China's Energy Mix

To realize China's modernization of economy,two approaches are indispensable—further industrialization and urbanization.But neither can we get to without sufficient energy supply.The problem is how we will deal with the increasing demand for energy. Nearly 70% of China's primary energy is derived from its vast coal reserves—the second in the world.But coal is an aggressive pol- lutant,and one of the main sources of greenhouse gases.What's more, most of China's coal mines are far from the centers of economic activi- ties,thus creating problematic transportation bottlenecks.Gas,which is much cleaner,is in limited supply and faces similar geographical challenges,requiring costly pipeline infrastructure.The spectacular car boom has made China the second largest consumer of oil in the world (after the U.S.).This has put considerable pressure on energy supplies,and with imports from such countries as Saudi Arabia,the geopolitical tensions are not negligible. One big highlight of the upcoming new version of China＇s Policy of Automotive Industrial Development is the new added content concerning alternative energy automobile development revealed by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in China a few days ago. Though the number of the cars powered by the alternative energy running on the road is still quite limited, it has become a must for the development of this industry in long run.     

Fuel Tax:14 Years' Expectation

Fuel tax, as the term indicates, means the tax paid by fuel consumers. The more you use a car, the more you have to pay for the fuel. As we know, petroleum is a scarce resource of strategic significance. However, China has only limited reserves of oil with an import dependency rate as high as 50%. In recent years, the demand of oil continues to soar, yet a number of problems widely exist, such as low energy utility efficiency, high per unit energy consumption, and ever-increasing pollution caused by oil consumption.     

Strong Renminbi Policy ＆ the Coming of Age of China＇s Outward FDI

This, we believe, will be the year of Beijing＇s strong renminbi policy. Despite concerns about exports, we believe Beijing will keep the CNY pegged against a strong dollar. Combined with cheaper commodity prices and the pressing need of many overseas commodity firms to deleverage, this will create the perfect opportunity for China＇s firms to significantly ramp up their outward foreign direct investment （FDI）. China＇s outward FDI flows are focussed on three sectors： energy, raw materials, and agricultural land. The beginning of 2009 has seen a flurry of deals in which Chinese investors have secured ownership or long-term supply contracts to such things.
