This study examines the impact of foreign controlling shareholder trust on firm market risk using two measures of total and idiosyncratic risk. An extensive global sample of 12,496 firm-year observations from 43 countries is employed. The results show that firms controlled by foreign trusting shareholders display lower levels of risk in both market measures. Trust appears more important for firms based in countries with a less favourable institutional environment, whereby it varies with the investment horizon of foreign controlling shareholders. The results are robust after controlling for cultural measures, endogeneity, selection bias and alternate model specifications. 相似文献

Using online platforms to deliver educational content, some institutions have developed blended courses that combine the advantages of online instruction with traditional face-to-face (F2F) teaching. This study compares accounting student performance and satisfaction in two blended formats with similar content and design, i.e. F2F+ vs. Online+ courses. It also assesses the characteristics of students who choose the latter option over F2F+ courses. Students in four advanced accounting subjects were surveyed and their course performance was obtained. Results indicate that the main determinants of students’ decision to register for an Online+ course are retaking the course, increased weekly work hours, and belief that this type of blended course facilitates learning. Results show that students in advanced accounting courses with equivalent content and design perform similarly and have the same level of course satisfaction across course delivery formats, as hypothesized under equivalency theory. 相似文献

Various reports and research have documented the risks of global warming on humans and the non-human environment. A growing amount of media coverage positions the fight against global warming as a moral issue. However, additional research needs to be conducted regarding whether individuals’ risk perceptions are related to their moral attitudes and whether their moral attitudes toward global warming are associated with their behavioral intentions to alleviate global warming. Based on a cross-sectional survey (N = 572) and structural equation modeling analysis, the present investigation situated moral attitudes within a larger theoretical framework (i.e. the theory of planned behavior). Results found that the American public’s moral attitudes were predicted by subjective norms and risk to others and the environment, but not risk to themselves. Moral attitudes, in turn, predicted anticipated guilt. Collectively, moral attitudes, self-efficacy, anticipated guilt, and consideration of future consequences predicted one’s intentions to engage in behaviors to alleviate global warming. Both theoretical and practical implications are discussed. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Public administration is an important force influencing equality in today’s society. Like budgetary choices, public procurement has increasingly gained attention as a means to promote equality. Yet, there are important gaps in knowledge, especially regarding how equality requirements in public procurement affect company behaviour. This paper sheds first light on the impact strategic public procurement has on employers’ behaviour. Based on empirical research, this paper highlights that companies perceive a limited prevalence of equality stipulations in Scottish public procurement practices and raises doubts about the impact of public procurement practices to create a successful business case for equality. 相似文献

We study the investment behavior of foreign investors in association with an equity market liberalization, and find a strong link between foreigners’ trading and local market returns. In the period following the liberalization, net purchases by foreign investors induced a permanent increase in stock prices, suggesting that local firms reduced their cost of equity capital. We also find a strong link between a firm’s fraction of foreign ownership and the magnitude of the cost reduction. Foreign investors seem to prefer large and well-known firms, and these firms realize the largest reduction in capital cost. Furthermore, our analysis suggests that foreigners increase their net holding in firms that have recently performed well. Analyzing foreigners’ performance, we find very little evidence of informed trading, suggesting that risk sharing is the most plausible explanation for the reduction of the cost of equity capital. 相似文献

We examine the effects of state ownership, institutions and resource-seeking behavior on post-acquisition stock price returns of Chinese cross-border mergers and acquisitions over the period 1998–2008. Chinese acquiring firms experience negative returns ranging from 2.92 to 10.80 % in 12- and 60-month post-event periods, respectively. State ownership (SOE), interaction between R&D and SOE, formal institutional distance and acquirer size have a positive and significant impact on the long-term acquirer returns. However, the interaction between tangible resources and SOE and acquirer cash holdings appears to have a negative and significant impact on long-term returns. Overall, our results suggest that the state and institutions constitute important sources of long-term value creation for Chinese acquirers. 相似文献

The current literature provides mixed support for the positive influence of competitors on customers’ perceptions of price tolerance (Herrmann et al, Psychology & Marketing, 2004 21(7), 533–551). This paper examines a number of mediators and moderators of this relationship, such as positive switching barriers, negative switching barriers and customer satisfaction. A total of 162 valid responses was collected from the financial brokerage context by means of a random sample. The data were analysed using the Partial-least square (PLS) approach to structural equation modelling. The findings show that customers’ satisfaction with the service provider partially mediates the positive effect of alternatives on price tolerance. Negative, not positive, switching barriers were found to weaken the effect on price tolerance of the attractiveness of alternatives. 相似文献

Citizens’ trust in economic institutions has generally declined since the onset of the crisis. In particular, Eurobarometer surveys show that trust in the European Central Bank (ECB) has fallen significantly during the crisis. This paper studies the determinants of public trust in the ECB over the lifetime of the euro. Net trust in the ECB has decreased significantly in those countries which have experienced increasing sovereign bond yields and financial market turbulence. The finding that country-specific variables affect citizens’ trust in the ECB may seem counterintuitive. However, it is consistent with strong evidence in the political science literature showing that domestic considerations play a significant role when citizens get an opportunity to express their opinion on EU matters. 相似文献

This study explores how an organization’s controllers (management accountants) give sense to the information provided by its business intelligence (BI) system, and thus shape the construction of information trust. A qualitative case study was conducted within a Finnish food manufacturing company, building on the notion of trust related to management accounting information and sensemaking theory. The study was informed through open-ended interviews and an examination of internal accounting and management reports. The authors found that the company used an integrated BI system that enabled the production of information in a timely and perceivably standardized manner. Controllers managed this accounting information and gave sense to it, helping deliver a shared understanding of the daily business situation. The findings show that controllers play a pivotal role in building information trust by giving sense to the information provided by the BI system. 相似文献

Amid rapid growth of bancassurance in East Asian countries, particularly in South Korea and Taiwan, the article examines the determinants of this growth in these two countries, by testing the influence of ‘collectivism’ as a proxy for national culture on the relationship between cross-buying determinants and customers’ cross-buying intentions. The interviews were conducted during 2011 and 2012 with 13 professional senior managers and academics engaged in customers’ cross-buying activities of bancassurance in South Korea and Taiwan. ‘Perceived value’, ‘trust’, ‘image’ and ‘satisfaction’ were found to be the key determinants of customers’ cross-buying intentions on bancassurance in South Korea and Taiwan, among which ‘trust’ and ‘satisfaction’ were significantly influenced by ‘collectivism’. The article confirms that, even between countries with similar levels of ‘collectivism’, the influence of ‘collectivism’ can differ because of the determinants of cross-buying intentions on bancassurance. 相似文献

Despite the growing importance of PILOTs for cities and nonprofits, little is known about how characteristics of requests for PILOTs influence fairness perceptions and compliance. We examine how PILOT frame (carrot versus stick) and procedure (systematic versus ad hoc) jointly influence the fairness perceptions of requests for PILOTs and whether these perceptions, in turn, influence the likelihood of compliance. We conduct an experiment and find that requests framed as a carrot, rather than a stick, are perceived as more fair. Requests that are administered in a systematic, rather than ad hoc manner, are perceived as more fair, but only when the request is framed as a carrot. Perceptions of fairness, in turn, increase the likelihood that nonprofits will comply with the request for PILOTs. A follow-up survey of senior nonprofit executives confirms that PILOT frame and procedure affect their perceptions of fairness similar to our experimental participants. Importantly, survey participants indicate that perceptions of fairness are a significant determinant of their cooperation with the city, not only on the request for PILOTs, but also on future collaborative initiatives. We discuss the implications of our study for entities affected by PILOTs. 相似文献

This paper examines the role of financial globalization, institutions and economic growth on the development of financial sector in European countries. We use panel data covering the period of 1989−2016. Using the composite index of financial development covers various dimensions of financial market, that is, depth, access and efficiency and four-way classification of institutions as suggested by Rodrik (2005) and Law et al. (2018), the empirical results indicate that economic growth and institutional quality are positively associated with financial development. Contrarily, financial globalization hinders the process of financial sector development. The results are robust to using alternative proxies of economic growth, institutional indicators and capturing the period of financial crisis. These empirical findings suggest policy guidelines to develop financial sector by using globalization, institutional quality and economic growth as economic tools. 相似文献

Conventional aggregation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) raw scores and its interpreted impact on firm value have provided mixed evidence in the literature. We show that the value impact of CSR activities relies heavily on the industry-specific relative position of the firm. Only firms that distinguish themselves over their peers are associated with increased firm value. This finding is robust and holds for both responsible and irresponsible behaviors. Information concerns and portfolio construction can allude to a possible CSR clientele, suggesting the existence of an optimal CSR level. Our peer-effect results are robust to unobserved heterogeneity along the lines of Gormley and Matsa (2013). 相似文献

This study documents perceptions of African-American accountants (210 males and 215 females), across a wide variety of organizations, with respect to discrimination, career advancement curtailment and mentoring support, as well as provides their input regarding what undergraduate educational institutions might do to help minority students overcome career advancement barriers. Results indicate that 49 and 26% of this study’s respondents perceive racial bias and curtailment of career advancement, respectively in their current position, and 32% of them have mentors. Respondents suggested providing co-ops or internships, mentoring programs, and emphasizing the importance of oral and written communication skills to help minority students prior to their entry into the profession. Respondents further indicated that educational institutions should conduct seminars on various topics including diversity issues, handling discrimination, the transition from college to work, and corporate politics and culture. 相似文献
