Summary A sequential two-sample grouped rank test with two possible decisions (onesided testing) developed by WILCOXON, RHODES and BRADLEY (1963) is generalized to a sequential test with three possible decisions (two-sided testing) using a method given by SOBEL and WALD (1949). An auxiliary table with some moments concerning LEHMANN'S alternatives for the normal distribution, is given in order to facilitate the choice of the alternative hypotheses.  相似文献

Hinkley (1977) derived two tests for testing the mean of a normal distribution with known coefficient of variation (c.v.) for right alternatives. They are the locally most powerful (LMP) and the conditional tests based on the ancillary statistic for μ. In this paper, the likelihood ratio (LR) and Wald tests are derived for the one‐ and two‐sided alternatives, as well as the two‐sided version of the LMP test. The performances of these tests are compared with those of the classical t, sign and Wilcoxon signed rank tests. The latter three tests do not use the information on c.v. Normal approximation is used to approximate the null distribution of the test statistics except for the t test. Simulation results indicate that all the tests maintain the type‐I error rates, that is, the attained level is close to the nominal level of significance of the tests. The power functions of the tests are estimated through simulation. The power comparison indicates that for one‐sided alternatives the LMP test is the best test whereas for the two‐sided alternatives the LR or the Wald test is the best test. The t, sign and Wilcoxon signed rank tests have lower power than the LMP, LR and Wald tests at various alternative values of μ. The power difference is quite large in several simulation configurations. Further, it is observed that the t, sign and Wilcoxon signed rank tests have considerably lower power even for the alternatives which are far away from the null hypothesis when the c.v. is large. To study the sensitivity of the tests for the violation of the normality assumption, the type I error rates are estimated on the observations of lognormal, gamma and uniform distributions. The newly derived tests maintain the type I error rates for moderate values of c.v.  相似文献

In this paper the power of the two-sample test of W ilcoxon for Logistic shift alternatives is computed by using two approximations, based on the asymptotic Normality of the test statistic. The sample sizes considered are m = n = 6, m = n= 10 and m = n = 15 . These approximations are compared with the results of an experimental determination by Monte Carlo techniques.  相似文献

We suggest improved tests for cointegration rank in the vector autoregressive (VAR) model and develop asymptotic distribution theory and local power results. The tests are (quasi-)likelihood ratio tests based on a Gaussian likelihood, but as usual the asymptotic results do not require normally distributed innovations. Our tests differ from existing tests in two respects. First, instead of basing our tests on the conditional (with respect to the initial observations) likelihood, we follow the recent unit root literature and base our tests on the full likelihood as in, e.g., Elliott et al. (1996). Second, our tests incorporate a “sign” restriction which generalizes the one-sided unit root test. We show that the asymptotic local power of the proposed tests dominates that of existing cointegration rank tests.  相似文献

The small sample and asymptotic properties of nonparametric tests for paired sampled are examined. Linear rank statistics are compared with the paired t-test and the Wilcoxon-signed-rank test in simulation studies. From a minimax point of view the linear rank statistics turn out to be the best. Moreover, it is illustrated that the Wilcoxon-signed-rank test should not be used if it is not clear that the differences of the pairs have a symmetric distribution.  相似文献

Summary Results are given of a sampling study of the sensitivities of two statistical procedures viz. the D'A gostino and the W ilk -S hapiro test of normality. Four alternative distributions were considered. For 5 small sample sizes the test of D'A gostino seems to be clearly dominated by the W ilk -S hapiro test for each of the 4 alternatives. For sample size n = 100 the recently developed approximate W ilk -S hapiro test seems to dominate the D'A gostino test for the U -shaped distribution; however, little can be said about the difference in power of these two tests for the other 3 alternatives. Random samples generated from the standard normal distribution showed the degree of approximation of the percentiles of each test procedure to be good.  相似文献

For univariate time series we suggest a new variant of efficient score tests against fractional alternatives. This test has three important merits. First, by means of simulations we observe that it is superior in terms of size and power in some situations of practical interest. Second, it is easily understood and implemented as a slight modification of the Dickey–Fuller test, although our score test has a limiting normal distribution. Third and most important, our test generalizes to multivariate cointegration tests just as the Dickey–Fuller test does. Thus it allows to determine the cointegration rank of fractionally integrated time series. It does so by solving a generalized eigenvalue problem of the type proposed by Johansen (J. Econ. Dyn. Control 12 (1988) 231). However, the limiting distribution of the corresponding trace statistic is χ2, where the degrees of freedom depend only on the cointegration rank under the null hypothesis. The usefulness of the asymptotic theory for finite samples is established in a Monte Carlo experiment.  相似文献

A simulation study was conducted to investigate the effect of non normality and unequal variances on Type I error rates and test power of the classical factorial anova F‐test and different alternatives, namely rank transformation procedure (FR), winsorized mean (FW), modified mean (FM) and permutation test (FP) for testing interaction effects. Simulation results showed that as long as no significant deviation from normality and homogeneity of the variances exists, generally all of the tests displayed similar results. However, if there is significant deviation from the assumptions, the other tests are observed to be affected at considerably high levels except FR and FP tests. As a result, when the assumptions of factorial anova F‐test are not met or, in the case those assumptions are not tested whether met, it can be concluded that using FR and FP tests is more suitable than the classical factorial anova F‐test.  相似文献

This paper introduces a rank-based test for the instrumental variables regression model that dominates the Anderson–Rubin test in terms of finite sample size and asymptotic power in certain circumstances. The test has correct size for any distribution of the errors with weak or strong instruments. The test has noticeably higher power than the Anderson–Rubin test when the error distribution has thick tails and comparable power otherwise. Like the Anderson–Rubin test, the rank tests considered here perform best, relative to other available tests, in exactly identified models.  相似文献

We study one aspect of applying Edgeworth expansions to linear rank statistics. Since the use of such expansions is often recommended already for moderate sample sizes we investigate for this case the gain of accuracy for the level of significance of some linear rank tests when their critical values are derived from an Edgeworth expansion instead of from a normal approximation. We verify Does' conditions (1983) for the validity of the expansions for four rank statistics of general interest and show by a numerical study that an Edge-worth expansion does not outperform the normal approximation in all situations. A considerable improvement shows up however for the Klotz test at the 5% level.  相似文献

The problem of comparing the precisions of two instruments using repeated measurements can be cast as an extension of the Pitman-Morgan problem of testing equality of variances of a bivariate normal distribution. Hawkins (1981) decomposes the hypothesis of equal variances in this model into two subhypotheses for which simple tests exist. For the overall hypothesis he proposes to combine the tests of the subhypotheses using Fisher's method and empirically compares the component tests and their combination with the likelihood ratio test. In this paper an attempt is made to resolve some discrepancies and puzzling conclusions in Hawkins's study and to propose simple modifications.
The new tests are compared to the tests discussed by Hawkins and to each other both in terms of the finite sample power (estimated by Monte Carlo simulation) and theoretically in terms of asymptotic relative efficiencies.  相似文献

Data driven test procedure for detection of change is introduced and its properties are studied. The new solution is max-type statistic related to data-driven rank tests for two-sample subproblems. Simulations show that the new test possesses high and stable power. The test is consistent at essentially any alternative. Asymptotic null distribution of the test is derived. The conventional testing procedure may mislead one into accepting the null of no cointegration or the null of a cointegrating rank smaller than the true rank when there is a trend-break under the alternative hypothesis. This paper proposes tests for cointegrating rank that have power against the trend-break alternative. The proposed tests are applied to the US money demand function. The results support the Campbell–Perron conjecture: money, income and interest rates are cointegrated around a broken trend.  相似文献

We develop some tests for characterizing the cointegration space of a cointegrated vector autoregressive model when its long-run parameters are modified by a structural break at a known date. We first consider the case in which the break does not affect the loading factors and second the more general one in which all long-run parameters change. For each configuration, we design procedures to test for the cointegration rank as for the number of directions which are changing between the two regimes. For the simplest case, the cointegration rank test is also extended to the case of an unknown date of shift.  相似文献

This paper applies classical exponential-family statistical theory to develop a unifying framework for testing structural parameters in the simultaneous equations model under the assumption of normal errors with known reduced-form variance matrix. The results can be divided into the limited-information and full-information categories. In the limited-information model, it is possible to characterize the entire class of similar tests in a model with only one endogenous explanatory variable. In the full-information framework, this paper proposes a family of similar tests for subsets of endogenous variables’ coefficients. For both limited- and full-information models, there exist power upper bounds for unbiased tests. When the model is just-identified, the Anderson–Rubin, score, and (pseudo) conditional likelihood ratio tests are optimal. When the model is over-identified, the (pseudo) conditional likelihood ratio test has power close to the power envelope when identification is strong.  相似文献

This paper uses Monte Carlo experimentation to investigate the finite sample properties of the maximum likelihood (ML) and corrected ordinary least squares (COLS) estimators of the half-normal stochastic frontier production function. Results indicate substantial bias in both ML and COLS when the percentage contribution of inefficiency in the composed error (denoted by *) is small, and also that ML should be used in preference to COLS because of large mean square error advantages when * is greater than 50%. The performance of a number of tests of the existence of technical inefficiency is also investigated. The Wald and likelihood ratio (LR) tests are shown to have incorrect size. A one-sided LR test and a test of the significance of the third moment of the OLS residuals are suggested as alternatives, and are shown to have correct size, with the one-sided LR test having the better power of the two.The author would like to thank Bill Griffiths, George Battese, Howard Doran, Bill Greene and two anonymous referees for valuable comments. We consider the power properties of the CUSUM and CUSUM of squares (CUSQ) tests in the presence of a one-time change in the parameters of a linear regression model. A result due to Ploberger and Krämer [1990. The local power of the cusum and cusum of squares tests. Econometric Theory 6, 335–347.] is that the CUSQ test has only trivial asymptotic local power in this case, while the CUSUM test has non-trivial local asymptotic power unless the change is orthogonal to the mean regressor. The main theme of the paper is that such conclusions obtained from a local asymptotic framework are not reliable guides to what happens in finite samples. The approach we take is to derive expansions of the test statistics that retain terms related to the magnitude of the change under the alternative hypothesis. This enables us to analyze what happens for non-local to zero breaks. Our theoretical results are able to explain how the power function of the tests can be drastically different depending on whether one deals with a static regression with uncorrelated errors, a static regression with correlated errors, a dynamic regression with lagged dependent variables, or whether a correction for non-normality is applied in the case of the CUSQ. We discuss in which cases the tests are subject to a non-monotonic power function that goes to zero as the magnitude of the change increases, and uncover some curious properties. All theoretical results are verified to yield good guides to the finite sample power through simulation experiments. We finally highlight the practical importance of our results.  相似文献

A periodical rectangular lattice, with a period of k.m, is considered. Thus there are N = k.m points on the lattice, repeated in the two perpendicular directions. Two points are said to be "connected" if they are adjacent in a straight or diagonal way. Thus, if k and m 3, every point is connected with 8 other pooints. Out of the N points of the lattice, n points are selected and the total number of connections x, of all possible pairs of those n points is considered for a vocational preference test with k = m = 9, N = 81, n = 10. The problem is to test whether the sum y = x1+…+ x*** from a sample of h values of x, is significantly small, under the hypothesis that in the h cases the n points are selected at random with equal chance. A Monte-Carlo sample of 100 values of x was taken, using random numbers. For h = 1, the problem was solved by the determination of P( y x1), assuming that y is taken at random from the 101 values of x, supplied by the Monte-Carlo sample and x1 for fixed values of x1. For h - 2, a similar solution is given. For greater values of h, Student's two-sample test, with correction for continuity is suggested. For h = 2 the results of Student's test are compared with those of the solution mentioned above.
In the appendix a summary is given of results found by P.A.P Moran and P. V. Krishna Iyer for some closely related problems. Further some results concerning exact distributions, moments and asymptotic distributions for C. A. G. Nass' problem are given. Our objective is to find a simple, robust, reasonably powerful test for a shift in one or more of the slopes in a linear time series model at some unknown point of time. Two such tests are ‘Chow's test’ (1960) for a shift at the midpoint of the record and the ‘Farley-Hinich test’ (1970b); both can be performed easily with standard regression programs. In section 2, we compare the asymptotic properties of these tests when the disturbance variance is known. As expected, Chow's test is superior when the true shift is near the middle of the record; with a single, uniformly-distributed explanatory variable, the Farley-Hinich tests dominates over the remaining eighty-four percent of the record. In section 3, we describe the results of some Monte Carlo experiments with a finite sample, which can be summarized as follows. (i) The asymptotic results of section 2 were appropriate for finite sample power comparisons. (ii) The relative performance of the two tests does not depend appreciably on whether the variance is known. (iii) The likelihood ratio test, which is far more costly to perform than the other two tests, does not dominate either Chow's test or the Farley-Hinich test; it has moderately more power at the ends of the record, moderately less in the middle. The conclusion is clear: at low cost (in terms of computer cost and lost power), one can reduce the probability of over- looking a structural shift by routinely performing Chow's test or the Farley-Hinich test.  相似文献
