Over the last decade, the demand for domestic and international flights in Korea has increased substantially. To meet the strong flight demands, several low cost carriers have begun to offer flight services. In addition, full service carriers have been motivated to establish their own subsidiary low cost carriers to maintain their market share against rival low cost carriers. This paper studies the management strategies of three kinds of airlines - full service carrier, its subsidiary low cost carrier and rival low cost carrier - based on game theory in the competitive air transport market. Each airline is assumed to act as a player and chooses strategies regarding airfare, flight frequency, and the number of operating aircrafts for specific routes while maximizing its own profits. Demand leakages between the airlines are considered in the flight demand function according to the selected strategies of all airlines. Through various game situations reflecting realistic features, this study provides managerial insights that can be applied in the competitive air transport market.  相似文献

The main operational concept of Single European Sky ATM Research Programme is the notion of business trajectory. One possible implementation is based on the notion of a contract of objectives; an agreement among the main air traffic management actors on spatial and temporal intervals called target windows. These 4D windows are defined prior to flight departure by the airlines, airports and air navigation service providers to increase punctuality. We use an analytic hierarchy process to assess the opportunity of implementing this concept by considering the views of experts. India, home to one-sixth of the world's population, is becoming one of the world's economic engines. Its bureaucratic and outdated regulatory policies have been reformed resulting in a three-fold increase in the number of scheduled airlines and a five-fold increase in the number of aircraft operated. This paper reviews how the new regulatory roadmap has transformed the supply of domestic air services. A large passenger survey conducted in Mumbai investigated the sensitivity of passengers to a change in fare and which flight products would encourage them to select either a full service airline or a low cost carrier. The study finds that there is a homogenous set of flight products required by leisure passengers, travelling on both full service and low cost airlines, however there is a considerable dissimilarity overall between the requirements of passengers using a full service airline and a low cost carrier.  相似文献

This study develops a non-additive model for evaluating and improving the service quality of airlines and compares its results with the conventional additive method. Service quality is a composite of various attributes and many in a system have inter-dependent characteristics that may not be correctly evaluated using conventional additive measures. A fuzzy integral is thus proposed. Factor analysis is initially used to extract some independent common-factors and fuzzy integral used to integrate the performance ratings of inter-dependent attributes in each common-factor. For the analytic hierarchy process a pair-wise comparative approach is adopted to determine the relative weights linking each independent common-factor. Finally, Grey relation analysis and simple additive weight method are used to find airline service quality. A study of international airlines is conducted for verification. Safety and reliability emerge as the critical factors of service quality.  相似文献

This article examines the performances of 114 major international airlines between 1987 and 2010 using the resource-based theory. Results show that intangible resource is the most important resource among the human, physical and intangible resources at the aggregate industry level. In addition, successful airlines need to be able to provide an adequate level of service at relatively low cost. Nonetheless, some airlines enjoy higher profits than the others due to the country-specific differences arising from the bilateral open skies agreement between countries, the geographical location of the airline hub etc. There are also evidences suggesting an increasing consumer acceptance of new airlines, which connote that established airlines cannot be complacent. Following the emergence of budget airlines that provide point-to-point service to short distance destinations, full legacy carriers could differentiate themselves by offering direct connections on long-distant flights.  相似文献

Owing to the cut throat competition and economic uncertainty in the market, airlines are focusing on strategic alliances for satisfying customer needs, especially in the current time which is dominated by global integration, demanding customer and fast changing technologies. This strategy is widely adopted by airlines. However, the selection of strategic alliance partner is a very decisive decision, and this selection process engrosses a number of complex processes which is result of compound reflection of associated various factors. In addition, the decision makers may be inconsistent in their views and preferences, arising due to imperfect information or intrinsic conflict between various departments. This paper presents a model based approach of an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) for evaluation of criteria and fuzzy technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (FTOPSIS) for the selection of strategic alliance partner. A case of Indian airline industry demonstrates the application of the proposed approach. Eventually, robustness of the model is demonstrated by sensitivity analysis.  相似文献

Air transport deregulation has lead to an increase of air traffic, together with a reduction of air fares. Air fare reduction has narrowed operational margins of airlines, bringing financial and employment instability. This has brought airlines to pay increasing attention to flying costs reduction. Two important components of flying costs airlines can try to cut modifying the planned flight are en route charges and operational costs. We rely on Demand Data Repository (DDR2) data to calculate deviations from planned flight trajectories to analyse the extent to what airlines try to cut operational costs making shorter flights than planned if possible, and cut en route charges providing a planned flight with lower en route charges than the planned flight. Our findings show that there is no generalised strategy among airlines to reduce en-route charges asking for deviations of the planned route. On the other hand, airlines are achieving savings of operational costs regularly. Higher savings per nautical mile are obtained in night flights, with longer planned distance and operated by low cost carriers.  相似文献

Most previous studies concerning airline performance evaluation focus merely on operational performance. Financial performance, however, which might directly influence the survival of an airline is usually ignored. The absence of financial ratios will directly lead to biased assessment. This paper tries to construct a performance evaluation process for airlines with financial ratios taken into consideration. First, a conceptual framework is redeveloped, based on the one created by Fielding et al. to help form performance indicators involving both transportation and finance aspects. Second, to overcome the problems of small sample size and unknown distribution of samples, the grey relation analysis is used to select the representative indicators and the TOPSIS method is used for the outranking of airlines. Third, the organizational characteristics of an airline are used to divide the total performance into three major departments of an airline: production, marketing, and management. The division of total performance is helpful for operators to recognize the performance of a department of an airline and to identify the responsibility of a department. Finally, a case study is conducted using the example of Taiwan's five major airlines. The empirical result shows that performance evaluation for airlines can be more comprehensive, if financial ratios are considered.  相似文献

从社会经济、运输能力及经济效益、能源消耗、安全可靠性、环境保护等方面建立铁路可持续发展的客观评价指标体系,采用层次分析法与模糊识别理论相结合的多级模糊综合评价方法进行计算,对我国铁路的可持续发展性进行纵向定量评价。纵向评价结果显示,当前我国铁路处于"弱可持续发展"级别,在可持续发展阶段中属于中等偏下状态。其中能源资源消耗状况处于基本可持续发展级别,显示了铁路运输方式的优势;但运输安全状况值得关注,需要增强对运输安全的管理和技术投入。  相似文献

This paper uses a Delphi panel of 26 air transport experts to forecast the structure of air transport in the EU in 2015 in respect of network carriers, low cost airlines and passenger behaviour. Secondary research was used to construct a number of scenarios about the future structure and strategy of EU network and low cost airlines and also traveller behaviour. Consensus of opinions was sought amongst the panel in a two-round process. The consensus opinion of the Delphi experts was that; network carrier consolidation will reduce EU players to less than five, there will be only two or three large low cost carriers, Business Class products will disappear on short hauls, and leisure travellers will take an increasing number of multiple short-duration holidays.  相似文献

The first part of the paper develops a theoretical framework for the analysis of strategic behaviour of European low‐cost airlines that emphasises the role of product differentiation. The second part uses original survey data to assess the effectiveness of low‐cost airlines' distribution strategies. Finally, an econometric model is developed to assess the joint impact of the factors affecting the level of the fares charged by low‐cost airlines. The evidence suggests that, among other things, the highest prices normally are paid for tickets bought between 30 and 8 days before departure, and thus indicates an original pricing strategy that differentiates low‐cost airlines from traditional carriers. We employ Dunning’s eclectic paradigm (OLI) to shed light onto low fare airlines’ internationalization strategies. In addition to 31 European low fare airlines, we also analyze the internationalization strategies of 41 low cost carriers in the Asia–Pacific region. The results indicate that homogenous groups of such airlines emerge with regard to their internationalization strategies and that capital and ownership structure as well as relative timing is especially closely related to low fare airline’s entry modal choice. We discuss inferences for the use of the OLI paradigm in further studies of airline internationalization.  相似文献

For those institutions which finance the aerospace industries, it is useful to estimate what the consequences will be of the present liberalisation process which has beset the European airline industry. Consequently ABN AMRO Bank is in the process of developing a model which analyses those factors which are crucial to the survival of an airline. These so called critical success factors appeared to be: financial strength, cost structure, domestic market, size of operations, internationalisation and political support. When we applied these factors to the European airline industry, we found that only a limited number of airlines stand a fair chance of surviving the anticipated restructuring process as an independent carrier. Several carriers will either have to merge with stronger partners or they face bankruptcy. Based on the critical success factors, the larger northern carriers enjoy the strongest positions. From amongst the southern airlines, those with a large domestic market and strong political support have a chance to survive, provided they will be able to adjust their cost structure in time.  相似文献

There have been various agreements between the US commercial airports and the airlines each of which has defined how the risk, responsibilities, and reward of running an airport should be shared among them. The airport–airline financial relationships at the nation’s commercial airports are based on four basic approaches: the residual cost, the compensatory, the hybrid, privatization approaches. In this paper, the authors provide a comprehensive review of airport–airlines financial agreements, and develop an analytical model to measure the financial performance of the US commercial airports. In general, compensatory airports have had a higher marginal contribution to profitability than residual airports.  相似文献

This paper provides the results of an econometric analysis of the influences of airline characteristics on the average operating costs per aircraft movement. The analysis combines a comprehensive selection of airline-output variables, airline-fleet variables, and airline-market variables. The results confirm the existence of economies of density, economies of load factor, economies of aircraft utilisation and economies of aircraft size. The paper does not provide evidence of economies of scale, economies of stage length or economies of fleet commonality. Furthermore, airlines that additionally operate full freighters, airlines that are members of a worldwide alliance and airlines that operate a multi-hub system face higher average operating costs per aircraft movement. Surprisingly, the regression results demonstrate that airlines that use newer aircraft have higher average operating costs per aircraft movement, suggesting that ownership costs (depreciation and leasing costs) of new aircraft outweigh the increasing maintenance costs of old aircraft. Finally, the results show that airlines that have a dominant position at their hubs or bases have higher operating costs per aircraft movement, implying that the absence of serious competitive pressure enables airlines to charge higher ticket prices and, with that, leads to a limited focus on cost savings.  相似文献

The paper offers a comment on an earlier article by Hazledine that argued a business model adopted by Air Canada and Air New Zealand allows them to compete with low cost airlines. Panel data is used to determine the incidence of airport fees on fares in the Spanish leisure market airlines. We also study its structure through an empirical specification of a pricing and demand equation system. The results show the existence of market power, strategic behavior and density economics. We also demonstrate that airlines pass all the airport fees onto customers by increasing fares. Furthermore, we find that the behavior of airlines in routes with the presence of low cost carriers do not differ from other routes.  相似文献

Many airports around the world have recently built, rebuilt or are in the process of constructing new terminals. Incumbent airlines and new entrants must be allocated to the new and old facilities. When spaces at airport terminals are directly allocated, the allocation should be done by taking into account the implications for airlines’ competition and social welfare, given the airlines’ network configuration. We use a theoretical model in which two airlines compete in prices with differentiated products for a given network structure. The model shows that, in general, if airlines are allocated to different terminals, the level of competition is reduced, the ticket prices are higher and the consumer surplus and social welfare are lower. Only in some routes, and under certain conditions on the market size, ticket prices may be lower.  相似文献

Based on the proposal of the European Commission on including the aviation sector into the European Emission Trading Scheme, a route-based analysis is conducted simulating cost and demand implications for selected airlines. For a scenario of €20/tons CO2, results indicate that the EU-ETS CO2-based cost increases for the airlines are between €9 and €27 per route and therefore, as an individual factor, are not high enough to instigate major route reconfigurations among European airlines.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a bi-level air transport market model which can handle the shape of network, airfare and service frequency as airline’s control variables and passenger’s behavior. We apply the model to the simple duopolistic market and observe how airlines change their network shape. We assume two types of airlines, the incumbent and the entrant, having different operating cost and conduct numerical computation. From the results, we discuss the features of network equilibrium considering difference in operating cost and confirm that inviting low cost carriers contributes to improving social welfare.  相似文献
