Since the end of the 1970s, there has been an upsurge in writing on the Russian peasantry during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and some of the most recent examples are discussed here. The work is characterized by its richness of new information and an extension of scholarship into new aspects of peasant economy, society and culture of the period. Much of this new work avoids detailed theorizing, presenting itself as a more grounded and complex understanding than provided by earlier, 'ideologically driven' Marxist and neo–populist approaches, while at the same time drawing on concepts introduced by J.C. Scott and others. This essay offers an account of this body of research and explores its implications for an understanding of the period in terms of class analysis and capitalist development.

THE COST OF HANDLING AND STORING GRAIN IN MANITOBA COUNTRY ELEVATORS1,2

This article is based on a study designed to examine the cost structure of the grain elevator industry in Manitoba for the crop years 1961-62, 1962-63 and 1963-64. Major findings are: The most important factor in reducing average cost is the handling to capacity ratio; the average cost of handling and storing grain was approximately 9.5 cents per bushel per year; the average per bushel cost of handling and storing grain decreased by one-half cent when the annex to capacity ratio increased by 10 percent; the average per bushel cost of handling and storing grain decreased by three-tenths of a cent when the utilization of the plant increased by 10 per cent.
LE COÜT DE MANUTENTION ET DE STOCKAGE DES GRAINS DANS LES ÉLÉVATEURS DU MANITOBA – Cet article est basé sur une étude destinée Ga étudier le coût de ľindustrie des élévateurs au Manitoba pour les récoltes 1961–62, 1962–63, 1963–64, Les principales conclusions de ľétude sont les suivantes: le facteur le plus important permettant de réduire le coût est le "ratio" de capacité; le coût moyen de manutention et de stockage des grains est approximativement de 9.5 cents par boisseaux par an; le coût moyen par boisseaux de manutention et de stockage des grains diminue de 0.5 cents quand le ratio de capacité augmente de 10%à le coût moyen par boisseaux de manutention et de stockage diminue de 3/10 cents quand ľutilisation de ľusine augmente de 10%.
