This study investigates the effect of survey mode on respondent learning and fatigue during repeated choice experiments. Stated preference data are obtained from an experiment concerning high‐speed Internet service conducted on samples of mail respondents and online respondents. We identify and estimate aspects of the error components for different subsets of the choice questions, for both mail and online respondents. Results show mail respondents answer questions consistently throughout a series of choice experiments, but the quality of the online respondents' answers declines. Therefore, while the online survey provides lower survey administration costs and reduced time between implementation and data analysis, such benefits come at the cost of less precise responses. We use surveys in which respondents evaluate local amenities in Norway to compute proxy variables for the quality of local public services as well as other local amenities relevant to location decisions. Average satisfaction reported by the respondents is computed for each amenity and each municipality, adjusted for sample variation in personal characteristics and included as explanatory variables in a cross-section study of house prices. We find that house prices are increasing in satisfaction with cultural activities, health care, care for the elderly and public transportation.  相似文献

We report on the use of a highly portable computer for collecting precise and accurate data concerning specific social network ties. Our experience confirmed that a highly portable computer, when loaded with a flexible database management program, is a useful tool for such a task. Data entry can be done during the interview and information retrieval can provide immediate and useful information for the respondents. The use of the computer with semistructured interviews changes the dynamics of the interview situation. A three-way interaction is created between the interviewers, the respondents and the information in the database. We found that there were great benefits from having two or three respondents in the session, and that it was desirable to have two interviewers.  相似文献

The Association for International Cancer Research (AICR) successfully uses sweepstakes techniques to generate funds to support cancer research projects. These methods have taken AICR to the top 80 of UK charities, in terms of gross voluntary income. It is recognised, however, that this approach only motivates one constituency of potential supporters among the population. Recently AICR tested an alternative approach, designed to appeal to a different constituency of support. This paper summarises the thinking behind the trial programme and presents some of the initial findings. It also considers the fulfilment requirements and how they were addressed. Using a decision modeling approach, this research examined differences across levels of management in a large construction company concerning the criteria for a maintenance management control system. The six criteria were cost efficiency, productivity improvement, materials management, unification of work control, planning and scheduling, and information and retrieval. A decision-making exercise was constructed that asked the respondent to make recommendations concerning the approval or disapproval of 32 hypothetical maintenance management systems. Among the 60 managers who completed the exercise, there was evidence of significant differences across levels of management concerning the criteria for a maintenance management control system. Additionally, distortions were observed between what the managers said was important and what their decisions indicated. These data demonstrate that the decision modeling approach presented can be effectively used to examine the degree of consensus within an organization.  相似文献

Semiparametric econometric models contain both parametric and nonparametric components, reflecting in some fashion what has been learned from economic theory and previous empirical experience, and what remains unknown. They raise such questions as how well the parametric component can be estimated, and how to construct rules of inference with good statistical properties. To date, the extent to which UK organizations use human resource management (HRM) practices to promote pro-environmental behavior through workplace HRM policies and initiatives is under-researched within the literature. Therefore, this paper presents results of a survey investigating current HRM practices used to promote pro-environmental behavior in a sample of 214 UK organizations representing different sizes and industry sectors. Overall, findings indicated that HRM practices are not used to a great extent to encourage employees to become more pro-environmental. The most prevalent practices used within organizations incorporated elements of management involvement supporting the idea that managers are the gatekeepers to environmental performance. Although organizations indicated that some HRM practices were more effective than others at encouraging pro-environmental behavior in their staff, only a very small percentage of organizations actually conducted any form of evaluation; organizations consequently lack clear evidence as to whether their HRM practices actually result in employee behavior change. This paper surveys the existing empirical research that uses search theory to empirically analyze labor supply questions in a structural framework, using data on individual labor market transitions and durations, wages, and individual characteristics. The starting points of the literature are the Mincerian earnings function, Heckman's classic selection model, and dynamic optimization theory. We develop a general framework for the labor market where the search for a job involves dynamic decision making under uncertainty. It can be specialized to be in agreement with most published research using labor search models. We discuss estimation, policy evaluation with the estimated model, equilibrium model versions, and the decomposition of wage variation into factors due to heterogeneity of various model determinants as well as search frictions themselves. The difficulties related to the commercialization, or even to the introduction, of new technologies and solutions to common problems are well documented. The paper presents a case on how to introduce new technology to a complex research environment, in order to catalyse its commercialization. The central theme of the approach is on understanding all the possible applications and implications that the new technology shares when implemented to replace conventional solutions. The potential customer of the new technology and the related technological domains must be mapped systematically to establish technological trajectories which overlap with the possible applications. This mapping provides the framework for detailed application analysis with pointers to the right people responsible for the potential application area.The results produced indicate that three characteristic application classes for a new technology can be mapped. Special solutions pinpoint a non-standard application area where the new design is being implemented as a prototype. Research and development based applications require collaboration with the customer as the new technology may assist in achieving the goals set for the future. System applications emphasize the use of the new technology as part of a complete and widely used conventional system. A thorough case study is documented to demonstrate the classification of alternative application areas of a new technology. Also, the evolution of a new technology through different application classes is discussed. The case technology is related to high-speed electrical machines and the potential user is CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics.  相似文献

Over the past ten years there has been a considerable increase in application of theoretically correct measurement methods in determining the economic life of equipment. Approximately 89% of the firms surveyed have equipment replacement policies. The discounted rate of return method is the most widely used in determining the service life of equipment; the MAPI formula is not widely used. Difficulties in applying a replacement policy can be classified into three groups: operational, organizational, and economic. The problems mentioned most often are operational. In organizational difficulties there is usually a lack of coordination between staff and line managers. Economic problems are generally the limited funds available for equipment replacement. Formal educational programs are lacking for the development of equipment replacement managers. For the firms having replacement policies, individuals with engineering degrees are preferred over those in other disciplines for the management of the equipment replacement policy.  相似文献

The survey is focused on the typical problems in information transmission from experts to non-experts. Attention is paid to the factors that can affect information disclosure in models that apply a game-theoretic approach to the use of professional advice. In the economic literature expertise is mainly analyzed as a special case of asymmetric information between expert and non-expert. The contributions are reviewed according to a double criterion, that takes into account both the preferences of the experts and the properties of communication. On one side, either the non-expert plays the role of a decision-maker, who chooses an action that is payoff-relevant for the expert, or the preferences of the expert directly depend on some measure of his reputation as a high-ability forecaster. On the other side, communication can range from pure cheap talk to completely verifiable messages.  相似文献

The disposition effect is a well-recognized behavioral economic phenomenon which has been studied in numerous papers during the last three decades. Besides a literature review of the major theoretical, empirical, and experimental papers, the body of academic literature is subjected to a bibliometric analysis where all papers are taken into account which can be found via the search engine “EBSCOhost” (589 hits). This paper not only extensively describes the state of the art of research on the topic of the disposition effect. The combination of insights from a content analysis as well as a bibliometric analysis serves as a case study on the pattern of diffusion of research hypotheses and research methods. For example, it can be shown that the number of publications per year on the disposition effect remained relatively low subsequent to its discovery and only later started to substantially grow over time. On the other hand, the quality of papers, as approximated by the share of “A” journal articles per year, decreased over time.  相似文献
