Building on research about the nature of public service motivation (PSM) and its application outside the public sector, the authors provide a qualitative-based examination of PSM’s relevance to voluntary sector employees. In doing so, they explore how far their motivations extend beyond those encompassed within current conceptualizations of PSM and whether PSM research can be enriched through the adoption of qualitative methodologies. The findings suggest that PSM accounts for some, but not all, of the motives of voluntary sector employees and indicate that public sector managers involved in outsourcing public services need to be sensitive to their distinctive features. 相似文献

Abstract Contemporary non-profit strategic management/marketing literature suggests that non-profit organizations, including charities, adopt positioning strategies to differentiate themselves in increasingly competitive operating environments. However, the extant literature lacks adequate theoretical/conceptual frameworks and empirical studies to guide research and inform charity management practice. As part of an on-going study in strategic positioning in British charitable organizations, this article presents the key findings of an exploratory survey into the extent of positioning activities in a sample of general welfare and social care charities within the wider voluntary sector in the UK. The empirical findings reveal that charitable organizations undertake positioning activities extensively in their organizations. However, these activities appear to be more complex than those advocated in contemporary non-profit management/marketing literature. The article highlights five emerging themes that could have major implications for research and practice of strategic positioning in charities in specific, and in voluntary-sector organizations in general. 相似文献

Service learning is gaining growing attention in the academic community worldwide largely due to the benefits related to distinctive service learning outcomes. Among the many valuable student-level outcomes, intention for future civic engagement through philanthropic behaviour is one of the most commonly investigated. This study provides an in-depth analysis of students' participation in service-learning programs and their future philanthropic behaviour in the form of volunteerism. A qualitative content analysis is conducted on the sample of students participating in an university's institutionalized service learning program of a transition country to explore its outcomes in this distinctive context. The findings identify four essential elements in assessing service learning participation, including three previously recognized ones and one emerging from the distinctive transition economy context. The findings are of particular importance for shaping the future civic engagement of students through philanthropic activities. 相似文献

In the current political and economic climate, there are rapidly escalating demands from public funders and other stakeholders for indicators which can capture the achievements and impacts of the voluntary sector. Having clarified the context of these demands, the primary aim of this article is to develop criteria for measuring the ‘performance’ of voluntary organizations. This is undertaken by marrying relevant international theoretical literature suggestive of their roles and contributions with a ‘production of welfare’ approach, which has a proven track record in the evaluation of human services. Eight domains of performance are suggested (economy, effectiveness, efficiency; choice/pluralism; equity; participation; innovation and advocacy), embracing twenty-two separate indicator sets. 相似文献

This study examines the potential effects of variable set expansion and data variations upon the efficiency scores generated using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model. It was found that variable set expansion (either through disaggregation of existing variables or addition of new factors) should produce an upward trend in efficiency scores. In addition, ample opportunity exists for ‘decision-making units’ to increase their efficiency scores through manipulation of reported data. In real-world applications of DEA, these problems must be resolved as much as possible (e.g. increased audit of data) in order to improve DEA's practical usefulness and reliability. 相似文献

A current challenge for non-profit organizations (NPOs) is attracting and retaining a new generation of younger philanthropic donors. As such, this exploratory focus group study examined how donor-perceived barriers and motivators may inform NPOs' understanding of strategically approaching and motivating Generation Z (Gen Z; born 1996–2012) donations. More specifically, the findings revealed that the participants (1) experienced pseudoinefficacy as they felt their small donations would not make a difference. In addition, they felt (2) a general lack of trust toward NPOs regarding financial stewardship. Finally, (3) they wanted organizations to develop data-driven narratives to share how funds were used to help the community. As such, the analysis and recommendations are rooted in Narrative Theory. Narrative strategies present a potential avenue for generating persuasion and fostering positive relationships between NPOs and emerging Gen Z donors. 相似文献
