In this paper the relationship is examined between the average return and the risk of a sample of 144 French common stocks which traded continuously over the decade 1969–1979. Although it was found that a negative relationship existed between average return and systematic risk, sufficient evidence could not be gathered to reject the hypothesis that the pricing of French common stocks conforms to the Capital Asset Pricing Model. The nature and implications of the observed negative risk-return trade-off are discussed.  相似文献

In this paper the meaning of the January effect is clarified. The early literature indicates that differing views on the existence of such an effect were based on different data sets, various time periods, and different measurement tools. A model is formulated to test the January effect hypothesis with seven assets from 1871 to 1986, including tests performed for subperiods corresponding to different monetary regimes. The hypothesis tests incorporate an unbiased estimator to avoid the biases caused by heteroscedasticity and autocorrelation. Findings suggest that asset return behavior differs among assets and regimes.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the effects of unanticipated inflation on the market value of equity in a system with corporation tax and historic cost depreciation. It is shown that there exists a unique combination of debt and equity under which inflation neutrality is obtained, Whether or not unanticipated inflation hurts or benefits the stockholders in a particular firm depends upon a number of conditions. These include the depreciation rate of its assets relative to the amortization rate of its debt. Finally, the present tax system is contrasted with a fully indexed system involving replacement cost depreciation and indexation  相似文献

There is a continuing controversy as to whether the use of a constant risk adjusted discount rate in capital budgeting decisions implies that the risk of the cash flows increases over time. This paper shows that valuation using these discount rates implies an increasing premium for risk over time but that the increasing premium is due to the net impact of the uncertainty in the cash flow; uncertainty in future market expectations of the cash flow; and changes in the market price of risk. The risk of the cash flow itself need not be increasing over time.  相似文献

Previous empirical studies show that announcements of seasoned common stock registrations and issuances lead to significant reductions in common stock prices and shareholder wealth. Nevertheless, some firms issue common stock frequently. Our empirical study of nonutility firms that issued common stock four or more times within ten years shows that market reactions to announcements of offerings and to registrations are less unfavorable than typical reactions for infrequent issuers. A cross-sectional analysis reveals no unique characteristics that distinguish frequent issuers from one-time common equity issuers. In fact, the only detectable characteristic unique to the firms is that they issue common stock frequently.  相似文献
