This study proposes a new scheme for static hedging of European path‐independent derivatives under stochastic volatility models. First, we show that pricing European path‐independent derivatives under stochastic volatility models is transformed to pricing those under one‐factor local volatility models. Next, applying an efficient static replication method for one‐dimensional price processes developed by Takahashi and Yamazaki (2008), we present a static hedging scheme for European path‐independent derivatives. Finally, a numerical example comparing our method with a dynamic hedging method under Heston's (1993) stochastic volatility model is used to demonstrate that our hedging scheme is effective in practice. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study develops and estimates a stochastic volatility model of commodity prices that nests many of the previous models in the literature. The model is an affine three‐factor model with one state variable driving the volatility and is maximal among all such models that are also identifiable. The model leads to quasi‐analytical formulas for futures and options prices. It allows for time‐varying correlation structures between the spot price and convenience yield, the spot price and its volatility, and the volatility and convenience yield. It allows for expected mean‐reversion in the short term and for an increasing expected long‐term price, and for time‐varying risk premia. Furthermore, the model allows for the situation in which options' prices depend on risk not fully spanned by futures prices. These properties are desirable and empirically important for modeling many commodities, especially crude oil. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Jrl Fut Mark 30:101–133, 2010  相似文献

This study examined whether the inclusion of an appropriate stochastic volatility that captures key distributional and volatility facets of stock index futures is sufficient to explain implied volatility smiles for options on these markets. I considered two variants of stochastic volatility models related to Heston (1993). These models are differentiated by alternative normal or nonnormal processes driving log‐price increments. For four stock index futures markets examined, models including a negatively correlated stochastic volatility process with nonnormal price innovations performed best within the total sample period and for subperiods. Using these optimal stochastic volatility models, I determined the prices of European options. When comparing simulated and actual options prices for these markets, I found substantial differences. This suggests that the inclusion of a stochastic volatility process consistent with the objective process alone is insufficient to explain the existence of smiles. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Using a volatility spillover model, we find evidence of significant spillovers from crude oil prices to corn cash and futures prices, and that these spillover effects are time‐varying. Results reveal that corn markets have become much more connected to crude oil markets after the introduction of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Furthermore, when the ethanol–gasoline consumption ratio exceeds a critical level, crude oil prices transmit positive volatility spillovers into corn prices and movements in corn prices are more energy‐driven. Based on this strong volatility link between crude oil and corn prices, a new cross‐hedging strategy for managing corn price risk using oil futures is examined and its performance is studied. Results show that this cross‐hedging strategy provides only slightly better hedging performance compared with traditional hedging in corn futures markets alone. The implication is that hedging corn price risk in corn futures markets alone can still provide relatively satisfactory performance in the biofuel era. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We examine the evidence of mean and volatility spillovers between stock and foreign exchange markets in Brazil with multivariate GARCH models and nonlinear Granger causality tests. We also use a multivariate GARCH-in-mean model to assess the relationship between risk and return in these markets. The results indicate that the stock market leads the foreign exchange market in price formation and that nonlinear Granger causalities from the exchange market to the stock market do occur. Part of these nonlinear causalities are explained by volatility spillovers. We show that exchange rate volatility affects not only stock market volatility but also stock returns.  相似文献

We study the binomial version of the illiquid market model introduced by Çetin, Jarrow, and Protter for continuous time and develop efficient numerical methods for its analysis. In particular, we characterize the liquidity premium that results from the model. In Çetin, Jarrow, and Protter, the arbitrage free price of a European option traded in this illiquid market is equal to the classical value. However, the corresponding hedge does not exist and the price is obtained only in L2 ‐approximating sense. Çetin, Soner, and Touzi investigated the super‐replication problem using the same supply curve model but under some restrictions on the trading strategies. They showed that the super‐replicating cost differs from the Black–Scholes value of the claim, thus proving the existence of liquidity premium. In this paper, we study the super‐replication problem in discrete time but with no assumptions on the portfolio process. We recover the same liquidity premium as in the continuous‐time limit. This is an independent justification of the restrictions introduced in Çetin, Soner, and Touzi. Moreover, we also propose an algorithm to calculate the option’s price for a binomial market.  相似文献

We study the Merton portfolio optimization problem in the presence of stochastic volatility using asymptotic approximations when the volatility process is characterized by its timescales of fluctuation. This approach is tractable because it treats the incomplete markets problem as a perturbation around the complete market constant volatility problem for the value function, which is well understood. When volatility is fast mean‐reverting, this is a singular perturbation problem for a nonlinear Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman partial differential equation, while when volatility is slowly varying, it is a regular perturbation. These analyses can be combined for multifactor multiscale stochastic volatility models. The asymptotics shares remarkable similarities with the linear option pricing problem, which follows from some new properties of the Merton risk tolerance function. We give examples in the family of mixture of power utilities and also use our asymptotic analysis to suggest a “practical” strategy that does not require tracking the fast‐moving volatility. In this paper, we present formal derivations of asymptotic approximations, and we provide a convergence proof in the case of power utility and single‐factor stochastic volatility. We assess our approximation in a particular case where there is an explicit solution.  相似文献

Empirical evidence suggests that fixed‐income markets exhibit unspanned stochastic volatility (USV), that is, that one cannot fully hedge volatility risk solely using a portfolio of bonds. While Collin‐Dufresne and Goldstein (2002, Journal of Finance, 57, 1685–1730) showed that no two‐factor Cox–Ingersoll–Ross (CIR) model can exhibit USV, it has been unknown to date whether CIR models with more than two factors can exhibit USV or not. We formally review USV and relate it to bond market incompleteness. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a multifactor CIR model to exhibit USV. We then construct a class of three‐factor CIR models that exhibit USV. This answers in the affirmative the above previously open question. We also show that multifactor CIR models with diagonal drift matrix cannot exhibit USV.  相似文献

We investigate the properties of the realized volatility in Chinese stock markets by employing the high‐frequency data of Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index and four individual stocks from Shanghai Stock Exchange and Shenzhen Stock Exchange, and find that the volatility exhibits the properties of long‐term memory, structural breaks, asymmetry, and day‐of‐the‐week effect. In addition, the structural breaks only partially explain the long memory. To capture these properties simultaneously, we derive an adaptive asymmetry heterogeneous autoregressive model with day‐of‐the‐week effect and fractionally integrated generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity errors (HAR‐D‐FIGARCH) and use it to conduct a forecast of realized volatility. Compared with other heterogeneous autoregressive realized volatility models, the proposed model improves the in‐sample fit significantly. The proposed model is the best model for the day‐ahead realized volatility forecasts among the six models based on various loss functions by utilizing the superior predictive ability test.  相似文献

This paper develops a novel class of hybrid credit‐equity models with state‐dependent jumps, local‐stochastic volatility, and default intensity based on time changes of Markov processes with killing. We model the defaultable stock price process as a time‐changed Markov diffusion process with state‐dependent local volatility and killing rate (default intensity). When the time change is a Lévy subordinator, the stock price process exhibits jumps with state‐dependent Lévy measure. When the time change is a time integral of an activity rate process, the stock price process has local‐stochastic volatility and default intensity. When the time change process is a Lévy subordinator in turn time changed with a time integral of an activity rate process, the stock price process has state‐dependent jumps, local‐stochastic volatility, and default intensity. We develop two analytical approaches to the pricing of credit and equity derivatives in this class of models. The two approaches are based on the Laplace transform inversion and the spectral expansion approach, respectively. If the resolvent (the Laplace transform of the transition semigroup) of the Markov process and the Laplace transform of the time change are both available in closed form, the expectation operator of the time‐changed process is expressed in closed form as a single integral in the complex plane. If the payoff is square integrable, the complex integral is further reduced to a spectral expansion. To illustrate our general framework, we time change the jump‐to‐default extended constant elasticity of variance model of Carr and Linetsky (2006) and obtain a rich class of analytically tractable models with jumps, local‐stochastic volatility, and default intensity. These models can be used to jointly price equity and credit derivatives.  相似文献

We explore the determinants of intraday volatility in interest‐rate and foreign‐exchange markets, focusing on the importance and interaction of three types of information in predicting intraday volatility: (a) knowledge of recent past volatilities (i.e., ARCH or Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity effects); (b) prior knowledge of when major scheduled macroeconomic announcements, such as the employment report or Producer Price Index, will be released; and (c) knowledge of seasonality patterns. We find that all three information sets have significant incremental predictive power, but macroeconomic announcements are the most important determinants of periods of very high intraday volatility (particularly in the interest‐rate markets). We show that because the three information sets are not independent, it is necessary to simultaneously consider all three to accurately measure intraday volatility patterns. For instance, we find that most of the previously documented time‐of‐day and day‐of‐the‐week volatility patterns in these markets are due to the tendency for macroeconomic announcements to occur on particular days and at particular times. Indeed, the familiar U‐shape completely disappears in the foreign‐exchange market. We also find that estimates of ARCH effects are considerably altered when we account for announcement effects and return periodicity; specifically, estimates of volatility persistence are sharply reduced. Separately, our results show that high volatility persists longer after shocks due to unscheduled announcements than after equivalent shocks due to scheduled announcements, indicating that market participants digest information much more quickly if they are prepared to receive it. However, contrary to results from equity markets, we find no evidence of a meaningful difference in volatility persistence after positive or negative price shocks. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In an incomplete market, introduction of options could affect the underlying stocks' market behavior. We further examine the various impacts of the advent of equity options, using a recent sample of equity options in Japan. We find that option listings in Japan lead to significant increases in price and volatility, relative to a control sample matched by probability of listing, despite that equity options were launched after the index options in Japan. We discuss the apparent differences in the price and volatility effects across the markets, and conclude that differences in regulatory environments might be responsible.  相似文献

This paper studies the problem of option replication in general stochastic volatility markets with transaction costs, using a new specification for the volatility adjustment in Leland's algorithm. We prove several limit theorems for the normalized replication error of Leland's strategy, as well as that of the strategy suggested by Lépinette. The asymptotic results obtained not only generalize the existing results, but also enable us to fix the underhedging property pointed out by Kabanov and Safarian. We also discuss possible methods to improve the convergence rate and to reduce the option price inclusive of transaction costs.  相似文献

We consider a class of asset pricing models, where the risk‐neutral joint process of log‐price and its stochastic variance is an affine process in the sense of Duffie, Filipovic, and Schachermayer. First we obtain conditions for the price process to be conservative and a martingale. Then we present some results on the long‐term behavior of the model, including an expression for the invariant distribution of the stochastic variance process. We study moment explosions of the price process, and provide explicit expressions for the time at which a moment of given order becomes infinite. We discuss applications of these results, in particular to the asymptotics of the implied volatility smile, and conclude with some calculations for the Heston model, a model of Bates and the Barndorff‐Nielsen–Shephard model.  相似文献

We study a two‐period general equilibrium model with incomplete asset markets and default. We make collateral endogenous by allowing each seller of assets to fix the level of collateral. Sellers are required to provide collateral whose first‐period value, per unit of asset, exceeds the asset price by an arbitrarily small amount. Moreover, borrowers are also required to be fully covered by the purchase, in the first period, of state‐by‐state default insurance. These insurance contracts are offered by lenders. The insurance cost or revenue is a linear charge and plays the role of a spread penalizing borrowers who will incur in default and benefiting lenders who will suffer default. Under these assumptions, equilibrium always exists.  相似文献

This paper links the super‐multiplier to Keynesian macroeconomics, showing it to be the most Keynesian of growth perspectives. Next, the paper shows that the super‐multiplier is a micro‐economically coherent theory of investment and capital accumulation. Firms’ decisions regarding capital accumulation coordinate demand and supply growth in goods markets. The paper then explores the implications of incorporating the super‐multiplier in the neo‐Kaleckian and Cambridge growth models. Lastly, it shows how labor markets and unemployment can be added into super‐multiplier models to provide a comprehensive growth model that addresses Solow's (1956, Journal of Economics, 70, 65–94) labor market knife‐edge problem. Incorporating labor markets does not change the fundamental super‐multiplier result that growth is determined by the growth of autonomous demand.  相似文献

We study portfolio selection in a model with both temporary and transient price impact introduced by Garleanu and Pedersen. In the large‐liquidity limit where both frictions are small, we derive explicit formulas for the asymptotically optimal trading rate and the corresponding minimal leading‐order performance loss. We find that the losses are governed by the volatility of the frictionless target strategy, like in models with only temporary price impact. In contrast, the corresponding optimal portfolio not only tracks the frictionless optimizer, but also exploits the displacement of the market price from its unaffected level.  相似文献

This article uses the algorithm developed by Ritchken and Sankarasubramanian (1995) to make comparisons among the Heath—Jarrow—Morton (HJM) models (Heath, Jarrow, & Morton, 1992) with different volatility structures in pricing the Eurodollar futures options. We show that the differences among the HJM models as well as the difference between the HJM models and Black's model can be insignificant when the volatility of the forward rate is relatively small. Moreover, our findings imply that the difference between the American‐style and European‐style options is insignificant for options with a life of less than 1 year. However, the difference can be significant for options with a 1‐year maturity, the difference depending on the exercise price. Finally, our tests indicate that the difference between the forward price and the futures price is insignificant if the volatility parameter is low enough and when the volatility of the spot rate is proportional to the spot rate. A higher volatility parameter can lead to a significant difference between the forward price and the futures price, although its impact on the price of the options will still be trivial. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. By Jensen's inequality, a model's forecasts of the variance and standard deviation of returns cannot both be unbiased. This study explores the bias in GARCH type model forecasts of the standard deviation of returns, which we argue is the more appropriate volatility measure for most financial applications. For a wide variety of markets, the GARCH, EGARCH, and GJR (or TGARCH) models tend to persistently over‐estimate the standard deviation of returns, whereas the ARLS model of L. Ederington and W. Guan (2005a) does not. Furthermore, the GARCH and GJR forecasts are especially biased following high volatility days, which cause a large jump in forecast volatility, which is rarely fully realized. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study investigates the effect of introducing index futures trading on the spot price volatility in the Chinese stock market. We employ a recently developed panel data policy evaluation approach (Hsiao, Ching, and Wan, 2011) to construct counterfactuals of the spot market volatility, based mainly on cross‐sectional correlations between the Chinese and international stock markets. This new method does not need to specify a particular regression or a time‐series model for the volatility process around the introduction date of index futures trading, and thus avoids the potential omitted variable bias caused by uncontrolled market factors in the existing literature. Our results provide empirical evidence that the introduction of index futures trading significantly reduces the volatility of the Chinese stock market, which is robust to different model selection criteria and various prediction approaches. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
