STATE OF LOGISTICS: A VISIONARY PERSPECTIVE

Mentzer and Kahn (1994) advocated that the Journal of Business Logistics (JBL) needed to mature. As a follow‐up to that study, the authors analyzed the Journal from the second half of 1993 through the first issue of 2005. Though the study results suggest that more rigorous research has been conducted over the last decade in the field of logistics, did it improve the Journal? Are the standards and criteria put forth in Mentzer and Kahn (1994) the standards and criteria toward which JBL should strive? To address these questions, qualitative interviews were conducted with visionaries in the field of logistics to: (1) investigate the standards and criteria that should be used to gauge the maturity of JBL and (2) determine the future direction of JBL and the discipline.     

THE ROLE OF LOGISTICS IN MARKET ORIENTATION

In today's increasingly competitive environment, survival depends on two key aspects of being market‐oriented ‐ understanding the external environment and executing decisions based on that understanding. Logistics personnel are uniquely positioned to play a key role in creating and maintaining a market‐oriented organization as they are progressively gaining more responsibilities in integrating cross‐functional processes and implementing supply chain strategies. This paper explores how logisticians participate in market orientation behaviors and how a market‐oriented logistics function impacts logistics and business performance. Based on a qualitative field research study involving in‐depth interviews with seventeen logistics personnel that draws and builds upon the logistics, market orientation, knowledge management, organizational behavior, information processing, and strategic management literatures, a theoretical model of logistics market orientation and its effect on logistics and business performance is developed and propositions are presented. Findings highlight logistics' central role in generating, disseminating, reaching a shared interpretation of, and responding to market intelligence.

THE ROLE OF LOGISTICS IN NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

For many firms, a program of successful new product development (NPD) projects is critical to overall company strategy. However, the role of logistics in NPD has rarely been researched. The purpose of this paper is to empirically test the relationship between logistics involvement in new product development and improvements in NPD project performance and NPD logistics performance. Senior logistics managers in manufacturing firms in the United States were surveyed to test these relationships. The analysis demonstrated NPD project performance and NPD logistics performance improved with the involvement of logistics in NPD.

THE ROLE OF LOGISTICS MANAGERS IN THE CROSS‐FUNCTIONAL IMPLEMENTATION OF SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

There is confusion about the domain of supply chain management, and the functions and processes that should be included. In this paper, we describe the key supply chain management processes, the role of logistics managers in each of these processes, and what the logistics function gains from this involvement.     

LOGISTICS STRATEGY — REVISITED

A study of logistics managers examined the roles of three logistics strategies (process, market, and information) in achieving logistics effectiveness. The results examined the dynamics of these three logistics strategies in managing trade‐offs among efficiency, internal and external organizational interactions, and meeting channel member needs. Insights for logistics practitioners, instructors, and researchers are discussed.     

THE USE OF SOCIAL NETWORK ANALYSIS IN LOGISTICS RESEARCH

This paper introduces and provides an overview of social network theory and social network analysis (SNA) and its potential applications to logistics and supply chain management research. It then provides an example of the use of SNA via the introduction of hypotheses related to informal and formal structure and influence within a social network. These hypotheses are tested within the context of the development and implementation of a complex reporting system that evolved as the result of warehousing safety and environmental concerns within an organization.     

EFFECTS OF ORGANIZATIONAL LEARNING IN THIRD‐PARTY LOGISTICS

Logistics service providers operate in an intense competitive environment that requires continuous improvement in logistics service quality and firm performance. Key organizational resources may contribute toward the improvement in performance of logistics service providers. This paper investigates the effect of organizational learning within logistics service providers on client relationship orientation, logistics service quality and firm performance. The study proposes and examines an original concept in logistics research that contributes to theory in the area, provides the opportunity for further research and addresses how organizational resources can contribute to performance in logistics.

本文重点分析自提店式物流取贳模式,即客户在网上下单后,卖家将客户所选商品送到指定的自提店,客户在方便时自行提取的物流配送模式,认为自提店可以由电子商务企业、第三方物流公司或专业的第四方构建,包括固定点式自提店和便利店式自提店两种形式,并对其选择理由和构建对策进行分析。     

‘NOT AN INSTRUMENT OF PUNISHMENT’: PRISON DIET IN THE MID-NINETEENTH CENTURY

This paper examines some of the issues involved in devising a suitable dietary for nineteenth century prisoners. It begins with a section defining and explaining the application of the ‘less-eligibility’ principle—a principle which still strikes a chord with many people today. The paper goes on to describe the lack of standardized diet in the early part of the century, which first led the prison inspectors to investigate the properties of food. The inspectors, however, were administrators, not nutritionists, and the next section is concerned with the work of such medical men as Dr Guy and Dr Smith, who made more scientific experiments and observations in the 1850s and 1860s. In the final paragraphs, prison diet is compared with the sort of food consumed by working class families of the Victorian period. Both at the beginning and at the end of the paper, an attempt is made to demonstrate that the problem of reconciling humane treatment for the prisoner, with society's demands for justice, is just as great for the prison administrator of today as it was in the previous century.

CUSTOMER LOYALTY IN LOGISTICS OUTSOURCING RELATIONSHIPS: AN EXAMINATION OF THE MODERATING EFFECTS OF CONFLICT FREQUENCY

This research examines the moderating effect of conflict frequency on the satisfaction‐loyalty linkage in logistics outsourcing relationships. The findings suggest service satisfaction to be the primary driver of loyalty in smoothly running relationships. However, relational satisfaction takes a leading role in high conflict relationships. As turbulence increases in these important logistics service relationships, the quality of the interaction becomes a critical consideration.

THE ADOPTION OF FORM POSTPONEMENT STRATEGY IN A GLOBAL LOGISTICS SYSTEM: THE CASE OF TAIWANESE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY

The concept of postponement is becoming more and more important as firms put more emphasis on customization along with attempting to control inventory risks and logistics costs. Types of form postponement are examined along with factors affecting the adoption of different form postponement strategies. Data from information technology (IT) firms in Taiwan, one of the largest IT product manufacturers in the world, are utilized in the research.

驾着轻型飞机在蓝天中漫游,与鸟儿齐飞,听白云低语,那是怎样的感受?在大多数人还憧憬着能拥有一部蓝色宝马或者能开着红色敞篷车去野外兜风的今天,有些人已超前"飞跃",驾驶私人飞机正成为最领先、最时髦的休闲娱乐,考"飞机本儿"也成了财富人物的最新时尚。到目前为止,中国已有约50人获得飞机驾照。他们其中有的学"蜜蜂"轻型飞机,也有的学滑翔机、热气球,而拥有严格意义上的私人驾照,即真正能开直升飞机的仅有6人。这与美国持有飞机驾照人数100多万还相去甚远,但市场已显示其潜力。     

ALIGNING LOGISTICS PERFORMANCE MEASURES TO THE INFORMATION NEEDS OF THE FIRM

Performance measurement is critically important to business success. Collecting and responding to information that does not advise management about success in meeting established goals is counterproductive and potentially injurious to the success of the firm. This research develops a framework that allows individual firms to assess their unique measurement needs in light of their stated goals, and to select performance measures most suited to addressing those measurement needs.     

A SUMMARY AND ANALYSIS OF MULTI‐ITEM SCALES USED IN LOGISTICS RESEARCH

Academic disciplines are strengthened through many years of theoretical research leading to significant knowledge advancements in the field. One primary technique for measuring concepts important for theory development is the use of multi‐item scales. This research documents the multi‐item scales utilized throughout the history of leading logistics journals. The test results for validity and reliability with respect to each scale are disclosed. Results indicate a need for logistics researchers to continue developing new measures and refining existing measures by employing rigorous methods to establish scales having highly acceptable psychometric properties.     

REVERSE LOGISTICS: THE IMPACT OF TIMING AND RESOURCES

Although reverse logistics has become a competitive necessity in many industries, there is a lack of agreement as to when formal reverse logistics programs should be introduced. The current research examines the issue of program introduction timing (first, early, late) in the context of the automobile aftermarket industry. The findings indicate that firms developing formal reverse logistics programs early in their industries – but not first – may be best positioned; however, there is also evidence that the timing/performance relationship can be influenced by resource commitment.
