Teaching Western Economics to Eastern Economists

This paper describes and intensive four week workshop for Polish professors of economics. The primary goals of the program were to teach current mainstream Western economics and to introduce U.S. teaching methods to Eastern bloc economists. Prior to this program the professional training of these teachers had been solely or predominantly from officially sanctioned socialist economists.

本文认为,当前我国经济理论界论战的关键问题之一,是如何正确对待马克思主义经济学和西方经济学的关系。在我国经济理论界,一些人对西方经济学一窝蜂地盲目推崇,使马克思主义经济学及其在经济学领域的指导地位遇到了严重的挑战。实际上,西方经济学的推崇者陷入了一系列理论误区,因为他们不愿意承认西方社会科学的阶级性、意识形态和价值判断。文章提出,对西方经济学要进行分析、鉴别和批判,邓小平关于正确对待西方学术文化思潮的论述,现在仍然是我们正确解决马克思主义经济学和西方经济学关系的指导原则。

Household Food Waste Solutions for Behavioral Economists and Marketers

ABSTRACT

Household food waste originates in three predictable stages – when shopping, storing, and serving. That is, food can be purchased and never prepared, prepared and never served, or served and never eaten. Building on behavioral economics insights, this framework focuses on why consumers waste food in these three stages and how marketers can help consumers reduce food waste and thereby help them get more value from their products by enjoying them more and wasting them less. For cost-conscious consumers, wasting less means saving more. For profit-conscious marketers, wasting less means making more profit.     

International Visibility of Balkan Economists in the Post-Socialist Era

During the socialist era, economists in the Balkan countries rarely published their work in the West due to political restrictions, methodological differences with the West, and inadequacy in Western languages. After the collapse of socialism, political barriers were lifted, a Western style of education in economics was adopted, and English began to be taught widely as the common language in the academic realm. The aim of this study is to discuss the impact of these policies on the publication performance of economists in the former socialist countries of the Balkans region. The results reveal that the number of international publications increased gradually over the post-socialist period and fast-reforming countries performed better than the slow movers.

Interpreting the Performance of Business Economists During the Great Recession

It is generally believed that the recession of 2007–09 was not foreseen by business economists. Is this perceived view accurate? We explore this issue by examining business economists’ published statements about economic conditions. We compare these qualitative forecasts with the Beige Book. We conclude that both sets of data are similar and that business economists are responsive to information about the economy and adjust their predictions quickly.     

The Trade Policy Jungle: A Survival Guide for Academic Economists

The rules of the trade policy arena differ from those in academia. How can an economic researcher survive, let alone thrive, in what may appear to be a trade policy jungle? The purpose of this paper is not just to offer guidance in this respect but also to think through the factors that determine the supply and demand for timely, relevant, policy‐relevant insights into commercial policy matters. Understanding the latter provides much of the rationale for the former. Advice follows analysis, as it should do. Economic researchers have certain advantages that they can make immediate use of in the jungle and some baggage that they would do well to shed.
