We develop a test for the linear no cointegration null hypothesis in a threshold vector error correction model. We adopt a sup-Wald type test and derive its null asymptotic distribution. A residual-based bootstrap is proposed, and the first-order consistency of the bootstrap is established. A set of Monte Carlo simulations shows that the bootstrap corrects size distortion of asymptotic distribution in finite samples, and that its power against the threshold cointegration alternative is significantly greater than that of conventional cointegration tests. Our method is illustrated with used car price indexes. 相似文献

Standard inference in cointegrating models is fragile because it relies on an assumption of an I(1) model for the common stochastic trends, which may not accurately describe the data’s persistence. This paper considers low-frequency tests about cointegrating vectors under a range of restrictions on the common stochastic trends. We quantify how much power can potentially be gained by exploiting correct restrictions, as well as the magnitude of size distortions if such restrictions are imposed erroneously. A simple test motivated by the analysis in Wright (2000) is developed and shown to be approximately optimal for inference about a single cointegrating vector in the unrestricted stochastic trend model. 相似文献

This paper develops new methods for determining the cointegration rank in a nonstationary fractionally integrated system, extending univariate optimal methods for testing the degree of integration. We propose a simple Wald test based on the singular value decomposition of the unrestricted estimate of the long run multiplier matrix. When the “strength” of the cointegrating relationship is less than 1/2, the test statistic has a standard asymptotic distribution, like Lagrange Multiplier tests exploiting local properties. We consider the behavior of our test under estimation of short run parameters and local alternatives. We compare our procedure with other cointegration tests based on different principles and find that the new method has better properties in a range of situations by using information on the alternative obtained through a preliminary estimate of the cointegration strength. 相似文献

We develop a sequence of tests for specifying the cointegrating rank of, possibly fractional, multiple time series. Memory parameters of observables are treated as unknown, as are those of possible cointegrating errors. The individual test statistics have standard null asymptotics and are related to Hausman specification test statistics: when the memory parameter is common to several series, an estimate of this parameter based on the assumption of no cointegration achieves an efficiency improvement over estimates based on individual series, whereas if the series are cointegrated the former estimate is generally inconsistent. However, a computationally simpler but asymptotically equivalent approach, which avoids explicit computation of the “efficient” estimate, is instead pursued here. Two versions of it are initially proposed, followed by one that robustifies to possible inequality between memory parameters of observables. Throughout, a semiparametric approach is pursued, modelling serial dependence only at frequencies near the origin, with the goal of validity under broad circumstances and computational convenience. The main development is in terms of stationary series, but an extension to non-stationary ones is also described. The algorithm for estimating cointegrating rank entails carrying out such tests based on potentially all subsets of two or more of the series, though outcomes of previous tests may render some or all subsequent ones unnecessary. A Monte Carlo study of finite sample performance is included. 相似文献

In the paper, we propose residual based tests for cointegration in general panels with cross-sectional dependency, endogeneity and various heterogeneities. The residuals are obtained from the usual least squares estimation of the postulated cointegrating relationships from each individual unit, and the nonlinear IV panel unit root testing procedure is applied to the panels of the fitted residuals using as instruments the nonlinear transformations of the adaptively fitted lagged residuals. The t-ratio, based on the nonlinear IV estimator, is then constructed to test for unit root in the fitted residuals for each cross-section. We show that such nonlinear IV t-ratios are asymptotically normal and cross-sectionally independent under the null hypothesis of no cointegration. The average or the minimum of the IVt-ratios can, therefore, be used to test for the null of a fully non-cointegrated panel against the alternative of a mixed panel, i.e., a panel with only some cointegrated units. We also consider the maximum of the IV t-ratios to test for a mixed panel against a fully cointegrated panel. The critical values of the minimum, maximum as well as the average tests are easily obtained from the standard normal distribution function. Our simulation results indicate that the residual based tests for cointegration perform quite well in finite samples. 相似文献

We suggest improved tests for cointegration rank in the vector autoregressive (VAR) model and develop asymptotic distribution theory and local power results. The tests are (quasi-)likelihood ratio tests based on a Gaussian likelihood, but as usual the asymptotic results do not require normally distributed innovations. Our tests differ from existing tests in two respects. First, instead of basing our tests on the conditional (with respect to the initial observations) likelihood, we follow the recent unit root literature and base our tests on the full likelihood as in, e.g., Elliott et al. (1996). Second, our tests incorporate a “sign” restriction which generalizes the one-sided unit root test. We show that the asymptotic local power of the proposed tests dominates that of existing cointegration rank tests. 相似文献

In this paper a nonparametric variance ratio testing approach is proposed for determining the cointegration rank in fractionally integrated systems. The test statistic is easily calculated without prior knowledge of the integration order of the data, the strength of the cointegrating relations, or the cointegration vector(s). The latter property makes it easier to implement than regression-based approaches, especially when examining relationships between several variables with possibly multiple cointegrating vectors. Since the test is nonparametric, it does not require the specification of a particular model and is invariant to short-run dynamics. Nor does it require the choice of any smoothing parameters that change the test statistic without being reflected in the asymptotic distribution. Furthermore, a consistent estimator of the cointegration space can be obtained from the procedure. The asymptotic distribution theory for the proposed test is non-standard but easily tabulated or simulated. Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate excellent finite sample properties, even rivaling those of well-specified parametric tests. The proposed methodology is applied to the term structure of interest rates, where, contrary to both fractional- and integer-based parametric approaches, evidence in favor of the expectations hypothesis is found using the nonparametric approach. 相似文献

This paper proposes a likelihood ratio test for rank deficiency of a submatrix of the cointegrating matrix. Special cases of the test include the one of invalid normalization in systems of cointegrating equations, the feasibility of permanent–transitory decompositions and of subhypotheses related to neutrality and long‐run Granger noncausality. The proposed test has a chi‐squared limit distribution and indicates the validity of the normalization with probability one in the limit, for valid normalizations. The asymptotic properties of several derived estimators of the rank are also discussed. It is found that a testing procedure that starts from the hypothesis of minimal rank is preferable. 相似文献

In this paper we consider a regression model with errors that are martingale differences. This modeling includes the regression of both independent and time series data. The aim is to study the appearance of structural breaks in both the mean and the variance functions, assuming that such breaks may occur simultaneously in both the functions. We develop nonparametric testing procedures that simultaneously test for structural breaks in the conditional mean and the conditional variance. The asymptotic distribution of an adaptive test statistic is established, as well as its asymptotic consistency and efficiency. Simulations illustrate the performance of the adaptive testing procedure. An application to the analysis of financial time series also demonstrates the usefulness of the proposed adaptive test in practice. 相似文献

The paper considers n-dimensional VAR models for variables exhibiting cointegration and common cyclical features. Two specific reduced rank vector error correction models are discussed. In one, named the “strong form” and denoted by SF, the collection of all coefficient matrices of a VECM has rank less than n, in the other, named the “weak form” and denoted by WF, the collection of all coefficient matrices except the matrix of coefficient of error correction terms has rank less than n. The paper explores the theoretical connections between these two forms, suggests asymptotic tests for each form and examines the small sample properties of these tests by Monte Carlo simulations. 相似文献

A neglected aspect of the otherwise fairly well developed Bayesian analysis of cointegration is point estimation of the cointegration space. It is pointed out here that, due to the well known non-identification of the cointegration vectors, the parameter space is not Euclidean and the loss functions underlying the conventional Bayes estimators are therefore questionable. We present a Bayes estimator of the cointegration space which takes the curved geometry of the parameter space into account. This estimate has the interpretation of being the posterior mean cointegration space and is invariant to the order of the time series, a property not shared with many of the Bayes estimators in the cointegration literature. An overall measure of cointegration space uncertainty is also proposed. Australian interest rate data are used for illustration. A small simulation study shows that the new Bayes estimator compares favorably to the maximum likelihood estimator. 相似文献

This paper develops methods of inference for nonparametric and semiparametric parameters defined by conditional moment inequalities and/or equalities. The parameters need not be identified. Confidence sets and tests are introduced. The correct uniform asymptotic size of these procedures is established. The false coverage probabilities and power of the CS’s and tests are established for fixed alternatives and some local alternatives. Finite-sample simulation results are given for a nonparametric conditional quantile model with censoring and a nonparametric conditional treatment effect model. The recommended CS/test uses a Cramér–von-Mises-type test statistic and employs a generalized moment selection critical value. 相似文献

This paper analyzes an approach to correcting spurious regressions involving unit-root nonstationary variables by generalized least squares (GLS) using asymptotic theory. This analysis leads to a new robust estimator and a new test for dynamic regressions. The robust estimator is consistent for structural parameters not just when the regression error is stationary but also when it is unit-root nonstationary under certain conditions. We also develop a Hausman-type test for the null hypothesis of cointegration for dynamic ordinary least squares (OLS) estimation. We demonstrate our estimation and testing methods in three applications: (i) long-run money demand in the U.S., (ii) output convergence among industrial and developing countries, and (iii) purchasing power parity (PPP) for traded and non-traded goods. 相似文献

The paper introduces a novel approach to testing for unit roots in panels, which takes a new contour that is drawn along the line given by the equi-squared-sum instead of the traditional one given by the equi-sample-size. We show in the paper that the distributions of the unit root tests are asymptotically normal along the new contour under both the null and the local-to-unity alternatives. Subsequently, we demonstrate that this startling finding may be exploited constructively to invent tools and methodologies for effective inferences in panel unit root models. Simulations show that our approach works quite well in finite samples. 相似文献

In this paper, a bootstrap algorithm for a reduced rank vector autoregressive (VAR) model which also includes stationary regressors, is analyzed. It is shown that the bootstrap distribution for estimating the rank converges to the distribution derived from the usual asymptotic framework. Because the asymptotic distribution will typically depend on unknown parameters, bootstrap distributions are of considerable interest in this context. The result of an application and some Monte Carlo experiments are also presented. 相似文献

I develop an omnibus specification test for diffusion models based on the infinitesimal operator. The infinitesimal operator based identification of the diffusion process is equivalent to a “martingale hypothesis” for the processes obtained by a transformation of the original diffusion model. My test procedure is then constructed by checking the “martingale hypothesis” via a multivariate generalized spectral derivative based approach that delivers a N(0,1) asymptotical null distribution for the test statistic. The infinitesimal operator of the diffusion process is a closed-form function of drift and diffusion terms. Consequently, my test procedure covers both univariate and multivariate diffusion models in a unified framework and is particularly convenient for the multivariate case. Moreover, different transformed martingale processes contain separate information about the drift and diffusion specifications. This motivates me to propose a separate inferential test procedure to explore the sources of rejection when a parametric form is rejected. Simulation studies show that the proposed tests have reasonable size and excellent power performance. An empirical application of my test procedure using Eurodollar interest rates finds that most popular short-rate models are rejected and the drift misspecification plays an important role in such rejections. 相似文献

We consider the issue of cross-sectional aggregation in nonstationary and heterogeneous panels where each unit cointegrates. We derive asymptotic properties of the aggregate estimate, and necessary and sufficient conditions for cointegration to hold in the aggregate relationship. We then analyze the case when cointegration does not carry through the aggregation process, and we investigate whether the violation of the formal conditions for perfect aggregation can still lead to an aggregate equation that is observationally equivalent to a cointegrated relationship. We derive a measure of the degree of noncointegration of the aggregate relationship and we explore its asymptotic properties. We propose a valid bootstrap approximation of the test. A Monte Carlo exercise evaluates size and power properties of the bootstrap test. 相似文献

The paper examines a Lagrange Multiplier type test for the constancy of the parameter in general models with dependent data without imposing any artificial choice of the possible location of the break. In order to prove the asymptotic behaviour of the test, we extend a strong approximation result for partial sums of a sequence of random variables. We also present a Monte-Carlo experiment to examine the finite sample performance of the test and how it compares with tests which assume some knowledge of the possible location of the break. 相似文献

This paper considers alternative methods of testing cointegration in fractionally integrated processes, using the bootstrap. The investigation focuses on (a) choice of statistic, (b) use of bias correction techniques, and (c) designing the simulation of the null hypothesis. Three residual-based tests are considered, two of the null hypothesis of non-cointegration, the third of the null hypothesis that cointegration exists. The tests are compared in Monte Carlo experiments to throw light on the relative roles of issues (a)–(c) in test performance. 相似文献
