This paper analyzes a model wherein firms' owners hire biased managers in a differentiated goods duopoly with network effects. We show that whether firms hire an aggressive manager or not depends on both the degree of product differentiation and the strength of network effects in price competition whereas it does not depend on the degree of product differentiation or the strength of network effects in quantity competition. Thus, the attitudes of firms' managers depend on the type of competition and the relative magnitude of the strength of network effects to the degree of product differentiation. The need for highly qualified multicultural managers will increase as more organizations globalize their operations. These global managers may be perceived as organizational resources and, therefore, a resource-based view of human resource management is utilized. At the same time, relational view of human capital provides insight into the value of managers who have unique local market knowledge (i.e., social knowledge). By integrating the two aspects of the resource-based view, one can develop a dynamic capabilities approach to staffing global assignments. Within this integrative theoretical perspective, inpatriate managers (i.e., host or third country managers who are transferred into the home country organization on a semi-permanent to permanent basis) can be explored as a potential pool of uniquely qualified global managers to be utilized in global organizations. It is envisioned that through this unique building of managerial talents, organizations can develop/maintain a distinct competitive advantage in the markets they enter. This article explores inpatriation as an innovative means to develop managers as strategic resources to be used in formulating and implementing a global strategic plan.  相似文献

A bstract .   This article studies the evolution of the economic man ( Homo economicus ) from its original conception until the current day. By analyzing the discourse of economic articles, we provide a chronological account of the economic man's intellectual and philosophical development as it evolved from what we term the philosophical age to the neoclassical age and finally to the strategic age. The article then shows how the economic man in the strategic age is slowly finding convergence with the sociological man ( Homo sociologicus ). A reconciliation of the two sapiens is difficult. However, recent papers on behavioral and experimental economics provide insights into a possible reconciliation. Our study argues that the purpose of the sociological man is to identify who he is, how he interacts with people within a society, and the antecedents to such behaviors. Homo economicus, however, has no overarching philosophical assumptions on what he values. The objectives of each discipline are different and, once one is mapped onto the other, it is unclear if there is truly any tension between them.  相似文献

As well as specifying functional, business unit, and corporate levels of strategy, early strategy scholars delineated enterprise level strategy as the uppermost level of strategy. Enterprise strategy articulates how the firm engages with actors in its economic, social, and political environment to ensure long‐term corporate performance. As a growing body of evidence shows, heterogeneity in how firms identify, and engage with, their stakeholders can explain why some firms outperform their peers. However, my literature survey of more than three decades of published research reveals that enterprise strategy has stayed firmly in the shadows behind business and corporate strategy. Furthermore, many theories of firm–stakeholder relationships are normative (i.e. explain how firms should act) and do not inform strategy effectively. In this paper, I argue why enterprise strategy research is required as a cohesive body of work that connects with research in business and corporate strategy. I finish by proposing three research domains – strategic goals, organization design, and organization boundaries – that hold the potential to link stakeholder issues with mainstream concerns in strategy research and, thus, to revive a coherent research programme in enterprise level strategy.  相似文献

随着世界发展的全球化趋势,翻译的范围越来越广,涵盖各个领域。按照文本的类型,翻译可分为文学翻译和非文学翻译。外宣翻译是翻译的一种特殊形式,狭义的外宣翻译包括各种媒体报道,政府文件公告,政府及企事业单位的介绍、公示语、信息资料等实用文体的翻译。外宣翻译的特点是把中文译成外语,译文的读者是外国人,更注重译文和译文读者。纽马克认为,文学翻译以语义翻译为主,非文学翻译以交际翻译为主。外宣翻译的文本主要是非文学文本,应采用交际翻译的方法。  相似文献

This research focuses on the distinctions between formal and informal third parties articulated by Kolb and Sheppard (1985), the most important of which is the relationship that exists between the third party and the disputants. Several hypotheses are advanced regarding the consequences of a sudden change in the relationship on the process and outcomes of the intervention. An experimental simulation of a supervisor-subordinate discussion (about a dispute among subordinates) is conducted with 62 undergraduate volunteers as participants. The supervisors in the experimental group receive negative affective information about the subordinate prior to the meeting, which is expected to influence the relationship and hence the intervention. Results indicate that in the experimental condition performance evaluations were lower, ratings of trust were lower, and the atmosphere in the discussion was rated as less friendly. Interestingly, in dyads where the negative information was discussed openly each of the ratings was higher than when the negative information was not discussed, as was the satisfaction reported by each of the participants. The implications of these findings for future research are discussed.  相似文献
