REGIONAL VARIATION IN LIVELIHOOD STRATEGIES IN MALAWI

We identified livelihood strategies at the household level as a function of assets held using survey data from Malawi. We only included endowments that we expected to be predetermined. As expected, land, household size, age and primary education are important determinants of livelihood strategies. It also turned out to be significant regional variation in livelihood strategies, with more diversification in the southern region, and with regional variation in the role of ethnic and religious identity as determinants of livelihood strategies. In particular, we found that households from the Chewa community have more livelihood opportunities in the south, where they are in a minority.

THE PRICING SYSTEM IN PUBLIC ENTERPRISE IN INDIA

This review of pricing in Indian public enterprise is broadly concerned with the relationship, planned or actual, between prices and surpluses, the distinctive techniques of pricing adopted by different public enterprises, and the conceptual as well as the practical implications of the pricing policies adopted in the public sector. Except for a few remarks on state government enterprises which, in fields other than electricity and road transport, yet constitute a relatively small segment of the public sector in the country, the present study relates mainly to the enterprises of the central government.     

LONG-TERM CHANGES IN FOOD CONSUMPTION IN JAPAN*

The Japanese economy has shown a high rate of growth compared with European countries and America. Food consumption in Japan, however, has risen less rapidly than in these countries. The purpose of this paper is to explain the prewar rigidity in food consumption in Japan and to show how this has changed in the postwar period. The main factor in the rise of food consumption is usually the increase in per-capita income. Consumption of starchy foods generally decreases at certain levels of percapita income. In Japan, however, this level of income is lower than in other countries. While in the West the decline in demand for starchy foods has generally been due to the increased substitution of livestock products, in Japan this has been due mainly to low caloric consumption. Before the Second World War, starch intake in Japan remained fairly constant despite the rise in per-capita income. One reason for this rigidity is Japan's fondness for rice. In the postwar period, however, income elasticity for food and drink has doubled and livestock products have become more important, thus raising total caloric intake. This shift in food consumption, however, has caused problems for food production and agricultural incomes.     

ROLE OF GOVERNANCE IN EXPLAINING DOMESTIC INVESTMENT IN NIGERIA

This study examines the determinants of domestic investment in Nigeria with a special focus on the role of governance. The estimations are carried out with time series data from 1975 to 2009 using the Johansen estimation techniques. The results conform to the findings of existing literature that real output, user cost of capital and level of financial development are significant determinants of domestic investment in Nigeria. The distinctive feature of the paper is the significant role played by governance in explaining the long‐term pattern of domestic investment in Nigeria. The results from the long‐run estimation and the impulse responses revealed that a well‐structured and stable socio‐economic environment will boost domestic investment over the long run. Therefore, in modelling domestic investment for Nigeria, it is imperative to incorporate the significant role played by governance. 1

他山之石——硅谷的空气里飘着什么?
