In the last decade many attempts have been made to combine mortality and morbidity statistics in a single, overall health index. In this paper all of these indexes are shown to involve the same general trade-off between quantity and quality of life. All of them allow increases in the quantity of life to offset decreases in average health status. A formally identical trade-off between population size and average happiness has long been debased in utilitarian ethics, with a marked tendency among modern philosophers to decide in favor of average happiness, that is, precisely contrary to recent health-index researchers. Other considerations also suggest that the trade-off implicit in recent health status indexes may not have general support. The paper concludes with a discussion of various ways of proceeding from this point.  相似文献

The paper assesses the market integration between conventional and Islamic stock prices from the long- and short-run perspectives for France, Indonesia, the UK and the US from September 8, 2008 to September 6, 2013 using various econometric approaches. The results show long-run relationships for all countries, except for the UK where there is no cointegration between conventional and Islamic stock prices. These findings suggest that the Islamic finance industry in the considered economies (except the UK) does not seem to be compliant to Islamic law's maxims, which hinders portfolio managers and market participants to benefit from the opportunities of international diversification and hedging effectiveness. From the correlation perspective, there is evidence of weak linkages between the Indonesian market and the developed markets for both conventional and Islamic stock prices, thus suggesting that investors can diversify their portfolios at the international level to minimize risk. However, there is high connection between the developed markets for both conventional and Islamic indexes. In addition, for each economy, the Islamic index is found to be strongly linked with its conventional counterpart. The structural change analysis reveals common break dates for several cross correlations, thus reflecting the similar time-paths of the interactions between markets. The presence of breaks in the inter-market linkages has important implications for international investors as regards portfolio diversification benefits and for financial policy makers regarding contagion risks and market policies.  相似文献

In order to challenge the existing literature that points to the detachment of Bitcoin from the global financial system, we use daily data from August 17, 2011–February 14, 2020 and apply a risk spillover approach based on expectiles. Results show reasonable evidence to imply the existence of downside risk spillover between Bitcoin and four assets (equities, bonds, currencies, and commodities), which seems to be time dependent. Our main findings have implications for participants in both the Bitcoin and traditional financial markets for the sake of asset allocation, and risk management. For policy makers, the findings suggest that Bitcoin should be monitored carefully for the sake of financial stability.  相似文献

This paper discusses how methodological challenges and problems were handled in a study of how state employees' unions responded to, had an impact on and were affected by new public management reforms in Sweden, Norway, Australia and New Zealand. In the study, particular emphasis was put on institutional characteristics of the unions. The paper clarifies the operational measures of this concept (construct validity) and their causal relationship to the actions and outcomes of the reform processes (internal validity). Two other aspects of research design (external validity and reliability) are also discussed. Finally, some more general lessons learned from the study are indicated.  相似文献

De conjunctuurtest is opgezet met het doel op korte termijn inzicht te verkrijgen in de bewegingen van belangrijke economische variabelen. Daartoe worden de ondernemers vragen gesteld d.m.v. een enqueteformulier omtrent grootheden als productie, afzet etc. De conjunctuurtest laat slechts 3 antwoorden toe: de variabele in kwestie is gestegen, gelijk gebleven of gedaald. Bij dit soort analyses bestaat onzekerheid over de vraag hoe een ondernemer het antwoord "geen verandering" zal interpreteren. Dit probleem is als volgt aangepakt. Voor de ondernemers zijn gespecificeerd de "response functions" p(δ) en q(δ). De functie p(δ) geeft aan de kans dat een ondernemer een stijging zal melden indien hij met een numerieke productie verandering 6 wordt geconfronteerd. De functie q(δ) geeft aan de kans dat hij een doling zal melden bij eenzelfde productieverandering δ. Vervolgens zijn voor de waargenomen productie wijzigingen in de chemische Industrie over de periode januari 1955 t / m december 1957 de waarschijnlijkheden van de meldingen "stijging" p(δ) en "daling" q(δ) bepaald. Hierna zijn met behulp van een computer de antwoorden van de ondernemers gesimuleerd. Zie voor deze techniek sectie 4.
Met behulp van de regressie analyse is vervolgens de samenhang onderzocht tussen de conjunctuurtestgegevens en de productiecijfers van traditionele statistiek. Voor de gebruikte specif caties blijkt dat de correlatie coefficienten worden ver-laagd indien de varianties van de "response" functies groter worden.  相似文献

This study evaluates relationship between personality, gender and departments of a random sample of 294 employees working in 5-star hotels in the Antalya Region of Turkey. Evaluation was conducted using Cattell’s 16 PF (Sixteen Personality Factor) questionnaire. T-test assessed the relationship between personality and gender and one-way Anova analysed personality and department relationship. Results indicate that in the relationship between personality and gender there were significant variance for the subscales dominance, rule-consciousness, sensitivity and self-reliance. Sixteen Personality Factor (16 PF) showed significant differences for warmth, reasoning, emotional stability, dominance, social boldness, apprehension and tension subscales, in terms of personality and department relationship.  相似文献

A significant correlation between integrated time series does not necessarily imply a meaningful relation. The relation can also be meaningless, i.e. spurious. Cointegration is sometimes illustrated by the metaphor of ‘a drunk and her dog’. The relation between integrated processes is meaningful, if they are cointegrated. To prevent spurious correlations, integrated series are usually transformed. This implies a loss of information. In case of cointegration, these transformations are no longer necessary. Moreover, it can be shown that cointegration tests are instruments to detect spurious correlations between integrated time series. This paper compares the Dickey–Fuller and the Johansen cointegration test. By means of Monte Carlo simulations, we found that these cointegration tests are a much more accurate alternative for the identification of spurious relations compared to the rather imprecise method of utilizing the R 2-and DW-statistics recommended by some authors. Furthermore, we demonstrate that cointegration techniques are precise methods of distinguishing between spurious and meaningful relations even if the dependency between the processes is very low. Using these tests, the researcher is not in danger of either neglecting a small but meaningful relation or regarding a relation as meaningful which is actually spurious.  相似文献

本研究采用SCL-90调查初二学生家长的心理健康状况及与学生学业成绩的关系,结果发现:安康市初中学生家长心理健康状况与全国成人常模相比,除人际关系外,其他8个因子分和总均分都高于全国常模,其中躯体化、强迫和总均分差异显著,敌对、精神病性、恐怖、偏执差异极其显著;总分超过160分的家长阳性检出率为20.3%,阳性项目数超过43项的家长阳性检出率为31%;初中家长心理问题表现症状排名前5名的是强迫、敌对、人际关系、抑郁和偏执;快慢班学生家长在强迫、人际关系、抑郁、敌对和偏执上存在显著差异,慢班学生家长在此5因子的因子分和总均分全部高于快班学生家长。  相似文献

This paper highlights the interaction between intended human resource (HR) practices as perceived by supervisors and status similarity between supervisors and employees as a key source of variation in employee work engagement among 298 employees reporting to 54 supervisors at a luxury Chinese hotel. Using a multi-level, process-oriented approach to examine the relationship between intended HR practices by supervisors and engagement as perceived by employees, we show (1) that the interaction of supervisor perceptions of HR practices and supervisor–subordinate hukou (place of origin) status similarity is positively related to employee reports of Leader–member exchange (LMX), HR practices and work engagement; (2) that the interaction of supervisor perceptions of HR practices and hukou status similarity influences employee perceptions of HR practices through LMX; and (3) that the interaction of supervisor perceptions of HR practices and hukou status similarity influences work engagement through employee perceptions of LMX and HR practices. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.  相似文献

This paper explores the interrelation between health and work decisions of older workers. For this, two issues are of relevance. Firstly, health and work may be endogenously related because of direct causal effects of health on work and vice versa, and because of unobservables that may affect both observed health and work outcomes. Secondly, social surveys usually contain self‐assessed health measures and research indicates that these may be subject to endogenous, state‐dependent reporting bias. A solution to the ‘Health and Retirement Nexus’ therefore requires an integrated model for work decisions, health production and health reporting mechanisms.
