The organiser of the Bicentenary Conference of the death of Adam Smith in Edinburgh on July 16–17 describes the plans for this important occasion.

'Schools and the Economy' usually examines the role of teaching economics in schools to stimulate economic awareness in pupils, Simon Harding, Head of Economics at Westminster School, turns the argument around, to reveal how markets operating inside schools would improve efficiency, increase consumer choice, weed out incompetence, and. encourage diversity.     

The urban economics of Adam Smith

The purpose of this paper is to show that location, transport costs, urbanization, and the urban hierarchy all play important roles in the economic analysis of Adam Smith.

Earned income tax credit policies: Impact and optimality: The Adam Smith Lecture, 2005

In this lecture I consider the impact and optimality of Earned Income Tax Policies. The policy issue addressed is the low labour market attachment and high incidence of poverty among certain groups. These policies have taken a central position in EU labour market policy debate and I focus on reforms over the last decade in the UK.     

Adam Smith’s theory of economic development: “Of the natural progress of opulence”

Adam Smith’s theory of economic development contained within Chapter I, Book III, of theWealth of Nations is presented in this paper. According to Smith, the natural order of development as it proceeds from primary to secondary to tertiary activity is determined by the evaluation of the relative risk and potential profit to be earned in alternative uses of capital. The emphasis of this theory is on the behavior of economic agents facing risk, rather than the amount of capital or the size of national saving or other measurable variables as in some modern approaches.
