A survey of exchange-traded basket instruments

This survey discusses basket financial instruments generically known as Index Participation shares (IPs). An IP is a hybrid instrument that has characteristics similar to those of existing index-futures contracts, options contracts, and stock-index mutual funds. An IP is a contract and does not represent direct ownership over any individual security. Similar to other derivatives, an IP has a clearing house guaranteeing its performance and a zero net supply. The equilibrium market price of an IP will differ from its underlying index's cash price by an amount defined as the IP basis. The IP basis will be determined by the dividend stream of the underlying index and expected short-term interest rates. IP contracts opened trading on the AMEX and PHILX exchanges on May 12, 1989, after the SEC lifted a temporary stay of trading.     

How does intellectual property protection in the host country affect outward foreign direct investment?

This paper empirically analyses the impact of a host country’s intellectual property (IP) protection on Chinese outward foreign direct investment (OFDI), employing panel data of 109 host countries’ FDI stocks and IP protection levels. Based on the regression results, it is concluded that the host country’s IP protection has a significant impact on Chinese OFDI. By including an interaction term into the regression, it can be seen that a host country’s trade openness enhances the influence of intellectual property protection on OFDI. Using subsample regressions, it was found that the positive effect of the protection of IP rights by the host country on China’s OFDI is stronger in the countries along China’s ‘Belt and Road’ initiative. For a subsample of countries with a lower degree of IP protection than China, the positive effect of IP protection is weaker than in ones with a higher IP protection level. The results obtained through a threshold regression, show that host countries can be divided into three categories, based on gross domestic product per capita, namely low, medium and high development levels. The higher the level of economic development of the host country, the greater the impact of IP protection on China’s OFDI. The host countries are also categorised into low-, medium- and high-level IP protection levels. As the level of a host country’s IP protection improves, it promotes OFDI from China.     

Aplicación de análisis discriminante para evaluar la productividad como resultado de la certificación BASC en las empresas de la ciudad de Cartagena

This research paper presents the evaluation of productivity in companies in the city of Cartagena as a result of the certification of said companies in the Business Anti-Smuggling Coalition (BASC). The methodology used calculated productivity indicators at 23 companies certified at BASC. Next, we used the Discriminant Analysis technique to explain the belonging and discrimination of each group of productivity indicators evaluated, resulting in the correlation between certified companies and increased productivity indices for 2008 and 2010. From the discriminant function obtained and the statistics analyzed, it can be concluded that certification in BASC standard showed no improvement in the indicators selected, but presented significant differences in the Gross Profit / Value Added (IP1), Operating Income / Operating Capital (IP5) and Net Income / Operating Capital (IP6) indicators.

投资性房地产公允价值计量的财务影响与决定因素:以北辰实业为例

以北辰实业为例,本文分析了企业在投资性房地产成本模式与公允价值计量模式之间选择的财务影响及其决定因素。与成本模式相比,投资性房地产公允价值计量将大幅提高其账面价值,加剧了企业当期净利润的波动。北辰实业在A股年报中采用成本模式,而在H股年报中采用公允价值计量,这主要源于以下因素:(1)香港会计准则与我国会计准则的差异;(2)两地监管机构对公允价值会计的态度不同;(3)两地投资性房地产信息披露的差异;(4)资本市场成熟度与投资者的理性程度的差异。最后我们总结了本案例对于企业选择公允价值计量模式、监管层推行公允价值会计与应对会计国际趋同三个方面的政策含义。
