In this paper, we consider the problem of estimating a selected set of contrasts between v treatments using a block design consisting of b blocks of size k. Traditionally, the construction of A-optimal block designs for such situations has been carried out assuming a fixed effects model. In this paper, we show that A-optimal designs constructed under a fixed effects model are robust in the sense that these designs have maximal minimal efficiency when considered among all available designs and under all possible mixed effects models. We consider the problem of comparison of one test treatment (τ0) with a set of v control treatments (τ1, τ2, …, τv) using distance optimality [DS-optimality] criterion introduced by Sinha (1970) in some treatment-connected design settings. It turns out that the nature of DS-optimal designs is quite similar to that for the usual A−, D− and E− optimality criteria. However, the optimality problem is quite complicated in most situations. First we deal with the CRD model and derive DS-optimal allocations for a given set of treatments. The results are almost identical to the A-optimal allocations for such problems. Then we consider a block design set-up and examine the nature of DS-optimal designs. In the process, we introduce the method of weighted coverage probability and maximize the resulting expression to obtain an optimal design. Received: December 1999  相似文献

Abstract  In this paper a very natural generalization of the two-way analysis of variance rank statistic of F riedman is given. The general distribution-free test procedure based on this statistic for the effect of J treatments in a random block design can be applied in general two-way layouts without interactions and with different numbers of the continuous observations per cell provided the design scheme is connected. The asymptotic distribution under the null hypothesis of the test statistic is derived. A comparison with the method of m rankings of B enard and van E lteren is made. The disadvantage of B enard and van E lteren's test procedure is that the number of observations per block does influence the statistic twice, namely firstly by the number itself, as it should, and see ondly by the level of the ranks which will be different in different blocks if the numbers of observations per block are different. The proposed test statistic is not sensitive to differences in the levels of the ranks caused by the different numbers of observations per block. The test is derived from considerhg the K ruskal -W allis statistics per block.
Finally, the results of simulation experiments are given. The simulation is carried out for three designs and a number of normal location alternatives and gives some information about the power of the suggested test procedure. A comparison is made with B enard and van E lteren's test and with the classical analysis of variance technique. For some simple orthogonal designs the exact null distributions of B enard and van E lteren's test and the proposed test are compared.  相似文献

A problem of allocation of measurements for a linear calibration process is considered in this article. It is assumed that a total of N measurements are made some of which may be measurements on two distinct standards, while the remaining measurements are on m different unknown specimens. We discuss allocation of the N measurements for the two standards and m unknown specimens based on A-optimality criterion, which is applied to asymptotic variances of maximum likelihood estimators for the true values of unknown specimens. It can be shown that the optimal allocation depends on the true values of unknown specimens. Hence, the user may resort to locally or Bayesian A-optimal measurement designs. Some practical solution is presented. Furthermore, the impact of prior on the allocation is also discussed.  相似文献

We present general results for finding or boundingt maxB , the maximum number of arbitrary whole blocks of observations which can be removed from a block design, and still leave all of the elementary treatment contrasts estimable. The block sizes may be larger than the number of treatments. The results are applied to BBDs, reinforced BIBDs and BBDs, BTIBDs, and a series of variance balanced incomplete block designs with two block sizes. Also given for most of these designs, are results fort max, the maximum number of arbitrary, scattered observations that can become unavailable, and still leave all of the elementary treatment contrasts estimable. The work was undertaken while Dr. Whittinghill was visiting Ohio State University, and supported by a grant from the Natural Sciences Division, Colby College, Waterville, Maine.  相似文献

Optimal designs under general dependence structures are usually difficult to specify theoretically or find algorithmically. However, they can sometimes be found for a specific dependence structure and a particular parameter value. In this paper, a class of generalized binary block designs with t treatments and b blocks of size k>t is considered. Each block consists of h consecutive complete blocks and, at the end, an incomplete block of size kht (if k > ht). For a suitable number of blocks, a universally optimal design is found for a first-order stationary autoregressive process with positive correlations. Optimal generalized binary designs and balanced block designs are also considered. Some constructions for a universally optimal design are described. A negative dependence parameter, and some other dependence structures, are also considered.  相似文献

We establish the inferential properties of the mean-difference estimator for the average treatment effect in randomised experiments where each unit in a population is randomised to one of two treatments and then units within treatment groups are randomly sampled. The properties of this estimator are well understood in the experimental design scenario where first units are randomly sampled and then treatment is randomly assigned but not for the aforementioned scenario where the sampling and treatment assignment stages are reversed. We find that the inferential properties of the mean-difference estimator under this experimental design scenario are identical to those under the more common sample-first-randomise-second design. This finding will bring some clarifications about sampling-based randomised designs for causal inference, particularly for settings where there is a finite super-population. Finally, we explore to what extent pre-treatment measurements can be used to improve upon the mean-difference estimator for this randomise-first-sample-second design. Unfortunately, we find that pre-treatment measurements are often unhelpful in improving the precision of average treatment effect estimators under this design, unless a large number of pre-treatment measurements that are highly associative with the post-treatment measurements can be obtained. We confirm these results using a simulation study based on a real experiment in nanomaterials.  相似文献

Sufficient conditions are found for designs, derived from completely symmetric designs by deleting binary blocks, to be E-optimal. Sufficient conditions are also found for E-optimality of designs obtained from other E-optimal designs by deleting all blocks forming a balanced incomplete block design on a subset of the treatments. The results include many binary and non-binary designs for which E-optimality was previously unknown.  相似文献

This article presents discussions on the optimal and robust designs for trigonometric regression models under different optimality criteria. First, we investigate the classical Q-optimal designs for estimating the response function in a full trigonometric regression model with a given order. The equivalencies of Q-, A-, and G-optimal designs for trigonometric regression in general are also articulated. Second, we study minimax designs and their implementation in the case of trigonometric approximation under Q-, A-, and D-optimality. Then, We indicate the existence of the symmetric designs that are D-optimal minimax designs for general trigonometric regression models, and prove the existence of the symmetric designs that are Q- or A-optimal minimax designs for two particular trigonometric regression models under certain conditions.  相似文献

In a situation where the given set of parameters (b, k andv) precludes the existence of any known optimal block designs, but an optimal block design is known to exist with parametersb, k andv*>v, a new design is shown to be useful. This (b, k, v) design is obtained from the (b, k, v*) optimal design by collapsing the classes of a suitable paritition of the treatment set (of the latter design) to treatments (of the former). We call the new design a quotient of the original design. Although the quotient is non binary and unequally replicated, it turns out to beE-optimal within the class of all proper and connected designs withb, k andv, provided the replication number of the optimal design we start with is not too large.  相似文献

Summary In this paper we consider the problem of determiningE-optimal block designs for experimental situations in whichv treatments are to be tested onn experimental units arranged inb blocks and where the block sizes and number of replications assigned to the treatments are allowed to vary. Some sufficient conditions are obtained for designs to beE-optimal in these situations and methods for constructing designs which satisfy the sufficient conditions given are also derived.  相似文献

Summary The paper investigates the particular case of symmetrical block designs with block size two. It is shown that the component-wise Kronecker product of two such designs (c.f. Mukerjee 1981) is connected if and only if the numbers of treatments are relatively prime.  相似文献

The effectiveness of randomized complete block design   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper examines the relative efficiency of randomized complete block design as compared with that of completely randomized design. The most widely used measure of relative efficiency considers only the error variances of the two designs, therefore it does not provide the complete information concerning the sensitivity of the experiment in the final results. We study three alternative criteria related to the sensitivity issue and design planning consideration. The proposed relative measures employ the p -value, Scheffé confidence interval estimation and power of both designs. The distinct feature of this study is the focus on the estimated relative efficiency measures and their relation with the coefficient of partial determination between responses and block effects, given that treatment effects are present in the models. Furthermore, informative visual representations and numerical assessments of various aspects of their properties are also presented.  相似文献

The use of polygonal designs is motivated by the desire to avoid the selection of contiguous units in a sample from an ordered finite population. However very little is known about polygonal designs that have block size 5 or more. We present new polygonal designs with blocks of sizes 5 through 10, including the first designs with block sizes 9 and 10. For block sizes 5 through 7, we identify, with one possible exception, all values for the number of varieties for which a polygonal design exists. Received January 2001  相似文献

Dey and Midha (Biometrika 83(2):484–489, 1996) constructed optimal block designs for complete diallel cross experiment using triangular partially balanced incomplete block designs with two associate classes. They listed optimal block designs for the lines in the range from 5 ≤ v ≤ 10. In this paper, we are also proposing additional optimal block designs for complete diallel cross experiment using two associate class partially balanced block designs for some additional values of v. Our method yields designs for proper and non-proper settings for complete diallel cross experiments. The proper and non proper designs are optimal in the sense of Kempthorne (Genetics 41:451–459, 1956) and non-proper designs are universally optimal in the sense of Kiefer (A survey of statistical design and linear models, North Holland, Amsterdam, 1975). The list of practically important designs is also given.  相似文献

If in the usual model for repeated measurements designs no period effect is present, then the information matrix for the estimation of residual effects no longer has row- and column-sums zero (see Cheng and Wu 1980, 1983). This means that the usual criterion for universal optimality cannot be applied. However, Giovagnoli and Wynn (1985) and Giovagnoli, Pukelsheim and Wynn (1985) showed a criterion which ensures universal optimality in a full-rank model. The present note shows that balanced uniform repeated measurements designs fulfill this criterion.  相似文献

In literature, Williams Square change-over designs balanced for first residual effects of treatments have been proved to be universally optimal. Here, an attempt has been made to show that these designs are robust against missing of last α [≤v−1; v being the number of periods in the design for v treatments] observations from an experimental unit. Four topics, selected from the range of statistical subjects with current relevance for agricultural research are considered. The first is concerned with the need and usefulness of efficient incomplete block designs for any number of treatments, either equireplicate or with different number of replicates. The second one is a presentation of linear prediction procedures for phenomena with spatially random behaviour and its generalization towards kriging. Next, a reparametrization of a general four–parameter family of growth curves is recommended, leading to numerically stable parameter estimation for RICHARDS' functions and additional special cases. Finally, the modelling of factorials with continuous response and of log–linear relationships for frequencies is proposed to be handled on the same footing, with preference for an alternative criteria of model deviance over test critera or Cp–like measures.  相似文献
