Previous studies of market efficiency have reported conflicting results when examining stock splits. Recent studies reporting market inefficiencies have made several methodological improvements, but have failed to control for the possible confounding effects of “unexpected” changes in corporate earnings announced near the stock split event. Stock splits are often issued around the time that firms experience large increases in corporate earnings. Therefore, an explicit treatment of earnings announcements in an event study of stock splits may yield further insights. This study found no market inefficiencies associated with splitting securities that experienced moderate changes in corporate earnings. However, anomalies were associated with splitting securities that experienced large increases in corporate earnings. These results suggest that previous findings of market inefficiencies, attributable solely to the stock split event, may be due in part to unexpected changes in corporate earnings.  相似文献

Recent studies document abnormal stock returns at stock split announcements. Three hypotheses related to expected future earnings—the trading range, attention, and signaling hypotheses—have been offered as explanations. Evidence has also been provided that splitting firms have greater postannouncement earnings growth than control nonsplitting firms. Using earnings expectation data from the Institutional Brokers Estimate System, significantly greater forecast revisions are found in this study for split firms than for control nonsplit firms. The difference is significantly related to abnormal stock returns of splitting firms.  相似文献

We provide a comprehensive examination of the post‐issue wealth effects of 29 completed tracking stock restructurings. We document that for the parent stock and for the combined firm, tracking stock restructurings lead to insignificant long‐term excess returns. However, we find that shareholders of tracking stocks realize significant post‐issue wealth losses. Unlike spin‐offs and carve‐outs, announcements of tracking stock restructurings are preceded by negative one‐year excess returns, and unlike the positive post‐issue long‐term excess returns to spin‐off stocks and the insignificant long‐term excess returns to carve‐out stocks, tracking stocks experience negative long‐term excess returns.  相似文献

In this paper the interest rate sensitivity of bank stock returns under alternative econometric specifications and the changes in the sensitivity over time are studied. Results indicate that the sensitivity depends on the econometric specification and the period considered. Bank stock returns show a sensitivity to long-term government security returns and innovations, but not to short-term government security returns and innovations except under one specification. Since 1980, banks seem to have reduced their interest rate risk exposure. Finally, while long-term returns are positively associated with stock returns, short-term returns show a positive association only since 1980.  相似文献

Here, the relation between stock price reactions to announced dividend changes and the yields of the underlying securities is examined. A significant positive (negative) relationship is detected between announcement date returns and yield for dividend increases (decreases) even after controlling for the magnitude of the dividend change. Price reactions associated with dividend increases vary directly with the change in yield and, on average, low-yielding companies do not experience abnormal returns when they increase their dividends. Implied in these results is that the information conveyed through dividend changes varies with the yield of the underlying security and the market response is a function of factors beyond the pure information effect.  相似文献

In this article I present a test for detecting abnormal returns when the event analyzed induces volatility and the portfolio is small. The results show that the test is well specified and leads to significant gains in power. I subsequently analyze the abnormal returns around the stock split ex date according to the split factor and find significant abnormal returns only when the factor is greater than 2. The varying motives behind the splits may explain this finding.  相似文献

Numerous empirical studies establish that inflation has a negative short‐run effect on stock returns but few studies report a positive, long‐run Fisher effect for stock returns. Using stock price and goods price data from six industrial countries, we show that long‐run Fisher elasticities of stock prices with respect to goods prices exceed unity and range from 1.04 to 1.65, which tends to support the Fisher effect. We also find that the time path of the response of stock prices to a shock in goods prices exhibits an initial negative response, which turns positive over longer horizons. These results help reconcile previous short‐run and long‐run empirical evidence on stock returns and inflation. Also, they reveal that stock prices have a long memory with respect to inflation shocks, such that investors should expect stocks to be a good inflation hedge over a long holding period. We examine the valuation effects of out-of-the-money calls of convertible securities. In general, out-of-the-money calls generate positive abnormal stock returns. These returns are higher when the call price exceeds the market value of the called securities (positive premium calls), compared with when the market value exceeds the call price (negative premium calls). Furthermore, Value Line Investment Survey net operating income forecasts are significantly higher after call announcements for positive premium calls, while the revision is insignificant for negative premium calls. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that positive premium calls signal positive information.  相似文献

This paper examines the relationship between stock returns and several measures of expected inflation. The proxies include the inflation forecasts extracted from U.S. Treasury bill yields, the mean forecast of surveys conducted by the Institute for Social Research, and the predictions from a rolling time-series model. Unlike recent studies, there does not appear to be a significant negative relationship between stock returns and expected inflation at the beginning of the period. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that stock returns signal changes in expected inflation.  相似文献

In prior research the neglected firm effect persists even after controlling for firm size. Several recent studies show that the size effect is a stock price effect. In the present study we investigate whether excess returns on neglected stocks are a manifestation of a stock price effect. Although material evidence supporting an independent neglected firm effect is still found, results are much weaker than in prior studies. Examining a large sample of New York Stock Exchange and American Stock Exchange stocks from 1977 to 1988, we find that both January and non-January months do not have a statistically significant neglect effect after controlling for a price effect.  相似文献

Several researchers find a negative correlation between the rate of inflation and stock returns. This phenomenon may be explained by the variability hypothesis, which posits that the negative correlation is caused by the combination of a positive relation between the rate of inflation and the variability of inflation and a negative relation between the variability of inflation and stock returns. An autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic model of inflation is used to measure the variability of inflation. Empirical results do not support the ability of the variability hypothesis to explain the negative correlation between stock returns and inflation.  相似文献

We investigate share price reactions to announcements of dividends payable in the common stock of corporations different from the issuing firm. We find that firms that declare these dividends (typically investment companies) experience positive abnormal returns upon announcement. We also find that such dividends are more likely to be declared when the shares to be distributed have peaked in value. Consistent with this finding, we document negative announcement-period abnormal returns for firms having their shares distributed. Additional tests reveal that prices respond more negatively when the information signal is strongest, when outside ownership is more dispersed, and when management is more entrenched.  相似文献

We examine time‐series features of stock returns and volatility, as well as the relation between return and volatility in four of China's stock exchanges. Variance ratio tests reject the hypothesis that stock returns follow a random walk. We find evidence of long memory of returns. Application of GARCH and EGARCH models provides strong evidence of time‐varying volatility and shows volatility is highly persistent and predictable. The results of GARCH‐M do not show any relation between expected returns and expected risk. Daily trading volume used as a proxy for information arrival time has no significant explanatory power for the conditional volatility of daily returns. JEL classification: G15  相似文献

Various techniques and sources of information exist to aid investors in predicting future stock returns. However, no effective proxy for retail investors, such as stock message board users, has been established. This study provides guidelines for creating an effective proxy. The heart of such proxies is sentiment indexes, and in the past the indexes have had low predictive power. Introducing four methodological improvements for applying text classifiers and two probability measurements, we contrast eight widely applied text classifiers to stock message board data. Based on the classifier results and incorporating our new methods, the new sentiment index proves to be a significant “same‐day positive but next‐day negative” directional indicator.  相似文献

This paper derives the relationship between the population unconditional variance of common stock returns and the variance of expected returns conditional on a well-specified information set. As a consequence, a lower bound is obtained for the variance of common stock returns. The sample counterpart of this bound is then empirically tested against the sample variance of returns. The paper's main conclusion can be stated as follows: the observed volatility of real (inflation-adjusted) common stock returns is not “irrationally” large. The paper admits of this conclusion because the point estimate of the lower-bound variance derived in this model is actually larger than the point estimate of common stock return volatility. However, since these point estimates are found to have a statistically insignificant difference, equality of the two variances cannot be ruled out. Hence, “rationality” of common stock returns—as implied by a utility-based valuation conditional on a specified information set—cannot be rejected.  相似文献

Implied Equity Duration: A New Measure of Equity Risk   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Duration is an important and well-established risk characteristic for fixed income securities. We use recent developments in financial statement analysis research to construct a measure of duration for equity securities. We find that the standard empirical predictions and results for fixed income securities extend to equity securities. We show that stock price volatility and stock beta are both positively correlated with equity duration. Moreover, estimates of common shocks to expected equity returns extracted using our measure of equity duration capture a strong common factor in stock returns. Additional analysis shows that the book-to-market ratio provides a crude measure of equity duration and that our more refined measure of equity duration subsumes the Fama and French (1993) book-to-market factor in stock returns. Our research shows how structured financial statement analysis can be used to construct superior measures of equity security risk.  相似文献

We examine funding conditions and U.S. insurance company stock returns. Although constrained funding conditions, signaled by restrictive Federal Reserve monetary policy, correspond with increases in the future payouts of fixed‐income securities held by insurance firms and potentially provide value through the liability side of insurer balance sheets, they also decrease the values of securities currently held in insurer portfolios. Prior research finds that restrictive policy has a negative effect on equity returns in general. Our results suggest the negative impacts of constrained funding environments outweigh the potential positives, as insurance company stock returns are significantly lower during periods of constrained funding. This effect varies within a given funding state and also across insurer type. The effect is strongest during the first 3 months of a constrained funding environment and for life and health insurers—insurer types with longer portfolio durations. For property and liability (P&L) insurers, lower stock return performance only exists in the first 3 months of a constrained funding environment. In the subsequent months, P&L insurers actually have higher stock returns during constrained periods, consistent with their typically shorter duration asset portfolios, which are more quickly rolled over into new higher‐yielding securities.  相似文献

In this paper we show that, similar to NYSE/AMEX stocks, NASDAQ stocks exhibit significant ex date returns for reverse stock splits. Although the 10-day cumulative return after the ex date is close to –10%, this does not violate market efficiency, because the average bid-ask spread for the reverse split stock is at least double this return. We also document that these large negative returns are mostly due to a drop in the ask price while bid prices barely change at all. Furthermore, the ex date returns are negatively related to trading volume. These results suggest that there is abnormal selling and a significant buildup of market makers' inventories near the ex date. To reduce the inventory buildup, market makers lower ask prices to induce buying by investors, resulting in the observed negative returns. Lowering bid prices, an alternative strategy for reducing inventories, is not attractive to market makers due to competitive factors and the reduction of commissions associated with a smaller number of transactions. Notably, selling investors have no incentives to sell their stocks early to avoid the observed negative ex date return, since this return is largely an ask price phenomenon and does not represent realized returns to sellers.  相似文献

We examine the long-run return performance of over 1,600 firms with reverse stock splits. These stocks record statistically significant negative abnormal returns over the three-year period following the month of the reverse split. The sample firms experience poor operating performances over the four years that include and follow the year of the reverse split, which suggests informational inefficiencies. Because these stocks have unique financial characteristics, we also show that they would be very difficult to sell short. Thus, arbitrageurs would be restricted in their ability to earn abnormal profits, even if they correctly anticipated a price decline.  相似文献

In this article we propose a new parsimonious state‐space model in which state variables characterize the stochastic movements of stock returns. Using the equally weighted and decile monthly stock returns, we show that (a) a parsimonious state‐space model characterizes the variation in expected returns at any horizon; (b) the extracted expected returns explain a substantial proportion of the variance in realized returns, and the magnitude of this proportion increases significantly with the horizon of returns; (c) the model successfully captures the empirical fact that returns of smaller firms have both stronger positive autocorrelations of short‐horizon returns and stronger negative autocorrelations of long‐horizon returns; and (d) the forecasts of asset returns obtained with the state‐space model subsume the information in other potential predictor variables such as dividend yields.
