The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993: what does it mean for your organization?

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) requires that employers with 50 or more employees located within a 75-mile radius of a worksite be granted 12 weeks of unpaid leave. This article summarizes the arguments for and against mandated leave, describes the main tenets of FMLA and suggests how employers can implement FMLA leave in a manner favorable to both the employer and the employees.     

Nurse retention: is it worth it?

Nurse turnover costs thousands of dollars and negatively affects patient outcomes. Study results indicate experienced nurses perceive decreased autonomy and task orientation, and increased work pressure in their work environments. Strategies are presented to help retain RNs, save money, and improve patient outcomes.     

Plan-coordination: Who needs it?

In this paper I revisit the question of coordination - of plans by prices and other social institutions. Prices contain ambiguous information that requires interpretation. How are they, in spite of this, able to coordinate plans and actions? The answer given in this paper is that they are not - they do not. I suggest that a closer examination of plan-coordination indicates that some plans should not be coordinated, at least as regards their outcomes. Coordination applies to the ‘rules’, the institutions, and not to the outcomes that occur from following them. This follows from the obvious notion that there must be room for creativity. While this may seem like a trivial point, made many times, it is not clear, at least as concerns the role of prices, that it has been fully digested.
