This paper considers product elimination in the financial services sector. Specifically it identifies the factors that cause an organisation to question the viability of a product — a key element of effective end-stage product management. A questionnaire was mailed to 196 individuals with experience of product elimination in retail banks, building societies and retail insurance organisations. Fifty-six usable questionnaires were returned. It was found that there were 32 key drivers of product elimination. These were grouped into eight interrelated areas: product led; strategic led; customer led; cost led; information technology led; operational led; personnel led; and externally led. It was also found that there were three functional conditions characterising the nature of the drivers: an elimination driver seldom appears without warning; the organisation generates the majority of reasons for product removal; the causes of elimination tend to reflect the overall operating context of the business. It is concluded that focusing on past elimination may not be helpful in predicting future requirements. Effective product elimination requires that organisations are able to identify drivers and be willing to act upon them. Many drivers are within the organisations' control and it is often the action (or inaction) of the organisation that creates the need for elimination.  相似文献

We study whether early stage investors have gender biases using a proprietary data set from AngelList that allows us to observe private interactions between investors and fundraising startups. We find that male investors express less interest in female entrepreneurs compared to observably similar male entrepreneurs. In contrast, female investors express more interest in female entrepreneurs. These findings do not appear to be driven by within-gender screening/monitoring advantages or gender differences in risk preferences. Moreover, the male-led startups that male investors express interest in do not outperform the female-led startups they express interest in—they underperform. Overall, the evidence is consistent with gender biases.  相似文献

This paper examines the causes and consequences of venture capital (VC) stage financing. Using information about the physical location of an entrepreneurial firm and the geographic distance between the VC investor and the firm, I show that VC investors located farther away from an entrepreneurial firm tend to finance the firm using a larger number of financing rounds, shorter durations between successive rounds, and investing a smaller amount in each round. However, VC investors' propensity to stage is independent of whether the firm is located in a close-knit community. I also find that VC staging positively affects the entrepreneurial firm's propensity to go public, operating performance in the initial public offering (IPO) year, and post-IPO survival rate, but only if the firm is located far away from the VC investor. However, the effect of VC staging on entrepreneurial firm's performance is independent of whether it is located in a close-knit community. The findings are robust to a variety of alternative proximity measures, instrumental variables, and econometric approaches for dealing with endogeneity problems.  相似文献

Futures research is currently in a state of abeyance and may well be approaching a critical crossroad. In order to survive it needs to dispense with its tendency to be ‘all things to all people’, dealing with almost any activity that involves the future, and define for itself a unique and synthesizing role within a larger forecasting and planning framework. The primary focus of futures research in the next decade should be in the public sector where the need is greater, however a clear separation must be maintained between its advocacy (value-driven) activities and those that are conceptual and analytical.  相似文献
