As a result of substantial and contemporary changes in the Nigerian business environment, a study was designed to evaluate the corporate strategies used by Nigerian organizations to cope with these changes. Using the survey research methodology of questionnaire on a sample of 1280 corporate executives working in quoted companies in Lagos state of Nigeria, it was found that some aspects of operationalised grand corporate strategies were highly emphasized by Nigerian organizations, while some were not highly emphasized. For example, market penetration strategy was the most emphasized grand corporate strategy, while planned liquidation strategy was the least emphasized strategy. Also, the research revealed that local competition had the highest impact on corporate strategy, while foreign competition posed the least impact on the corporate strategies of Nigerian companies. Nigerian organizations were most effective in achieving profitability objective through their grand corporate strategies, while corporate social responsibility was the least achieved corporate objective via corporate strategies. These findings and their managerial implications were discussed along the salient issues of the research with respect to the research problem, research questions, relevant literature, managerial actions, and Other cognate issues.  相似文献

Abstract

This exploratory study examines cultural characteristics of Nigerian negotiators. There is abundant research evidence that culture affects negotiating styles. As Nigeria constitutes a major market in Africa, knowledge of what behavior to expect from Nigerian negotiators can facilitate the negotiation process.

A questionnaire was administered to 200 Nigerian business men and women of the formal private sector of the economy, who were asked to rate themselves along ten dimensions of factors affected by culture. Responses were analyzed according to gender, age group, occupation and regional group. Statistical tests of significance were carried out.

Results reveal that Nigerians involved in negotiation on behalf of their organizations are likely to be relationship oriented and adopt a win-win approach, although the Yoruba may be less so than other ethnic groups. Nigerians will seek a specific form of agreement and avoid wasting time. They are likely to be moderate in formality and display of emotions. Women are much less likely than men to take high risks. An informal style will be more frequent among negotiators with an engineering background. Most Nigerians below the age of 40 who form part of a negotiating team will expect their leader to make decisions based on team consensus.

People from other countries wanting to do business with Nigerians should familiarize themselves with the way culture is likely to influence the 10 negotiation factors. They will then be better prepared to interpret and understand their counterparts' behavior at the negotiation table, and to communicate effectively.  相似文献

Abstract

The business environment in Nigeria has been unstable and chaotic for many years. Inflation reached 100% in 1995 and frequent unpredictable changes in economic policies have destabilized the economic environment. Yet, some business enterprises have sustained a tradition of superior competitive performance, earning good returns on investment even as many environment wearied multinationals divest.

The aim of this paper is to examine the actions taken by two successful companies to create value in Nigeria's uncertain business environment. The paper begins with a short summary of Nigeria's economic environment and its impact on manufacturing performance. It then reviews the principles of Economic Value Added (EVA) as a measure of corporate performance. The second part of the paper analyses the performance of two selected Nigerian companies-Nigerian Breweries Pic and Dunlop Nigeria Pic-and describes the strategies these companies used to achieve high and sustained corporate performance in Nigeria's economic environment. The paper ends with a discussion on the suitability of EVA-based performance measures in uncertain business environments.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

When the Internet started to establish itself in the corporate world, some observers foresaw a diminishing role for, if not the end to, many intermediary functions. Consequently it has been argued that suppliers will need to use the Internet and related technologies to cut costs and establish closer links with consumers by bypassing organizations that currently play an intermediary role in the traditional transaction system. The objective of this case study is to enhance the understanding of the process of transition from a traditional business model to an e-commerce model. It focuses on a very small business that has successfully navigated the transition to e-commerce.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Channel-centric selling approach is considered a competitive advantage when web-based technologies, such as the Internet, call centers, and database marketing, have emerged. A basic starting point is building corporate Internet Presence Sites (IPSs). The study attempts to answer the fundamental question of how effective IPSs are in reaching target customers and how they are integrated in multi-channel strategies for customer contact. In order to attain homogeneity in sampling, only the pharmaceutical industry was selected. The research entailed both content analysis of IPSs and a focus group study of physicians and pharmacists, conventionally the major target customers for pharmaceutical companies. Results showed that large companies incorporate significantly more attributes related to public relations, building of user group and communities, and services to business partners; but the interviewees did not report any usage of the IPSs. To increase return on companies' hefty investment, the researchers suggested a framework for companies to integrate web-based strategies with multiple sales channel design.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In the last few decades, advances in new information technologies in general and the adoption of the Internet in particular have attracted the attention of many academics and practitioners alike. Much of current research, however, is focused on for-profit organizations, and less emphasis has been placed on other organizational contexts, such as the non-profit sector. The purpose of this article is to analyze the attitude of NPO managers towards the Internet, the extent to which non-profit organizations are adopting this information technology and the perceived benefits and obstacles associated with its use. A sample of three hundred and ninety two non-profit organizations in Portugal was examined. The statistical analysis indicated that the existence of a favorable attitude towards the Internet was positively correlated with the perception of Internet benefit dimensions. Conversely, the study found no empirical evidence linking perceived Internet benefits with the various NPO fields of activity. The article concludes with a series of limitations and implications for both theory and practice.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Marketing has been dramatically changed by the Internet, the old rules do not apply. The Web allows companies to create products using micro-segmentation for target markets that are extremely small. Firms that want to be successful have to learn about resonance marketing. Resonance marketing used in conjunction with cause marketing and/or multicultural marketing can help a company find new market niches, charge premium prices. It can also be of great value to those interested in starting a small business.  相似文献

Abstract

One of the most frequently discussed topics in the current international business literature is the impact of the Internet on the internationalization of smaller manufacturing enterprises (SMEs). The study was carried out through a mail survey of the top executives of 125 Wisconsin firms. It examined 10 research hypotheses on internal and external factors which had been identified by previous research to influence the internationalization of SMEs through the Internet. Research findings conclude that the scope of internationalization of SMEs through the Internet is affected by internal factors, such as managements' perceptions of the effectiveness of their web sites as a marketing tool, lack of experience, and SMEs' potential usage of the Internet.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Both in business and in academic research, the Internet and electronic commerce grow exponentially. Attention has predominately been directed to developing the companies' capabilities and systems, while the consumers' perspective in contrast has received much less attention. This paper takes this perspective and focuses on online behavior of specifically 16- to 18-year-old teenagers. This particular segment tends to open to new things and know a great deal about using computers and the Internet. A questionnaire conducted among students in a high school in southern Finland showed that the overwhelming majority had computer and Internet access at home. Most of the young respondents had already used the Internet for various purposes and intend to do so even more in the future. For the young, information search and communication were the main purposes of using the Internet, and lower-value products related to mobile phones were the main products being bought online. At the same time they had different concerns that influence their behavior and, somewhat surprisingly, reported a slightly negative attitude towards electronic commerce. In line with previous studies, privacy and security issues were the primary concerns for the young Internet users. Gender aspects also emerged from the data since there were several differences in Internet usage and online purchasing between girls and boys. Based on the findings, the paper ends with implications and recommendations for companies attempting to approach teenagers in order to build relationships with them.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The Internet is the newest, most-rapidly changing and fastest-growing buying medium existing today. Its markets are increasing in number and complexity, more nearly reflecting the population in general. A valuable academic model for Internet marketers to consider when developing a business plan is an early buyer behavior model developed by Phillip Kotler, his Input-Output Model. Internet marketers should investigate outside influences on the potential buyer (Kotler's Inputs), means of reaching the prospect effectively (channels), the buyer's frame of mind (processor), and the choices available (outputs). Current “e-tail” examples are given for each of the four components in Kotler's model. Consulting companies that can assist marketers in attracting buyers have found the following techniques helpful: developing or fine tuning Internet sites, developing site-partnering strategies and online focus groups, as well as providing programs that watch prospects as they peruse a site.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Internet-enabled consumer devices are to be developed by the manufacturers. In this article, we examine how the Internet of things (IoT) can support marketing activities, including customer relationship management, business intelligence, and product design. In particular, the research reported in this article examines how the IoT can provide communication channels to support targeted marketing for product owners and enhance customer relationship management and product support. In addition, in this article, we examine how data gained from the operational use of Internet-enabled devices can support business intelligence in terms of how consumers actually use a product and can also support new product design in terms what features of current Internet-enabled products are most commonly used and how they are used.  相似文献

The emergence of the Internet and new software applications has provided an opportunity for some companies to move towards an extended enterprise business model–one that enhances value across the total supply chain. The prime driver of this trend has been the implementation of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. The research investigates whether traditional technology infrastructures, including information systems, have failed to deliver the level of support required to enable organizations to take advantage of the new extended business model. The research identifies a series of new and distinctive capabilities that influence the adoption of an extended business model. Supported by innovative technologies, leading companies are exploiting these distinctive capabilities to meet the challenge of the New Economy.  相似文献

Abstract

Employee award and incentive programs have become standard practice in the business world and in many nonprofit organizations. A study was conducted to measure employee beliefs about meeting management's objectives and employee satisfaction with award/incentive programs. It was found that employee motivation-in terms of liking awards, willingness to encourage others, and willingness to work hard for awards-was the most important factor contributing to employee satisfaction with the programs and employee perception that management's objectives were satisfied by these programs.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Domain names are a very important component of the Internet. The regulations and standards governing the registration of domain names have evolved over the past decade. Although various laws have been passed to protect businesses and organizations, this paper examines the effectiveness of such actions. A sample of Fortune 100 companies was examined to determine who had ownership of the top-level domain (.com, .net, .org, .biz) associated with their corporate second-level domain (e.g., walmart, intel). A summary and discussion of the findings are presented.  相似文献
