语言是文化的表现形式之一,语言和社会发展之间必然会产生相互的影响。本文着重探究了存在于英语语言中的性别歧视和民族歧视现象,并分析指出了产生歧视性语言的原因。

语域是语言在不同场景的功能变体，是语场，方式和基调三个变项的综合体现，实现不同的交际目的。在写作过程中，对语篇语场，方式，基调的准确把握是大学英语写作中的一个难点。现试图从海南某大学英语作文的语域分析基础上，了解其恰当传达意义的能力并就英语写作中语域意识的培养提出一些建议。     

中级英语学习者中介语的过去时态错误分析研究

二语习得中的错误分析理论从非英语母语学习者的语言背景和认知阶段出发,为外语学习和教学提供了独特的视角和方法,对解决学习者外语学习中的问题提供了新的对策和路径。本文通过设计任务、分析实例的方式,结合二语习得中错误分析理论,对中级英语学习者中介语的时态错误进行探究,并从实例和分析中得出结论和建议,即二语习得中的转换错误在中级英语学习者的语言实践中仍然存在,而学习者应在混用时态之前分别熟练使用时态。

英语新闻语篇大量使用名词化隐喻已成为该类文本的一个显著特征。为帮助译者在翻译过程中更好地理解英语原文、获得准确流畅的译文,本文分析了名词化结构在新闻语篇中的功能,并针对新闻语篇中大量出现的名词化结构提出相应的翻译策略。     

基于语料库的中美英语社论的模糊限制语使用情况调查

本文通过自建语料库，对比研究了中美英语社论体裁中的模糊限制语的使用情况。结果表明中美英语的模糊限制语存在跨文化的差异性，同时也存在跨体裁的差异性。

Managing in a Nuevo Mundo: Accommodating Linguistic and Cultural Diversity Under Title VII

This article examines a legal issue that is derivative of the increasingly multicultural character of the American work force. The recent case of Garcia v. Spun Steak (1993, 1994) is illustrative of the challenge managers can face in dealing with cultural and linguistic diversity in the workplace. Over time, there have been conflicting messages in employment discrimination law as to the propriety of employer-imposed restrictions on the use of languages other than English in the workplace. However, the basic question involves the balancing of both the employer's right to manage the business and the right to self-expression in the language of one's choice in the workplace. Recommendations are made as to how each party's rights can be balanced under the law. What will be seen is that in the nuevo mundo of work found at the edge of the twenty-first century, the interests of both employers and employees may be best served by policies favoring language promotion over language restrictions.

Building communities and tolerance: power,ownership and social interactions among young people in an English-medium school in Cyprus

Learning and teaching of English language in foreign contexts is usually associated with possible economic gains that it may bring. However, there are other and possibly more immediate implications of such instruction, especially on the way young people interact in schools where English is the medium of instruction. Using Bourdieu’s framework of capitals, the current study aims to explore how English language is perceived and used among young people from Turkish language backgrounds in a private school in the northern part of Cyprus where English is the medium of both instruction and communication. It also investigates whether students’ attitudes towards this language have any impact on the building of communities and tolerance when it comes to cultural diversity in and outside the classroom. Analysis of the data, which was collected through in-class ethnographic observations and informal chats with young people, showed that students who possessed a higher amount of linguistic capital in English were also perceived as popular and academically superior by all of the participants in this particular school. While linguistic abilities in English played a significant part in determining the access rights to certain peer groups, students whose first language was Turkish tended to capitalize on this skill to support each other to achieve academic success. Thus, language appeared to be a dividing factor rather than a bridge, which affected the school’s culture of tolerance negatively.
