Organizing the purchasing department for innovation

Innovation is by far one of the most important competitive priorities in the current business context. Companies increasingly rely on their supply base to support their innovation potential. As a consequence, the purchasing department might dramatically affect the firm??s innovation capability. This paper aims to investigate??using a multiple case study approach??how the organizational design of the purchasing department could determine a firm??s capability to foster and manage innovation. Seven highly innovative companies were visited and the structures of their purchasing departments were analyzed. Three different configurations for the purchasing department were identified and described.

Accounting for technological innovation: an overview

Technology and, more specifically, significant technological innovation is increasingly being recognized by business executives as both an integral part of business strategy and either a major opportunity for, or strong threat to, their firm's development. A growing number of executives are giving equal attention to both process and product forms of technological innovation, and are scanning technological innovations in the international arena.This paper argues that R&D is an important but not exhaustive component of technological innovation. Its main conclusions from the viewpoint of accounting standards and practice are: - Net cash flow rather than net profit (or loss) is the most relevant financial criterion with which to judge the commercial value and results of innovation. - Both accounting practice and standards should be developed with the clear attempt to ensure international compatabilily. - Given the speed of change in technological innovation, accounting practices and standards should be regularly reviewed, and if necessary altered—two-yearly review seems a justifiable suggestion. - Several standards on accounting for the major fields of technology may need to be developed; however, a broad standard dealing with common issues may be possible. - The input of technologists, researchers and general managers is necessary to ensure that accounting practices and standards are conceptually sound and useful to business managers.     

Financial globalization and technological innovation: International evidence

Country’s technology progress and innovation development not only depends on internal knowledge stock and human capital, but also external financial resources. This paper explores the effect of financial globalization on technological innovation through empirical investigations by using the system generalized method of moment method and panel data from 110 countries over the period of 1985–2015. Our empirical results suggest that financial globalization exerts a significant enhancing effect on technological innovation and this effect becomes stronger for countries with better institution quality. A one unit change of financial globalization can bring about a 0.6 % increase in patent applications. The comprehensive evidence shows that financial development, not trade integration, is the main channel through which financial globalization promotes national innovation. Subsample analysis shows that financial globalization only promotes innovation development of Non- Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. Our findings offer new insights into the influence of financial openness on technology progress.     

Education for technological innovation at the Thayer school

The Thayer School believes that technological creativity must be a part of graduate engineering education. To implement that belief, in July 1978 INVENTE, an engineering design center, was founded with the following goals: (1) To provide for the student an opportunity to learn engineering by its practice; (2) To involve Industry and its engineers and managers in the teaching process as a source of real engineering problems, for guidance and evaluation of the teaching process and its teachers, and as a source of funds for the support of the School, its students and faculty; (3) To become a facility whereby faculty and student projects based on inventions, developments and entrepreneurial enterprises may be aided to meet the needs for financing, development, marketing, manufacturing, patent search and prosecution, legal guidance, etc., through connections with Industry and other Professional Schools inside or outside Dartmouth.This paper discusses the first two years of INVENTE's experience, the philosophy underlying its goals and the barriers yet to be overcome in achieving them.     

Analysis of technological innovation based on citation information

The paper discusses the dynamic properties of the patent network. Technological innovation occurs frequently, and predicting where it will happen is difficult because an economic system can adapt to changing technology. We construct a patent network based on the cited relations between patents and analyze the properties of the patent network from January 1976 to December 2005 by using USPTO patent data. We find that technology trends, which are calculated by our measures, are similar with historical trends of technology, showing that our measures would be useful to predict future technology relations. Also, we find that the change of similarity between patents shows meaningful results in terms of technological innovation.

A remark on economic response to technological innovation

In this article differential techniques are applied to a two-sector equilibrium model of economic response to technological innovation. These techniques allow a parametric comparative statics interpretation of the model, and qualitative results on the directions of parameter shifts are obtained.

How to implement innovation policies through projects successfully

This paper investigates the types of policy instruments responsible for the success of policy implementation through projects. Based on evidence from 12 comparative multiple case-studies, the paper provides an analytical insight from real practice on how and why different types of instruments lead to either successful or unsuccessful projects. In particular, the key finding is that in order for projects to implement policy successfully, policy instruments have to be designed based on specific systems thinking constructs related to flexibility. The findings provide the crucial but missing holistic conceptual direction for the development of implementation theory, which needs to overcome conceptual fragmentation and polarization. The findings also provide the insight as to how instruments really function which is essential to policy makers and project managers involved in public innovation programs.     

Organizing for modern technology and innovation: A review and synthesis

Classical and modern organization designs are reviewed and evaluated in terms of their capabilities for handling radical or major innovations. The choice of an effective organization design is shown to be related to the nature of the technological and market environments. Only Type IV organization designs, the modern-integrative organization designs, are shown to have the necessary qualities for handling all the phases in the life cycle of a major innovation. Though difficult- to implement and maintain, Type IV organization designs are shown to be a potent tool for those modern managers who fully understand how to use them.     

A Canadian university experience in technological innovation and entrepreneurship

The roles of the university, and especially schools of engineering, in serving as sources of new ideas and as training grounds for young persons who may become technical entrepreneurs are set forth. Weaknesses in traditional curricula for engineers as regards innovation and entrepreneurship are identified. The development of the Centre de Développement Technologique at Ecole Polytechnique, University of Montreal is described. The Quebec Industrial Innovation Center, organized in affiliation with Ecole Polytechnique and the Centre de Développement Technologique, is described in detail including several examples of recent projects undertaken.

基于公理设计的工艺创新方法研究

工艺创新对于提高制造业的市场竞争能力具有重要作用。文章提出了基于公理设计和TRIZ理论的工艺创新方法,通过公理设计的独立公理来识别工艺设计中的耦合问题,并提出引入新参数时所带来的有害参数的识别方法及其解决策略。应用TRIZ理论对耦合设计进行解耦,以得到满足需求的工艺方案。通过电饭煲的实例研究验证了该工艺创新方法的有效性。
