The digital transformation of the healthcare branch is important and unstoppable. The enormous possibility of digitalisation to redesign and enhance processes has been shown in other branches. Digital technologies offer the similarly large potential to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare services. However, in terms of digitalisation, the German health system lags behind other European countries. But given a lack of available evidence, the effects of the digitalisation of the healthcare system cannot be reliably evaluated. Digital access to patient data necessitates constructive error cultures in organisations in order to limit defensive medicine. And digital access to health information necessitates individual competence in searching and using this information for participatory decision-making. As with all technological progress, information security is very important in order to gain citizens’ confidence in a digital healthcare system. Thus, it is necessary to simultaneously pursue both enhanced privacy standards and state-of-the-art medical technology.

The European Union is approaching a point where it has to decide between two options: deepening political integration or reducing it. Economists tend to be sceptical. Many would prefer to reduce the scale of integration while returning more competences to member states. The debate, though, lacks a plausible vision for the path forward. Every stable currency union needs some kind of transfer mechanism. Once this notion is accepted, the installation of a “real” European Parliament with the power to raise taxes, particularly on capital income, should be considered.

Education is considered as a key factor for the future development of an economy. Therefore, a well-designed education system is indispensable for a society to maintain or increase its welfare. The regulation of the education system is one of the main tools to which a government has recourse in order to infl uence the system. By using the regulation index created by the Cologne Institute for Economic Research (Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft (IW) K?ln), it is possible to quantify this regulation and to identify positive or negative trends. The authors show that a higher extent of regulation usually correlates with negative economic performance. In terms of education, the results indicate that a higher extent of regulation has a negative impact on the labour market, threatening sustainable long-term development of the economy.

In Germany, the employer’s association is interested in abolishing the legal maximum of working hours per day. The unions want to improve work life balance through a temporary working time reduction combined with a partial wage adjustment. Analysis shows that the current requests are not so urgent. In both cases, one party opposes the requests of the other. A process of give and take is necessary from both employees and employers. We suggest an extension of working time with flexible arrangements and in combination with more home office possibilities. If one party requires other working time arrangements, this should be compensated by wage equivalents.
