Learning to save in a voluntary pension system: toward an agent-based model

Mandatory pension systems partially replace old-age income, therefore the government matches additional life-cycle savings in a voluntary pension system. Though the individual saving decisions are apparently independent, the earmarked taxes (paid to finance the matching) connect them. Previous models either neglected the endogenous tax expenditures (e.g. Choi et al., in: Wise (ed) Perspectives in the economics of aging, University of Chicago Press, Chicago, pp 81–121, 2004) or assumed very sophisticated saving strategies (e.g. Fehr et al. in FinanzArchiv Pub Finance Anal 64:171–198, 2008). We create twin models: myopic workers learn (i) from farsighted workers using public information (analytic model) and (ii) also from each other (agent-based model). These models provide more realistic results on saving behavior and the impact of matching on the income redistribution than the earlier models.

It could have been me: Proximity motivates disaster giving

Effects of physical proximity of potential donors to a disaster location were studied. Physical proximity increased counterfactual thoughts, that is, thoughts that the donors themselves might have suffered from the event if the circumstances had been a bit different. Counterfactuals, in turn, increased reported willingness to help the victims of the disaster. The same effects were found for hypothetical proximity, in the form of a desire to visit the impacted location before the disaster occurred. The pattern was consistent across five correlational and experimental studies, which focused on a range of real‐life and fictitious disasters. The findings are important because they can explain why people and governments often dwell on relatively minor problems at home rather than thousands of people suffering and dying overseas. The findings also suggest an easy and cost‐effective way of boosting donations to disaster victims.

Public Service Broadcasting: A Paradox of our Time

The broadcasting industry remains the last refuge of belief in the virtues of public ownership and public control. The tradition of the free press, privately owned and independent of government, is foreign to broadcasting. The conditions that make free competition possible in broadcasting are now becoming a reality in the UK, but government policy is to strengthen public service broadcasting.

Degrees of tax indexation and nominal interest rates: Effects of inflation on incentives to save and invest

This paper examines the effects of inflation expectations on nominal interest rates, and incentives to save and invest under partial and complete tax indexation schemes. One would expect that a partially indexed structure would be better than a non-indexed system. However, this is not the case—it reduces the adverse effects of inflation on the incentives to save, but accentuates them on the incentives to invest. Moreover, a change from a non-indexed tax structure to a fully-indexed structure will, ceteris paribus, lead to lower equilibrium interest rates, whereas a switch to a partially indexed system will imply higher rates.

Ten years later: where is our common future now?

In 1996 a paper entitled ‘Where is our common future?’ in Sustainable Development maintained that the world's largest oil companies, the Seven Sisters, were two giant steps away from sustainable development in their 1993 environmental values, visions and policies. These factors matched the level of their business environment; hence, the Sisters had positioned themselves to meet the needs of their business environment, but not the needs of the ecological environment. This is a 10‐year follow‐up study of these findings. The analysis of the 2003 environmental values, visions, business environment, general strategic management and environmental policies of the current Four Sisters – BP(Amoco), ChevronTexaco, ExxonMobil and Shell – indicates that these companies have moved one step towards sustainable development. However, their business environment has moved two steps, firmly rooting itself in ecocentric sustainable development – and now runs ahead of the Sisters in principle but not yet in practice. In the long run, the Four Sisters need to exchange their technocentric values, traditional visions and conventional policies for ecocentric values, progressive visions and entrepreneurial policies to be able to participate in Our Common Future.
