A procedure is given for the construction of a monotone estimator that dominates a given estimator for a class of discrete distributions with monotone likelihood ratio. This procedure is applied to some empirical Bayes estimators. Monte Carlo results are given that demonstrate the usefulness of monotonizing.  相似文献

In this paper we derive the exact risk (under quadratic loss) of pre-test estimators of the prediction vector and of the error variance of a linear regression model with spherically symmetric disturbances. The pre-test in question is one of the validity of a set of exact linear restrictions on the model's coefficient vector. We demonstrate how the known results for the model with normal disturbances can be extended to this broader case. We also show that the critical value of unity results in a minimum of the risk of the pre-test estimator of the error variance. To illustrate the results we assume multivariate Student-t regression disturbances and numerically evaluate the derived expressions.  相似文献

Summary The use of vectors and vector spaces for the representation of the fixed-effects models for the analysis of variance (ANOVA) is well-known. This representation gives a clear understanding of the estimation and hypothesis testing problems.
A similar representation can be used for the random-effects models and some mixed models. As a result the distribution and the expectation of the mean squares in the ANOVA table can easily be derived.  相似文献

We consider the problem of component-wise estimation of ordered scale parameters of two gamma populations, when it is known apriori which population corresponds to each ordered parameter. Under the scale equivariant squared error loss function, smooth estimators that improve upon the best scale equivariant estimators are derived. These smooth estimators are shown to be generalized Bayes with respect to a non-informative prior. Finally, using Monte Carlo simulations, these improved smooth estimators are compared with the best scale equivariant estimators, their non-smooth improvements obtained in Vijayasree, Misra & Singh (1995), and the restricted maximum likelihood estimators. Summary In this paper, using the pivotal quantity method, new shortest-length confidence intervals and uniformly minimum variance unbiased (UMVU) estimators are constructed, where two independent random samples are available from families of distributions involving truncation parameters. This study considers a situation in which agents choose the location of a public facility from a street according to a given mechanism. Agents have single-dipped preferences over a set of feasible locations. We analyze coalitional behavior for any given mechanism for this situation. We identify a necessary and sufficient condition for a mechanism to possess a strong Nash equilibrium by applying the minimax theorem of von Neumann and Morgenstern (1944). We introduce a class of core solutions and show that these solutions are characterized by strong Nash implementability. As a byproduct of these results, we propose a simple mechanism that implements any core solution in strong Nash equilibria.  相似文献

In this paper we consider asmissible and minimax estimation of the parameter in the gamma distribution with truncated parameter space. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for minimaxity (Theorem 1) and obtain the classes of new minimax and asmissible estimators. The results of the paper can be applied to estimation of parameters in the normal, lognormal, Pareto, generalized gamma, generalized Laplace and other distributions.  相似文献

Generalized least squares estimators, with estimated variance-covariance matrices, and maximum likelihood estimators have been proposed in the literature to deal with the problem of estimating autoregressive models with autocorrelated disturbances. In this paper we compare the small sample efficiencies of these estimators with those of some approximate Bayes estimators. The comparison is done with the help of a sampling experiment applied to a model specification. Though these Bayes estimators utilize very weak prior information, they out-perform the sampling theory estimators in every case we consider.  相似文献

For a multilevel model with two levels and only a random intercept, the quality of different estimators of the random intercept is examined. Analytical results are given for the marginal model interpretation where negative estimates of the variance components are allowed for. Except for four or five level-2 units, the Empirical Bayes Estimator (EBE) has a lower average Bayes risk than the Ordinary Least Squares Estimator (OLSE). The EBEs based on restricted maximum likelihood (REML) estimators of the variance components have a lower Bayes risk than the EBEs based on maximum likelihood (ML) estimators. For the hierarchical model interpretation, where estimates of the variance components are restricted being positive, Monte Carlo simulations were done. In this case the EBE has a lower average Bayes risk than the OLSE, also for four or five level-2 units. For large numbers of level-1 (30) or level-2 units (100), the performances of REML-based and ML-based EBEs are comparable. For small numbers of level-1 (10) and level-2 units (25), the REML-based EBEs have a lower Bayes risk than ML-based EBEs only for high intraclass correlations (0.5).  相似文献

This paper describes a Lagrange multiplier interpretation of LUF disturbance estimators and an associated means of constructing residuals and procedures for testing for certain kinds of misspecification. Together with a recent technique for partially ordering multivariate data, the methods are used to devise an F test for nonlinearity in some or all of the explanatory variables in multiple regression. Unlike several alternatives, the proposed test does not require all misspecified variables to be positively correlated. Power computations, and comparisons with other procedures, yield encouraging results.  相似文献

The possible roles of the Durbin Equation and the first observation correction in improving the efficiency of parameter estimates in the lagged dependent variables-serial correlation model are examined. Unconstrained estimation of the Durbin Equation results in an estimate of ρ which is inefficient and its use in feasible generalized least squares does not provide asymptotically efficient estimates. Evidently, the first observation correction is a very important determinant of small sample properties in the present model. Asymptotically inefficient estimators which use a first observation correction frequently outperform Hatanaka's asymptotically efficient estimator in finite samples, essentially because it does not use the first observation.  相似文献

In this paper, we analytically investigate three efficient estimators for cointegrating regression models: Phillips and Hansen’s [Phillips, P.C.B., Hansen, B.E., 1990. Statistical inference in instrumental variables regression with I(1) processes. Review of Economic Studies 57, 99–125] fully modified OLS estimator, Park’s [Park, J.Y., 1992. Canonical cointegrating regressions. Econometrica 60, 119–143] canonical cointegrating regression estimator, and Saikkonen’s [Saikkonen, P., 1991. Asymptotically efficient estimation of cointegration regressions. Econometric Theory 7, 1–21] dynamic OLS estimator. We consider the case where the regression errors are moderately serially correlated and the AR coefficient in the regression errors approaches 1 at a rate slower than 1/T1/T, where TT represents the sample size. We derive the limiting distributions of the efficient estimators under this system and find that they depend on the approaching rate of the AR coefficient. If the rate is slow enough, efficiency is established for the three estimators; however, if the approaching rate is relatively faster, the estimators will have the same limiting distribution as the OLS estimator. For the intermediate case, the second-order bias of the OLS estimator is partially eliminated by the efficient methods. This result explains why, in finite samples, the effect of the efficient methods diminishes as the serial correlation in the regression errors becomes stronger. We also propose to modify the existing efficient estimators in order to eliminate the second-order bias, which possibly remains in the efficient estimators. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate that our modification is effective when the regression errors are moderately serially correlated and the simultaneous correlation is relatively strong.  相似文献

This paper introduces the generalized wordtype pattern of a nonregular fractional factorial design and considers its connection with the distance distribution. Based on the corresponding relationship between a fractional factorial design and a code, we develop a consulting design theory for fractional factorial designs with two groups of factors. It works for regular and nonregular designs and covers the previous results as special cases. As an illustration, it is further applied to the selection of optimal two-level single arrays derived from Hadamard Matrices.  相似文献
