Business format franchising has expanded rapidly, over the past 40 years as an alternative method of distribution and business development. This literature review analyses the major issues which have been the subject of in-depth research and/or significant debate. These include: the determinants of franchising in theory and practice; why franchisors normally operate both franchised and company-owned outlets, and the factors which influence the balance between them; the role and position of franchisees within the franchisor/franchisee relationship and, finally, the continuing debate surrounding the kind of regulatory framework in which it should operate. These findings are evaluated and aspects of franchising which warrant further investigation are outlined.  相似文献

A focused review of the literature is presented in support of a definition of franchising as an interorganizational form examined from the entrepreneurship perspective. Then, microeconomic and relational exchange theories provide guidance within a transaction-cost economics theoretical framework to begin the formulation of a theory of conflict in franchising. The analysis provided in this article involves business format franchising. We submit that the essential core and uniqueness of business format franchising is the relationship between the franchisee and franchisor. Our definition of franchising requires a review of individual franchisee and franchisor organizational structures. Therefore, our theoretical analysis begins with a fundamental look at the economic structural differences of the average franchisor and franchisee firms, using microeconomic theory. This review points to the potential for conflict in profit-maximizing behavior between franchisee and franchisor. The likelihood is that the differences in behavior will manifest in pricing, promotion, and new store development.Next, because most business format franchising is contractually based and long-term, we investigate the theoretical support for establishing and continuing a relationship with fundamental areas of conflict. Relational exchange theory is used for this analysis.Transaction-cost economics provides a perspective on the governance of the interorganizational form and guides us in the investigation of the ongoing state of the relationship. A key to transaction-cost analysis is shared assets in the relationship and the degree of transferability of those assets. Therefore, building and maintaining the franchise trademark becomes the theoretical focus for governance of the relationship. We propose that franchisor-provided services is the principal method of franchisor contract fulfillment and is the framework for informal governance of the relationship. The importance and adequacy of the transactions between the franchisee and franchisor affect the perceived value of the trademark and are key to continuing the franchise relationship. Finally, the conflict literature is briefly reviewed to provide a context for the discussion of conflict in franchising and to illustrate that conflict can have a positive or negative effect on the relationship.  相似文献

Auntie Anne's Pretzels, the American Red Cross, and IKEA are franchises for a social benefit, but are they social franchises? There is a diversity of perceptions of what is meant by the term social franchising but no consensus on the precise meaning. Given that social franchising is a relatively new area of research and that a crucial first step in research on any topic is to define its parameters, this article derives a set of indicators for the phenomenon of social franchising by bringing together three strands of scholarship: social franchising, commercial franchising, and social enterprise.  相似文献

Franchisee selection is a major input for franchising success. In this article, we argue that franchisee selection criteria do not differ between social and commercial franchising. They may be even more relevant for obtaining social franchising success. We discuss criteria for franchisee selection and present details of our multiple case study research to support the argument. Our study finds that evolved social franchisors do adopt similar selection criteria as commercial franchisees. In addition, constraints faced with franchisee selection among commercial franchisors are reflected also among social franchisors. We contribute to franchising literature by extending commercial franchisee selection criteria to social franchisee selection. A major managerial implication of this research is that existing franchising professionals could easily assist new social franchisors in developing their social franchisees. Future research could be study criteria weights and methodology adopted for making final selection. A new research direction could involve studying if selection criteria would differ based on (a) social cause and (b) franchisee location.  相似文献

A crucial feature of rail privatisation in Britain was franchising. Passenger services were franchised in competitive bidding processes to train operators which were meant to function with declining subsidy. The article adopts the framework of social cost-benefit analysis to examine rail privatisation’s impact on three key groups; consumers, producers and the government. It establishes that privatisation did not achieve all the supposed benefits. Further, franchising only appears to be profitable through the use of calculative accounting practices, whereby franchised train operators are portrayed as discrete business entities, whereas they are supported by very substantial, ongoing direct and indirect government subsidies.  相似文献

In recent years franchising has become a popular operating strategy for companies competing in the global marketplace. In particular, international retailing companies have increasingly been adopting franchising as a marketentry mechanism. While this growth in the popularity of franchising has led to increased research interest in the topic, there has only recently been a recognition of the need to consider franchising within the wider context of retailer internationalization activity. This paper attempts to provide a framework for the study of franchising as a strategy for retailers expanding into international markets. The discussion examines key findings to date from the established literature on international franchising concerning the motivations underlying internationalization, the internationalization process itself and the operating problems encountered. It is argued that a careful examination of findings from the international franchising literature can provide further development of retail internationalization conceptualization.  相似文献

This paper adopts a qualitative, case study approach to examine the market and partner selection processes of retailers operating internationally via franchising. Despite the increasing prevalence of franchising as an entry mode for international retailers, little research exists that considers how these firms choose franchise markets and franchise partners. The paper proposes a conceptual framework of the market and partner selection process that exhibits opportunistic and strategic behavior. Firms adopting a strategic approach undergo a market screening process before market attractiveness factors ultimately lead to the market selection decision. In the strategic partner selection process that follows, finance, business know-how, local knowledge, a shared understanding of the business and brand, and, ultimately, chemistry between the partners are the key factors influencing partner selection. In the case of an opportunistic approach to market and partner selection, the process reverses, with partner selection directly influencing market selection.  相似文献

This paper examines antecedents of ex-ante voluntary information disclosures for standardized contracts in entrepreneurial networks. Entrepreneurs (e.g., franchisors) may make such disclosures to prospective business partners in order to signal profitability of partnering, attract financial and managerial resources, and develop their entrepreneurial networks. In practice, only a fraction of franchisors make financial performance representations (FPRs), an ex-ante voluntary information disclosure to prospective franchisees. We address gaps in the signaling, voluntary information disclosure, franchising, entrepreneurship, and small- and medium-enterprise (SME) literatures. We draw on signaling theory to develop a theoretical framework and investigate factors that influence a franchisor’s disclosure decision. We evaluate hypotheses from our theoretical framework through econometric analyses of multi-sector panel data for the US franchising industry. We estimate a logit model and use lagged independent variables to address our dichotomous independent variable and potential endogeneity, respectively. Our results support the view that firms signal their quality through FPRs to attract potential business partners and expand their entrepreneurial networks. Beyond the extant literature, we find that rigorous partner qualification is another driver of voluntary information disclosure in franchising. Our findings also provide empirical support for the complementary role played by multiple quality signaling mechanisms used by franchisors and yield public policy implications for franchising.  相似文献

Until recently the development of franchising in Vietnam was hampered by a regulatory framework that did not recognize franchising as a discrete business relationship. The introduction of Vietnam's Franchise Law in 2005 provided, for the first time, a legal foundation for franchising, which was a necessary prerequisite for sector development. Although there are currently few business format franchise systems operating in Vietnam, there is an increasing presence of established international franchise systems and increasing numbers of local systems albeit at an early “product distribution” evolutionary stage. Moreover, the commercial environment for franchising is increasingly favorable: Vietnam is the fastest growing Asian economy after China and India and is experiencing strong gross domestic product growth and annual retail growth. This article addresses the development of franchising, and the challenges and opportunities for franchisers in Vietnam.  相似文献

This article canvasses practice and research in international franchising law. The franchisor law's key concepts are introduced. I then identify aspects of franchising practice that are poorly accommodated by the law. These aspects offer opportunities for productive research. I identify these aspects as follows: franchising law's reliance on contracts to regulate the relationship through all its phases, the risk that a “franchisee” is an employee, good faith, governance, and insolvency. I continue with suggestions as to why these challenges exist. The article concludes with emerging themes in franchise practice and research: e-commerce, natural disasters, sustainability, micro-franchising, and social franchising.  相似文献

Abstract

Social franchising is starting to garner more interest among researchers and practitioners as a replication approach used to help address a growing array of societal issues in both developed countries and emerging economies. While there has been a proliferation of experimentation with social franchising that is occurring on the global stage, the knowledge base remains fragmented. A comprehensive review of the empirical and practitioner literature has not been done. This article fills the void by reviewing the past decade of literature and will be of interest to governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), philanthropists, social impact investors, corporations devoted to social goals, and other key players who support the scaling up or replication of ventures that strive to address societal ills by creating pathways to health and prosperity.  相似文献

This study examines factors that inhibit the internationalization of franchising operations. The factors are classified along the dimensions of importance and difficulty. The perceptions of domestic franchisors and international franchisors are compared. The results indicate that different factors inhibit internationalization of franchising efforts depending upon the stage of the franchising process. Comparisons of the results with previous studies indicate that significant changes have occurred in the perceived importance, changes which are understandable in light of changes in franchising practices as well as changes in the international environment. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Abstract

Franchising is emerging as a highly effective strategy for growth, job creation, and economic development and is spreading rapidly around the globe. However, the pursuit of global markets by franchisors has traditionally relied on employing just three generic franchising options (i.e., direct franchising, master franchising, area development). This paper presents a more expansive view of strategic choice for franchisors by presenting first-mover, platform, and conversion strategies as additional strategic approaches that may be utilized to meet the challenge of expanding into international markets. Propositions are advanced to first suggest which strategic approaches aremost appropriate under varied foreign market conditions and then how these approaches should be linked to the three generic licensing options to create combination strategies based on franchisor experience/capabilities and similar/dissimilar markets. A contingency model of global franchising is presented, which depicts the above relationships and provides an overall framework that can assist franchisors in solving the foreign expansion and distribution question. Managerial and research implications are then provided.  相似文献

An Examination of International Retail Franchising in Emerging Markets   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
There has been an urgent call from both the franchise industry and the academic community for research on world franchising markets, specifically in the retail sector. This article is an attempt to summarize the main research that has been conducted thus far on international retail franchising. The article begins with an overview of the development of the literature and then discusses the nature and scope of emerging markets, with particular reference to their impact on the stakeholders of international retail franchising. Next, the article develops a conceptual model relating international retail franchising to its stakeholders. Then, a review of the research is divided into the areas of emerging world market: Central and Eastern Europe, Mexico and South America, Asia, and other areas that include India, Kuwait, and South Africa. The article concludes by discussing the next step to developing a research base for further understanding of emerging markets in addition to the opportunities and challenges for retail franchising and future research.  相似文献

Abstract

A key explanation for the existence of franchising as a marketing channel has its underpinnings in the information asymmetry between the firm and individual outlets. Franchising is the preferred option for outlets where information asymmetry leads to prohibitive monitoring costs within a vertically integrated system. While modern information technology has the potential to reduce monitoring costs at geographically isolated locations, several factors are likely to limit its effectiveness. Thus, the incentive to franchise these outlets should continue to exist. The paper also discusses the possible implications of the increased use of information technology in the franchised channel.  相似文献

Although multiple-unit franchising is a popular and pervasive retailing strategy throughout the world, there is a paucity of prior research examining the factors influencing the achievement of the four franchising imperatives (i.e., unit growth, uniformity, local responsiveness, and system-wide adaptation) within the context of these hybridized arrangements. Exploratory interviews were conducted (16 franchisees), and results suggest master franchising realizes the strategic imperatives of unit growth, system uniformity, system-wide adaptation, and (partially) local responsiveness. Master franchising and area development arrangements enabled system uniformity, whereas incremental and area representative arrangements promoted system-wide adaptation. Implications for practitioners and future academic researchers are presented.  相似文献

There is a growing demand by United Nations development agencies and governments for a higher engagement of firms in sustainable development goals, including that of eradicating poverty. Nevertheless, the social issue of poverty has not traditionally been covered by firms’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. In addition, there is a need to integrate theories in order to better explain pro‐poor CSR in developing countries. Relying on a review of both conceptual and empirical research articles on CSR for poverty alleviation, this study contributes to the CSR research agenda by proposing an integrated research framework for assessing and explaining a firm's contribution to poverty alleviation. Besides discussing the existing evidence, the following issues are critically analysed with the general purpose of obtaining the framework and suggesting avenues for future research: the assessment of a firm's contribution to poverty alleviation, types of pro‐poor CSR initiatives that could be adopted by firms, and the factors influencing a firm's contribution. The framework, which intends to be useful for future research, can also assist the United Nations to increase the firms’ contribution to its alleviating poverty sustainable development goal.  相似文献

This paper examines factors associated with international franchising firms’ entry modes when they enter the Chinese market. To this end, a survey was conducted to investigate the linkage between entry modes and characteristics of franchising firms. The logit model and regression analysis were used to test the hypotheses. Findings reveal four factors that significantly influence international franchisors’ entry mode choices including cultural and geographic distance, international market experience, risk spreading, and maturity of the franchising system.  相似文献

Abstract

A firm’s governance structure and business model might explain the firm’s failure or success. Franchising is a business model that has not received much attention within the corporate governance (CG) literature even though it obviously brings several unique CG challenges. Therefore, we review articles at the interface of CG and franchising. We identify and thematize the literature in four focus areas, each with a different relationship to CG: 1) traditional CG, 2) governance challenges unique to franchising, 3) governance modes, and 4) contracts. We find that the literature largely ignores the traditional view of CG when examining many aspects of franchising. We also find that the franchising literature covers governance topics when discussing governance modes, which provides a basis for developing CG theories. Altogether, our findings open a promising avenue for future research that incorporates CG into studies of franchising.  相似文献

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate how top manager attributes account for the implementation of risk-averse strategy by applying a conceptual framework based on upper echelons theory. We selected franchising as a representative risk-averse strategy based on resource scarcity, agency, and risk-sharing theories. We chose the top management team (TMT) as a proxy for the upper echelon to examine the theoretical argument. The study period was from 2000 to 2013, and 29 restaurant companies were included in the research. Related data were derived from EXECUCOMP, COMPUSTAT, Annual 10-K, and publicly accessible resources (e.g., LinkedIn and Business Week). Feasible generalized least squares and random effect regression models were used to analyze the data. The results suggested that the formal education levels of top managers negatively affected franchising implementation, whereas the tenure of TMT members positively influenced restaurant franchising.  相似文献
