The growth industry

As health care consumes an increasing share of the economic pie, critics say the nation's competitive position is at risk. But social and moral arguments for health reforms may prove more compelling.     

The nonprofit sector and industry performance

Despite the importance of nonprofit industries in the economy, little analysis has been conducted as to whether the behavior of such industries differs from that of for-profit industries. Extending previous firm-level analyses, we propose a neoclassical theory with an endogenous nonprofit sector. Our analysis implies that nonprofit firms have a competitive advantage over for-profit firms, so that marginal changes in the industry operate through the for-profit sector. As such, marginal industry behavior is identical to that of a for-profit industry and nonprofit regulations may have a limited impact or even no impact on overall industry performance. Our theory has the methodological advantage that standard for-profit analysis applies directly to nonprofit firms, because they can be analyzed as for-profit firms with lower costs. We discuss aspects of the empirical literature that test this theory of nonprofit activity.

股份回购的立法问题

所谓股份回购是指股份公司通过一定的途径收购回自己发行在外的股份的行为。股份回购将直接导致公司流通股的减少，通常被认为是公司减少资本的行为，有违资本充实和资本维持原则；同时，股份回购还会带来一系列问题，它有可能侵害债权人利益，并且为市场操纵和内幕交易提供土壤，破坏市场正常的竞争秩序，因此，许多企业原则上都禁止公司进行股份回购。但是，在一定条件下，为了达到调整资本结构，扭转经营状况，抵制恶意收购，稳定股市行情，保护股东利益，强化内部人控制，便于职工认购股份等目的，股份回购又是被例外允许的。股份回购作为一种有利有弊的公司行为，必须在立法上予以严格规范，将其限制在一定的范围内。     

The dual pricing system in China's industry

Since February 1985, China has permitted producer goods exchange at two different prices: a state-set price, for centrally rationed supplies, and a higher free-market price. The paper describes the origins of this system and its development from 1981 to 1985. The competitiveness of the UK aerospace industry

Porter's five competitive forces model provides an analytical framework for assessing the UK aerospace industry's competitiveness in this article. Various statistical indicators are used to measure competitiveness, based on published data at the industry and firm level, supplemented with information from company interviews. The indicators include productivity, output, firm size, development time-scales, labour hoarding, exports and profitability. The empirical results of this article suggest that, over the period 1980 to 2000, the UK aerospace industry improved its competitiveness compared with the USA and the EU.
