This paper is a response to Ray's (2004) recent proposal that the intellectual property rights (IPR) attached to potentially life saving/life sustaining innovations should become public goods in cases where markets are either unable or unwilling to pay for the creation of the intellectual property. Using a free market approach to innovation based on Western moral philosophy, we suggest that treating intellectually protected life saving/life sustaining innovations as public goods will likely reduce social welfare over the long term.  相似文献

We investigate the effects of exchange rate changes on innovation by a multinational corporation. The firm enjoys a monopoly in the home market but engages in Cournot competition with a domestic firm in the foreign market. Changes in currency values affect the multinational firm’s profits in domestic currency units, and thus influence the optimal level of process innovation as well as output and prices in the two markets. We find that a devaluation of the home currency will lead the home firm to increase its output in both the home and foreign markets, and increase its spending on R&D. We also find that currency devaluation in the home market leads to lower prices in both markets.  相似文献

Literature examines the relationship between innovation and performance and asserts a positive relationship between organizational learning and both performance and innovation. However, few empirical studies analyze these relationships together. This article explores those relationships using SEM with data from 451 Spanish firms. The findings show that both variables — organizational learning and innovation — contribute positively to business performance, and that organizational learning affects innovation. Another finding of this study is that size and age of the firm, industry and environmental turbulence moderate these relations.  相似文献

This article explores the role of innovation in small and medium sized firms, in relation to the firm's success. After a discussion of the relationship between success, innovation and creativity, some possible backgrounds of creativity and innovation are presented. For one part these are of a personal nature, like the entrepreneur's values, attitudes and level of education. For another part they concern institutional aspects of the firm.After the development of a number of hypotheses these are empirically checked with data from a survey among 200 entrepreneurs in six countries. The purpose of this article is to discuss a few aspects of antitrust enforcement that are directly related to small businesses. The first point concerns how the antitrust laws work as an economic "charter of freedom" by protecting our economy from the misuse of market power by dominant firms, or from anticompetitive collusion by groups of firms, or from anticompetitive mergers, all of which can blunt the mainspring of our economic success – competitive markets. Second is an expansion on the first theme which focuses on how antitrust enforcement helps preserve two freedoms that I think small businesses care about very much: the freedom to engage in entrepreneurship, and the freedom to innovate. A final discussion involves a few recent cases recently seen at the Antitrust Division that illustrate the many ways in which antitrust enforcement has helped the small business marketplace.  相似文献

This paper uses a new data set on innovation output to assess the degree to which the level of innovation in manufacturing firms is influenced by firm size and firm age. Indicators of innovation output used are the number of new products introduced as a function of firm sales and the proportion of firm sales obtained from products first introduced in the previous five years. While the evidence is mixed, the results tend to indicate that it is possible to separate the effects of age and size in assessing the level of innovation. Both firm size and firm age tend to be inversely related to innovative output.  相似文献

本文探讨了异质性企业出口、技术创新与生产率的动态关系.在异质性企业垄断竞争模型的分析框架下,我们构建了企业出口、创新与生产率的动态结构模型,并通过参数化函数形式建立了计量模型.基于2005-2007年中国电子通信行业的企业面板数据,本研究采用biprobit、非线性最小二乘估计等模型对企业出口、技术创新与生产率的关系进行实证研究.研究结果表明,企业出口和创新的决策及其联动作用促进企业生产率的提高;企业的生产率、资本存量、劳动力投入和出口市场冲击是影响企业自选择行为的异质性因素;投资决策的回报随着企业生产率的提高而提高,因此生产率高的企业会自选择做出该投资决策以获得更大利润.我们的研究从理论和实证的视角在一个整体性的框架中验证了自选择效应、出口学习效应和生产率动态效应,同时对中国出口、创新和生产率的现状提出相应政策建议.  相似文献

Using survey data on Australian firms this paper investigates the determinants of innovation. Various possible determinants are investigated, including market structure, export status, the use of networks, and training. Regression analysis is conducted separately for manufacturing and non-manufacturing firms and, within each sector, by firm size categories. The results include evidence of persistence in innovative activities and that the use of networks is associated with innovation in some sector-firm size categories. Specifically, small manufacturing firms exhibit a positive association between networking and innovation. In contrast, for non-manufacturing firms this association is present for medium and large sized firms.  相似文献

This article is a response to Patrick Fridenson’s callfor more research into the life cycle of enterprises and especiallyinto business failure. Its subject is the textile group establishedin 1945 by Cyril Lord, which went on to encompass merchanting,manufacturing, retailing, and finance, operating in the UnitedKingdom, the United States, and South Africa. Using unpublishedrecords as well as the financial and trade press, the articleexplains the nature of Lord’s financial, mercantile, andmanufacturing networks, and his rapid growth, based on productinnovation, novel sales techniques, and massive advertising.The article then examines his subsequent insolvency and receivershipin 1968. 本文认为,物流技术创新涉及经营管理和工具、装备、设施等领域,包括运输、储存、装卸、搬运、包装、配送、流通加工、信息等。一种新物流技术能否被社会选择,需求和相对要素价格变化是重要的影响因素。文章提出,物流技术与装备的发展趋势是先进性、信息化、多样性与专业性、标准化与模块化、系统性与可扩展性、智能性与人性化、绿色化与节能化。具体来说,物流技术会与信息技术紧密结合,实现高度自动化;运输技术会朝着高速化、重载化、节能化和更安全的方向演进,如重载列车、超级生态船、超高速飞机等;装卸搬运技术将向更加节省人力、更加智能、更有效率的方向发展,如激光导引自动车、搬运机器人等;仓储技术将向更加节约土地、节约空间、更加高效率的方向发展,如自动化立体仓库、驶入式激光导引高密度储存系统等。  相似文献

Despite an impressive amount of research, the innovation literature may be characterized as fragmented with little cross‐fertilization and synthesis of findings across levels. Based on a review of conceptual and empirical work on innovation, we present a cross‐level theory that aims to clarify terminology in the innovation process and highlight key concepts and themes that have emerged in innovation research across levels of analysis. We model innovation, offer specific research propositions derived from the model, and identify directions for future research both within and across levels of analysis. Overall, this research responds to the need for greater cross‐level theory building on innovation and a more inclusive consideration of various social and contextual influences in the innovation process.
