Since the pioneering work of Embrechts and co-authors in 1999, copula models have enjoyed steadily increasing popularity in finance. Whereas copulas are well studied in the bivariate case, the higher-dimensional case still offers several open issues and it is far from clear how to construct copulas which sufficiently capture the characteristics of financial returns. For this reason, elliptical copulas (i.e. Gaussian and Student-t copula) still dominate both empirical and practical applications. On the other hand, several attractive construction schemes have appeared in the recent literature promising flexible but still manageable dependence models. The aim of this work is to empirically investigate whether these models are really capable of outperforming its benchmark, i.e. the Student-t copula and, in addition, to compare the fit of these different copula classes among themselves.  相似文献

This paper tests affine, quadratic and Black-type Gaussian models on Euro area triple A Government bond yields for maturities up to 30 years. Quadratic Gaussian models beat affine Gaussian models both in-sample and out-of-sample. A Black-type model best fits the shortest maturities and the extremely low yields since 2013, but worst fits the longest maturities. Even for quadratic models we can infer the latent factors from some yields observed without errors, which makes quasi-maximum likelihood (QML) estimation feasible. New specifications of quadratic models fit the longest maturities better than does the ‘classic’ specification of Ahn et al. [2002. ‘Quadratic Term Structure Models: Theory and Evidence.’ The Review of Financial Studies 15 (1): 243–288], but the opposite is true for the shortest maturities. These new specifications are more suitable to QML estimation. Overall quadratic models seem preferable to affine Gaussian models, because of superior empirical performance, and to Black-type models, because of superior tractability. This paper also proposes the vertical method of lines (MOL) to solve numerically partial differential equations (PDEs) for pricing bonds under multiple non-independent stochastic factors. ‘Splitting’ the PDE drastically reduces computations. Vertical MOL can be considerably faster and more accurate than finite difference methods.  相似文献

Empirical market microstructure literature widely employs the non-linear and non-Gaussian multiplicative error class of models (MEMs) in modelling the dynamics of trading duration and financial marks. It routinely maintains the weak exogeneity of duration vis-à-vis marks in estimations. However, microstructure theory states that trade duration, volume and transaction prices are simultaneously determined. We propose Lagrange-multiplier (LM) tests for weak exogeneity for the MEMs. Our LM tests are extensions of the weak exogeneity tests applicable to VAR or VECM models with Gaussian distributions. Empirical assessments show that (i) weak exogeneity is widely rejected by the data in the MEMs and (ii) the failure of weak exogeneity seriously biases parameter estimates. We hope our tests will be of interest in future empirical applications.  相似文献

In this note we extend the Gaussian estimation of two factor CKLS and CIR models recently considered in Nowman, K. B. (2001, Gaussian estimation and forecasting of multi-factor term structure models with an application to Japan and the United Kingdom, Asia Pacif. Financ. Markets 8, 23–34) to include feedback effects in the conditional mean as was originally formulated in general continuous time models by Bergstrom, A. R. (1966, Non-recursive models as discrete approximations to systems of stochastic differential equations, Econometrica 34, 173–182) with constant volatility. We use the exact discrete model of Bergstrom, A. R. (1966, Non-recursive models as discrete approximations to systems of stochastic differential equations, Econometrica 34, 173–182) to estimate the parameters which was first used by Brennan, M. J. and Schwartz, E. S. (1979, A continuous time approach to the pricing of bonds, J. Bank. Financ. 3, 133–155) to estimate their two factor interest model but incorporating the assumption of Nowman, K. B. (1997, Gaussian estimation of single-factor continuous time models of the term structure of interest rates, J. Financ. 52, 1695–1706; 2001, Gaussian estimation and forecasting of multi-factor term structure models with an application to Japan and the United Kingdom, Asia Pacif. Financ. Markets 8, 23–34). An application to monthly Japanese Euro currency rates indicates some evidence of feedback from the 1-year rate to the 1-month rate in both the CKLS and CIR models. We also find a low level-volatility effect supporting Nowman, K. B. (2001, Gaussian estimation and forecasting of multi-factor term structure models with an application to Japan and the United Kingdom, Asia Pacif. Financ. Markets 8, 23–34).  相似文献

Conventional time series analysis, focusing exclusively on a time series at a given scale, lacks the ability to explain the nature of the data-generating process. A process equation that successfully explains daily price changes, for example, is unable to characterize the nature of hourly price changes. On the other hand, statistical properties of monthly price changes are often not fully covered by a model based on daily price changes. In this paper, we simultaneously model regimes of volatilities at multiple time scales through wavelet-domain hidden Markov models. We establish an important stylized property of volatility across different time scales. We call this property asymmetric vertical dependence. It is asymmetric in the sense that a low volatility state (regime) at a long time horizon is most likely followed by low volatility states at shorter time horizons. On the other hand, a high volatility state at long time horizons does not necessarily imply a high volatility state at shorter time horizons. Our analysis provides evidence that volatility is a mixture of high and low volatility regimes, resulting in a distribution that is non-Gaussian. This result has important implications regarding the scaling behavior of volatility, and, consequently, the calculation of risk at different time scales.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The precise measurement of the association between asset returns is important for financial investors and risk managers. In this paper, we focus on a recent class of association models: Dynamic Conditional Score (DCS) copula models. Our contributions are the following: (i) We compare the statistical performance of several DCS copulas for several portfolios. We study the Clayton, rotated Clayton, Frank, Gaussian, Gumbel, rotated Gumbel, Plackett and Student's t copulas. We find that the DCS model with the Student's t copula is the most parsimonious model. (ii) We demonstrate that the copula score function discounts extreme observations. (iii) We jointly estimate the marginal distributions and the copula, by using the Maximum Likelihood method. We use DCS models for mean, volatility and association of asset returns. (iv) We estimate robust DCS copula models, for which the probability of a zero return observation is not necessarily zero. (v) We compare different patterns of association in different regions of the distribution for different DCS copulas, by using density contour plots and Monte Carlo (MC) experiments. (vi) We undertake a portfolio performance study with the estimation and backtesting of MC Value-at-Risk for the DCS model with the Student's t copula.  相似文献

In this paper we extend Hasanhodzic and Lo (2007) by assessing the out‐of‐sample performance of various non‐linear and conditional hedge fund replication models. We find that going beyond the linear case does not necessarily enhance the replication power. On the other hand, we find that selecting factors on the basis on an economic analysis allows for a substantial improvement in out‐of‐sample replication quality, whatever the underlying form of the factor model. Overall, we confirm the findings in Hasanhodzic and Lo (2007) that the performance of the replicating strategies is systematically inferior to that of the actual hedge funds.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to describe the appropriate mathematical framework for the study of the duality principle in option pricing. We consider models where prices evolve as general exponential semimartingales and provide a complete characterization of the dual process under the dual measure. Particular cases of these models are the ones driven by Brownian motions and by Lévy processes, which have been considered in several papers. Generally speaking, the duality principle states that the calculation of the price of a call option for a model with price process S=e H (with respect to the measure P) is equivalent to the calculation of the price of a put option for a suitable dual model S′=e H (with respect to the dual measure P′). More sophisticated duality results are derived for a broad spectrum of exotic options. Values of tranche spreads of collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) are driven by the joint default performance of the assets in the collateral pool. The dependence between the entities in the portfolio mainly depends on current economic conditions. Therefore, a correlation implied from tranches can be seen as a measure of the general situation of the credit market. We analyse the European market of standardized CDOs using tranches of the iTraxx index in the periods before and during the global financial crisis. We investigate the evolution of the correlations using different copula models: the standard Gaussian, the NIG, the double-t, and the Gumbel copula model. After calibration of these models, one obtains a time varying vector of parameters. We analyse the dynamic pattern of these coefficients. That enables us to forecast future parameters and consequently calculate Value-at-Risk measures for iTraxx Europe tranches.  相似文献

Identifying unambiguously the presence of a bubble in an asset price remains an unsolved problem in standard econometric and financial economic approaches. A large part of the problem is that the fundamental value of an asset is, in general, not directly observable and it is poorly constrained to calculate. Further, it is not possible to distinguish between an exponentially growing fundamental price and an exponentially growing bubble price. In this paper, we present a series of new models based on the Johansen–Ledoit–Sornette (JLS) model, which is a flexible tool to detect bubbles and predict changes of regime in financial markets. Our new models identify the fundamental value of an asset price and a crash nonlinearity from a bubble calibration. In addition to forecasting the time of the end of a bubble, the new models can also estimate the fundamental value and the crash nonlinearity, meaning that identifying the presence of a bubble is enabled by these models. In addition, the crash nonlinearity obtained in the new models presents a new approach to possibly identify the dynamics of a crash after a bubble. We test the models using data from three historical bubbles ending in crashes from different markets. They are the Hong Kong Hang Seng index 1997 crash, the S&P 500 index 1987 crash (Black Monday) and the Shanghai Composite index 2009 crash. All results suggest that the new models perform very well in describing bubbles, forecasting their ending times and estimating fundamental value and the crash nonlinearity. The performance of the new models is tested under both the Gaussian residual assumption and non-Gaussian residual assumption. Under the Gaussian residual assumption, nested hypotheses with the Wilks' statistics are used and the p-values suggest that models with more parameters are necessary. Under the non-Gaussian residual assumption, we use a bootstrap method to obtain type I and II errors of the hypotheses. All tests confirm that the generalized JLS models provide useful improvements over the standard JLS model.  相似文献

We present an approach for modelling dependencies in exponential Lévy market models with arbitrary margins originated from time changed Brownian motions. Using weak subordination of Buchmann et al. [Bernoulli, 2017], we face a new layer of dependencies, superior to traditional approaches based on pathwise subordination, since weakly subordinated processes are not required to have independent components considering multivariate stochastic time changes. We apply a subordinator being able to incorporate any joint or idiosyncratic information arrivals. We emphasize multivariate variance gamma and normal inverse Gaussian processes and state explicit formulae for the Lévy characteristics. Using maximum likelihood, we estimate multivariate variance gamma models on various market data and show that these models are highly preferable to traditional approaches. Consistent values of basket-options under given marginal pricing models are achieved using the Esscher transform, generating a non-flat implied correlation surface.  相似文献

In this paper, a Sparre Andersen risk process with arbitrary interclaim time distribution is considered. We analyze various ruin-related quantities in relation to the expected present value of total operating costs until ruin, which was first proposed by Cai et al. [(2009a). On the expectation of total discounted operating costs up to default and its applications. Advances in Applied Probability 41(2), 495–522] in the piecewise-deterministic compound Poisson risk model. The analysis in this paper is applicable to a wide range of quantities including (i) the insurer's expected total discounted utility until ruin; and (ii) the expected discounted aggregate claim amounts until ruin. On one hand, when claims belong to the class of combinations of exponentials, explicit results are obtained using the ruin theoretic approach of conditioning on the first drop via discounted densities (e.g. Willmot [(2007). On the discounted penalty function in the renewal risk model with general interclaim times. Insurance: Mathematics and Economics 41(1), 17–31]). On the other hand, without any distributional assumption on the claims, we also show that the expected present value of total operating costs until ruin can be expressed in terms of some potential measures, which are common tools in the literature of Lévy processes (e.g. Kyprianou [(2014). Fluctuations of L'evy processes with applications: introductory lectures, 2nd ed. Berlin Heidelberg: Springer-Verlag]). These potential measures are identified in terms of the discounted distributions of ascending and descending ladder heights. We shall demonstrate how the formulas resulting from the two seemingly different methods can be reconciled. The cases of (i) stationary renewal risk model and (ii) surplus-dependent premium are briefly discussed as well. Some interesting invariance properties in the former model are shown to hold true, extending a well-known ruin probability result in the literature. Numerical illustrations concerning the expected total discounted utility until ruin are also provided.  相似文献

This paper gives examples of explicit arbitrage-free term structure models with Lévy jumps via the state price density approach. In this paper, we incorporate the Bühlmann credibility into three mortality models (the Lee–Carter model, the Cairns–Blake–Dowd model, and a linear relational model) to improve their forecasting performances, as measured by the MAPE (mean absolute percentage error), using mortality data for the UK. The results show that the MAPE reduction ratios for the three mortality models with the Bühlmann credibility are all significant. More importantly, the MAPEs under the three mortality models with the Bühlmann credibility are very close to each other for each age and forecast year. Thus, by incorporating the Bühlmann credibility we are able to converge the forecasting MAPEs resulting from the three different mortality models to a lower and more consistent level. Moreover, we provide a credibility interpretation with an individual time trend for age x and a group time trend for all ages. Finally, we apply the forecasted mortality rates both with and without the Bühlmann credibility to the net single premiums of life insurance products, and compare the corresponding MAPEs.  相似文献

This paper describes the evolution of the daily Euro overnight interest rate (EONIA) by using several models containing the jump component, such as a single-regime ARCH-Poisson–Gaussian process, with either a piecewise function or an autoregressive conditional specification (ARJI) for the jump intensity, and a two-regime-switching process with jumps and time-varying transition probabilities. To model the jump intensity, we include the following effects which are significant for the occurrence of jumps: (1) the end of maintenance period effect because of reserve requirements, (2) the end of month effect, also known as the calendar day effect, caused mainly by accounting adjustments and finally, (3) the meeting effect caused by the meetings of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB). These effects lead to better performance and several of them are also included for the behavior of the transition probabilities. Since the target of the ECB is to maintain the EONIA rate close to the policy rate, we model the conditional mean of the overnight rate series as a reversion process to this policy rate, distinguishing two alternative speeds of reversion, specifically, a different speed if EONIA is higher or lower than the policy rate. We also study the jumps of the EONIA rate around the ECB's meetings by using the ex-post probabilities of the ARJI model. Finally, we develop a volatility forecasting analysis to measure the performance of the different candidate models.  相似文献

Utilising a comprehensive data set for Australian firms, we examine a range of competing asset‐pricing models, including the four‐ and five‐factor models where the equity‐risk premium is augmented by size, value, momentum and liquidity premia, and find that none of the models tested appears to adequately explain the cross section of Australian returns. A model accounting for Australia's integration with the US equity market appears to be the best of the competing models we study. Our argument that a model recognising Australia's integration with the USA is supported when we apply the portfolio and factor construction methodology suggested by Brailsford et al. We propose a dividend stock valuation model where multiple dividend growth series and their dependencies are modelled using a multivariate Markov chain. Our model advances existing Markov chain stock models. First, we determine assumptions that guarantee the finiteness of the price and risk as well as the fulfilment of transversality conditions. Then, we compute the first- and second-order price-dividend ratios by solving corresponding linear systems of equations and show that a different price-dividend ratio is attached to each combination of states of the dividend growth process of each stock. Subsequently, we provide a formula for the computation of the variances and covariances between stocks in a portfolio. Finally, we apply the theoretical model to the dividend series of three US stocks and perform comparisons with existing models. The results could also be applied for actuarial purposes as a general stochastic investment model and for calculating the initial endowment to fund a portfolio of dependent perpetuities.  相似文献

We develop new tests of the dividend signaling hypothesis by focusing on the role of liquidity. We allow for two different types of signaling models: one where current dividends signal firm value and the objective is to prevent current dilution, and the other where commitments to future dividends constitute the signal. We find that the results differ by the sign of the dividend surprise. Signaling models of the commitment type explain the market reaction to negative dividend surprises. Interestingly, this result is significant only for the earlier sub-period in our sample due, perhaps, to the well-documented increase in institutional investors with longer horizons. The market reaction to positive dividend surprises, on the other hand, is shown to be consistent with the over-investment and wealth transfer hypotheses. We show that the failure of the signaling model for these firms could be due to lower costs of dividend increases.  相似文献

We consider minimizing the probability of falling below a target growth rate of the wealth process up to a time horizon T in an incomplete market model under partial information and then study the asymptotic behavior of the minimizing probability as T → ∞. This problem is closely related to an ergodic risk-sensitive stochastic control problem under partial information in the risk-averse case. Indeed, in our main theorem we relate the former problem to the latter as its dual. As a result we obtain an explicit expression for the limit value of the former problem in the case of linear Gaussian models.  相似文献
