Manufacturing strategy implementation and cost management systems effectiveness

The fit between manufacturing strategy and the use of cost management systems that could effectively support a firm's information needs in strategic and operational decision-making is prerequisite for a firm's ability to attain desired objectives in its value chain. The primary purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the use of just-in-time and electronic data interchange systems, as an important dimension of a firm's manufacturing strategy, and the perceptions of top financial officers about the effectiveness of cost management systems in supporting strategic and operational decision needs. The results for the research hypothesis, which was examined using a sample of 604 manufacturing organizations in the USA, provided some support for the argument that perceptions of effectiveness of a firm's CMS can be a valid indicator of how well is the CMS designed to support strategic and operational decision needs that are necessary for the implementation of a firm's manufacturing strategy.

The challenge of international human resource management: balancing the duality of strategy and practice

Over the last two decades there has been an unprecedented increase in the number of organizations that have internationalized their operations. The international movement of labour that has been concomitant with such expansion of international business has meant that issues associated with the management of human resources across international borders are increasingly important to international human resource managers and academics. The research presented in this paper examines international human resource management (IHRM) pedagogy and practice in Australia. It reports IHRM academicians' and practitioners' understanding of the major issues for teaching and practice in IHRM and elucidates current developments and directions for this field.

中国制造业出口技术结构的测度及影响因素研究

通过建立1998~2008年SITC Rev.3五位编码产品与制造业22个行业的对应关系,构建行业出口技术水平测算指标。并采用系统动态GMM方法实证研究了中国制造业出口技术结构的影响因素。结果表明,内部知识变量在出口结构深化与升级中的作用得到强化;外资企业在中国研发投入与创新意愿不足;FDI对出口技术结构升级的影响存在行业异质性;劳动密集型行业的资本深化对中国出口技术水平具有稳健的提升作用。可见内部动力挖潜和影响因素的行业异质性,决定了不同行业应强化有利于本行业出口技术水平提升的因素,在采取手段提高本行业出口技术水平时,应同时兼顾国家外资与就业政策目标。     

价值工程在智能制造中的应用——以智能手机设计制造为例

随着劳动力成本上升,产业结构转型与产业战略升级成为必然趋势,而自动化装备在提高产品质量与生产效率、节约劳动力成本等方面发挥关键作用,必然会作为产业转型与升级的重要载体,成为产业转型升级固定资产投资过程中的先行投资对象。以制造业为例,其生产从劳动力密集型向资本、技术密集型转变,其产品从低端向高端升级,都有赖于总装自动化生产线、焊装自动化生产线、涂装自动化生产线等自动化装备系统的巨大投资与广泛应用。如何利用价值工程理论使我国传统粗放型生产模式向集约型生产模式转变,使我国装备制造业技术水平不断提升,智能自动化装备向规模化、大型化、高效率、高精度方向发展,是本文研究的重点。本文结合智能手机设计制造中应用价值工程方法为例,分析如何提升设计功能降低制造成本,以此提供相关经验。

Outsourcing HR as a competitive strategy? A literature review and an assessment of implications

HR outsourcing as an organizational strategy has increased substantially over the last decade. However, this trend has attracted little academic attention regarding how outsourcing decisions are made, the manner in which these decisions are implemented, how outsourcing effectiveness is measured, and its impact on organizational performance. In this article, we provide a critical review of the reasons for, the processes involved in, and the perceived effectiveness of HR outsourcing.We investigate the implications of HR outsourcing for the role of the HR function and for the various groups of people affected by this strategy. We argue that organizations should apply both the resource‐based view and institutional theory when making outsourcing decisions. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The Competitiveness of UK Manufacturing: Performance and Prospects

The competitiveness of UK manufacturing and its future prospects are examined in terms of productivity, the performance of high technology industries and the relationship between science and technology. Die main findings are that concentrating on productivity performance can be misleading and attention should also be paid to the structural aspects of competitiveness, especially the relationship between the science base arid industrial technology. On this basis we conclude that if the UK is to realise fully the competitive potential of technological change, differences in these structural aspects of competitiveness need to be addressed.     

The Industrialization of the Southeast Since 1950: Some Causes of Manufacturing Relocation, With Speculation About Its Effects

A bstract . Although wide recognition has been given to the recent industrialization of the Southeast, little attention has been directed toward specific causes and the societal effects of this economic change. A concentration in manufacturing has occurred frequently in low-wage, low-growth industries as a result of labor surpluses and certain external economies in the region and also as a result of deglomerative forces acting in the older established manufacturing areas. It would appear that these compositional changes in the region's economy would lead to societal changes in an urbanistic direction.
