This qualitative (phenomenological) study explored the perceptions of a quality of work-life (QWL) survey from the perspective
of 10 employees from a variety of departments in a Canadian cancer centre. Data were collected through one-on-one interviews
at the workplace. The interviews were conducted several months after the survey had been completed and the findings presented
to staff. The following themes emerged from the analysis: (1) talking about the survey triggered discussions of QWL issues
most of which were not captured in the survey; (2) the impact of the survey was more important than the survey itself; and
(3) participants were concerned that departments or groups of employees were labelled based on the survey results. Implications
for researchers who wish to use surveys and standardized scales in health care settings are discussed. 相似文献

The emergence of new participatory mechanisms, such as participatory budgeting, in towns and cities in recent years has given rise to a conflict between the old protagonists of local participation and the new citizens invited to participate. These mechanisms offer a logic of collective action different from what has been the usual fare in cities — one based on proposal rather than demand. As a result, urban social movements need to transform their own dynamics in order to make room for a new political subject (the citizenry and the non‐organized participant) and to act upon a stage where deliberative dynamics now apply. This article aims to analyse this conflict in three different cities that set up participatory budgeting at different times: Porto Alegre, Cordova and Paris. The associations in the three cities took up a position against the new participatory mechanisms and demanded a bigger role in the political arena. Through a piece of ethnographic research, we shall see that the responses of the agents involved (politicians, associations and citizens) in the three cities share some arguments, although the conflict was resolved differently in each of them. The article concludes with reflections on the consequences this conflict could have for contemporary political theory, especially with respect to the role of associations in the processes of democratization and the setting forth of a new way of doing politics by means of deliberative procedures. 相似文献

This article describes the process for preparing a survey, which will be used to measure relevant variables, which are involved
in a study of training needs in a Spanish sports organisation. The variables which have been considered are: problems and
difficulties in carrying work of specific positions; “strong points” in carrying out this work; usefulness of the training
received in facing and solving the above-mentioned problems and difficulties; usefulness of the training received in acquiring
and strengthening these “strong points” in carrying out work; opinion and suggestions with respect to future training. Due
to the applied nature of the study, a data collection methodology was designed which was based on interviews and group discussions
with a representative sample of workers. Finally, the predictive capacity of perception, which workers have, of their motivation

Despite the evident rise in the number of qualitative studies that are published in leading journals, I argue that the rich tradition and hallmark of qualitative research is under pressure. In recent years qualitative papers are increasingly being fashioned in the image of quantitative research, so much so that papers adopt ‘factor‐analytic’ styles of theorizing that have typically been the preserve of quantitative methods. This is a worrying trend as it leads to certain types of explanations dominating our field and at the expense of other viable forms of explanation. It also narrows the remit of qualitative research in general by channelling the theoretical contribution of qualitative studies in the direction of factor‐analytic propositional or variance models. In this article, I discuss the differences between the distinct types of theoretical explanations that are associated with quantitative and qualitative methods, survey the trend towards a quantitative ‘restyling’ of qualitative research, and elaborate its negative implications for our body of knowledge and for the state of management and organization theory. 相似文献

This article describes multi-method triangulation as a means to enhance the internal validity in a qualitative study on language teachers' practical knowledge. Teachers' practical knowledge is viewed as a multi-dimensional concept, requiring multiple instruments for its exploration. In the triangulation procedure, data collected with three instruments were analysed and related to each other. Three steps of analysis, preceded by a pre-analysis step, were used to combine these data. The triangulation procedure culminated in a fairly comprehensive understanding of teachers' practical knowledge with respect to the teaching of reading comprehension to 16- to 18-year-old students. It was concluded that multi-method triangulation is a worthwhile procedure to enhance the internal validity in qualitative studies on a complex topic such as teachers' practical knowledge. 相似文献

For over 60 years, the statistics group at General Electric (GE) has used statistical methods to successfully address key company issues, both reactively and in recent years more and more proactively and holistically. Much of this work invariably calls for some degree of statistics research, including what we now call statistical engineering. Using administrative data as validating standard, we studied the combined effects of two sources of survey error – nonresponse and recall errors – on distributional and substantive bias in a mail survey of absence because of illness among the employees of a Dutch road building company (response rate 77%). No distributional bias was found in five socio-demographic variables (sex, age, years of service, function, and district), but both nonresponse bias and recall bias occurred in our central dependent variables: frequency and duration of absence because of illness. Nonrespondents were on sick leave more frequently and longer than respondents. Furthermore, the self-reports of absence because of illness of our respondents proved to be rather inaccurate. Underreporting of frequency and duration of sick leave was more common than overreporting. Therefore, both sources of error had a cumulative effect.While nonresponse did not result in biased relationships, recall errors had clearly biasing consequences: seven out of 30 correlation coefficients analyzed were too biased to produce valid outcomes; another six were substantially biased. Multiple regression used for predicting recent absence because of illness among our respondents also led to different outcomes depending on the choice of data source (administration or questionnaire) for our absence variables. 相似文献
