morality to leave a way out of whistle-blowing. This is why it forges rights (sometimes called duties) to trump the duty to the public prescribed by professional codes. This serves to hide the obvious fact that whether to blow the whistle is indeed a choice, not a matter of objective duty. One should also notice that if it fails to achieve anything then blowing the whistle was the wrong decision (or maybe the right decision that nobody would want to make). There is nevertheless a tendency to judge it based on the motivation of the whistle blower. In a way, whistle blowers should strive to act like saints. Yet, it is logically impossible to hold both whistle-blowing as mandatory and whistle-blowers as heroes or saints. Moreover, this tends to value the great deeds of a few over the lives of the many, which is incompatible with the basic assumptions of morality. But consistency is not a main feature of professional morality.

中国的市场经济地位确认已经指日可待,然而,我国目前对出口企业的补贴制度并没有完全符合世贸组织多边贸易规则的要求。虽然市场经济地位确立以后,中国政府在反倾销应诉中将拥有更多的话语权,中国出口产品遭遇反倾销制裁的风险也会有所减弱。但是与此同时,中国出口产品遭受反补贴制裁的可能性会大大增加。尽快完善我国的补贴制度,使之与多边贸易体制相衔接,这是我们目前急迫需要解决的问题。     

The Takeover Battle for Fjord Line

This article applies game theory to a particular takeover battle in 1995. The author concludes that, in order to calculate the maximum price it is worth paying to acquire another company, firms should invest a lot of effort in predicting the effects of the takeover process and outcome on the future moves of their takeover rivals. The case study also illustrates how important it is for firms to check whether a rival's threats are empty or credible: for example, whether it is in the interest of an incumbent to maintain as many products as before after a new firm has entered the market.

This means it must be as well-managed as it is well-meaning." The author is Chairman of St George's Healthcare NHS Trust. Until 1988 she was Head of the Department of Politics at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, where she is now Visiting Professor. She is a non-executive director of Norwich Union and of the HMV Group and her most recent book is Business Ethics at Work , Cambridge University Press, 1995.

Systemic Leadership and the Emergence of Ethical Responsiveness

The author of this paper argues that the responsibility to nurture and encourage a relationally responsive ethical attitude among the members of an organizational system is shared by all who participate in it. In the dynamic environment of a complex adaptive organizational system where it is impossible to anticipate and legislate for every potential circumstantial contingency, creating and sustaining relationships of trust has to be a systemic capacity of the entire organization. Leadership is socially constructed, as the need for it arises within the complex interactions between individuals and groups within organizations, and can therefore not be described as a set of traits or behaviors possessed by only certain individuals who occupy positions of authority. If the sharing of this kind of relational responsiveness to the everyday realities of organizational life is to be properly understood, it is important to consider it in its concrete institutional manifestations. The last section of this paper therefore explores how an organization, in which leadership is understood in relational terms and is shared by all, looks and functions.     

A cross-cultural construct of the ethos of the corporate codes of ethics: Australia, Canada and Sweden

The objective of this paper is to develop and describe a construct of the ethos of the corporate codes of ethics (i.e. an ECCE construct) across three countries, namely Australia, Canada and Sweden. The introduced construct is rather unique as it is based on a cross-cultural sample seldom seen in the literature. While the outcome of statistical analyses indicated a satisfactory factor solution and acceptable estimates of reliability measures, some research limitations have been stressed. They provide a foundation for further research in the field and testing of the ECCE construct in other cultural and corporate settings. We believe that the ECCE construct makes a contribution to theory and practice in the field as it outlines a theoretical construct for the benefit of other researchers. It is also of managerial interest as it provides a grounded framework of areas to be considered in the implementation in organizations of corporate codes of ethics.     

The Control Function in the Hospitality Industry

The suggestion is made that the role of the control function in the hospitality industry is not always as all-encompassing or as efficient as it could and should be. It is further suggested that the control function is not just to be seen as a necessary aspect to counter malfeasance of any business but has an extremely useful planning aid function to fulfil. This article endeavours to outline how controls have developed, examining the role of the control function. In so doing, it seeks to highlight a number of points relating to this role.     

Dissolving the Moral Dilemma of Whistleblowing

The ethical debate on whistleblowing concerns centrally the conflict between the right to political free speech and the duty of loyalty to the organization where one works. This is the moral dilemma of whistleblowing. Political free speech is justified because it is a central part of liberal democracy, whereas loyalty can be motivated as a way of showing consideration for one’s associates. The political philosophy of John Rawls is applied to this dilemma, and it is shown that the requirement of loyalty, in the sense that is needed to create the moral dilemma of whistleblowing, is inconsistent with that theory. In this sense, there is no moral dilemma of whistleblowing. This position has been labelled extreme in that it says that whistleblowing is always morally permitted. In a discussion and rejection of Richard De George’s criteria on permissible whistleblowing, it is pointed out that the mere rejection of loyalty will not lead to an extreme position; harms can still be taken into account. Furthermore, it is argued that the best way is, in this as in most other political circumstances, to weigh harms is provided by the free speech argument from democracy. Lars Lindblom is a Ph D. student in philosophy at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. He has worked as a business ethics consultant and has written on efficency, workplace inspections and business ethics.     

The natural environment as a salient stakeholder: non-anthropocentrism, ecosystem stability and the financial markets

The current debate as to whether the natural environment should be accorded stakeholder status involves an assumption that it is in some way 'different' from other stakeholders, requiring favourable discriminatory treatment. Essentially it is regarded as passive, requiring regulatory agencies to represent its interests or the wider public to demand its protection on the occasion of, for example, oil spills that leave wildlife in a visibly distressed state. But the natural environment does not have 'consciousness' as do traditional classes of stakeholders such as employees, shareholders and contractors, nor does it negotiate in markets over the price at which it sells its output in the way that a trader haggles with potential buyers. This paper proposes that in the context of financial markets the natural environment possesses stakeholder status, founded upon the essentiality of ecosystem stability for their proper functioning and the structuring of instruments traded on them.

British Industry in the 1980's

British industry has had a turbulent decade, and it is hard to assess how far it has come over the 1980's. The BBC's Money Programme wanted to enlighten public debate on the subject, and commissioned London Business School researchers to furnish them with as much data as possible. This article catalogues the data and summarises many arguments of interpretation around it.
