Concern for environmental damage caused by industries' pollution has reached fever pitch globally.Proactive waste management systems practiced today are still in the“end-of-the-pipe”phase.They need to move beyond recycling to work at minimizing waste generation.This can be done by revisiting the entire production processes of different industries.Worldwide, companies are waking up to the fact that the only sustainable path to the future is the observance of the zero emissions doctrine. As a new paradigm,zero waste has to be embraced with a zeal that goes beyond recycling waste.At the basic level,it would mean that the manufacturer takes back some part of the product for reuse. The significant barriers to zero-waste drive are evident.If there was resistance to setting up effluent treatment plants in the early 1990s,radical shifts in today's production process are bound to face stronger resistance. The only answer to all this is that polluting industries are inefficient,as research will show.These industries have a short lease on life if they continue down this path.Consumers are already bearing the costs of pollution;they just might be willing to share the price of protection. Governments could subsidize this,but at a cost to the company in terms of higher taxes.And most of all,zero emission would allow companies the opportunity to save costs in the long term. Advertisers grappling with the vagaries of a global marketplace require a perspective that is comprehensive of the issues affecting their craft. The trade press is one information source that is commonly mined by agency researchers seeking to remain current on the international front. This article attempts to transform impressions gained from such casual reading into a more systematic and useful framework for interpreting the global marketplace. Drawing on a content analysis of information presented in the pages of the "International" section of the trade paper Advertising Age, a perspective of international marketing is advanced, the utility of that perspective to advertising researchers is explored, and the implications of that perspective for international advertising strategy are examined.

What Does it Mean when Mitchell Gets an ‘A’ in Business Ethics? or the Importance of Service Learning

In this essay I show that business needs business school graduates who are capable of ethical business action. Thus, business ethics courses should help students develop the capacities and skills they will need to act ethically at work. Towards this developmental end, I list eight steps business ethicists can take to implement service learning in their courses. I show how service learning in the classroom can be combined with a college honorary program to promote ethical business actions in students.

Going Public and the Sale of Shares with Heterogeneous Investors: Agent‐Based Computational Modelling and Computer Simulations

In this paper we use agent‐based computational modelling and computer simulations to examine the interrelationship between different selling strategies for going public. A great deal of recent empirical evidence suggests that to maximise the revenue raised from the shares sold in the public offering, it is fundamental to choose the appropriate design for the sale which, in turn, reflects the final ownership structure. This literature establishes that the market for shares is segmented and, particularly, that firms manage the sale of shares with the purpose of discriminating between relatively small and passive investors and applicants for large potentially controlling blocks. One of the key questions in this area, then, is: How and to what extent should this heterogeneity among potential investors influence the firm's strategy for selling shares? Here we attempt to address this question from the standpoint of using agent‐based computational modelling and computer simulations. Results show that the design of the sale is an important determinant of the performance of the negotiation process through which the firm is sold. A sequential sale beginning with an initial public offering of dispersed shares, followed by a negotiated sale of a controlling block is, in general, more effective than other alternative selling strategies. Changing the negotiation protocol itself can act as an effective way of impacting upon the revenue raised and the length of the process. The interrelationship between the method of sale and the performance may also depend on the degree of cognitive accuracy that characterises the negotiating agents' mental representations of their physical and social environment.     

Going Mainstream—What Does It Truly Mean Anyway?

Our focus is the poorly defined notion of mainstream. Mainstream is a commonly used word in both the lay and scientific literature but one that most people find difficult to define. Using experimental design of ideas (IdeaMap®.Net), we looked at how combinations of phrases fit the notion of mainstream. Experimental design forces the respondent to evaluate “mainstream” as an intuitive percept, rather than intellectualizing their answer. The data showed the part-worth contribution of each of 36 phrases about mainstream to the general concept of mainstream. Knowing how each specific phrase drives the perception of mainstream provides a glimpse into the respondent's mind.

The global financial crisis has made a huge impact on China export-based enterprises, among which the first affected industry was textile industry. According to the latest reports from China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology （MIIT） issued in November 2008, revealed that profits for the textile industry in China that had increased 36.9% in 2007, and decreased by 0.7% for the same period in 2008. This amounted in a total loss of RMB 22.13 billion, an increase of 97.7%, with the scope of loss reaching up to 20.4%.     

Different Pathways that Suggest Whether Auditors’ Going Concern Opinions are Ethically Based

Several critics have reopened the continuing debate regarding the credibility of the auditing profession in part because of auditors’ reluctance to issue warning signals to investors. At the root of auditors’ lack of independence issues are conflicts of interest resulting from the structural features of auditor–client relationship. The Throughput Model (TP) is advanced to illustrate how ethical issues may be influenced by conflicts of interest. In the first stage, the TP provides an isolation of auditors’ ethical positions from six ethical different perspectives. In the second stage, previous TP theory is built upon by arguing a simultaneous analysis of how conflicts of interests may induce auditors’ behavior. We conclude that in the current low litigation risk environment, auditors’ ethical behavior (both conscious and unconscious) is clearly ‹unbalanced’ favoring the reluctance to issue warning signals. Finally, we offer a discussion of potential solutions to improve ethical issues.

Going Beyond Customers – A Business Segmentation Approach Using Network Pictures to Identify Network Segments

Existing approaches to segmentation, in particular business segmentation, are often conceptualized and applied in a limiting way, providing a narrow interpretation of the surrounding business network. This could be attributed to a rather myopic view of the multiple complexities and indirect links inherent in networks of business exchange relationships. The task for companies developing innovative segmentation approaches is to simultaneously enhance the company’s understanding of downstream as well as upstream preferences and resources, while going beyond immediate interaction partners to include relevant indirect business partners. The challenge is therefore not to identify attractive customer segments, but attractive network segments. As such, the managerial challenge becomes one of creating a business network segmentation from the perspective of a focal company within this network, taking a far wider interpretation of the concept of segmentation. Using the concept of network pictures, we outline the different dimensions that are important within a business network segmentation, and exemplify their use through a case study of an entrepreneurial company. Our study contributes to the literature by providing a detailed example of a practical application of abstract concepts, in this case the translation of the network picture concept into a way to apply a business network segmentation to an entrepreneurial context.
