In Section I, I criticize the view, implied by the concept of rational economic man, that feelings are inherently opposed to rationality. I attempt to show that emotions or feelings are essential to the proper functioning of reason, rational objectivity, and practical rationality or rational decision making. In addition, I argue that emotions can help to resolve certain ethical dilemmas. In Section II, I consider business writers who criticize business for overemphasizing the head at the expense of feelings or the heart. In Section III, I discuss the connection between material self-interest (as manifested in trade) – a concept of rational economic man – and business virtues.  相似文献

Consumer organizations have traditionally been concerned with protecting, informing, and educating the "weak" consumers. These policies were deemed necessary because of the unequal power balance and conflicts of interests between consumers and producers. Since there are also conflicts between the interests of nature on the one hand, and consumers and producers on the other, this article discusses the rationale of consumer organizations' involvement in environmental issues while considering their original objectives. More specifically, it is aimed at identifying the commitment of several European consumer organizations with respect to environmental issues during the past two decades in order to assess whether and how environmental issues are internalized in consumer policy across time.  相似文献

This paper examines the dynamic relations among foreign exchange rates, savings, and investment ratio for a sample of 25 countries from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. We find that the savings rate and the investment rate are cointegrated of order (1, −1). This result is consistent with the literature on the savings–investment relations and therefore confirms the validity of the Feldstein–Horioka puzzle. Using country‐specific and longitudinal panel vector autoregressive models, we show that historical savings–investment differentials do not help explain foreign exchange rates. We demonstrate, however, that foreign exchange rates and trade balance ratio impact the difference between savings and investments. Specifically, depreciation in the domestic currency would cause the savings–investment difference to widen.  相似文献

One of Alfred Marshall's most important contributions was that the marginal buyer in the marginal market ultimately determines the price of a good. However, until recently, little attention has been paid to the fact that the location of the marginal buyer is not fixed. In the case of oil, the marginal market has shifted several times in the postwar period. This has created a number of complications in the analysis of market behavior. Social marketing has experienced substantial growth over the last 3 decades and its utilization has spread into various areas of social and public life. However, certain barriers to its expansion do still remain. Thus, a systematic overview of studies on this field will contribute towards a better understanding of the subject and its progress thus far. This study presents the results of bibliometric analysis of the social marketing field defining the academic area subject to study, along with its respective bibliographical sources, based on publication counts, citation, co-citation, and co-word analysis. The paper reports on the most important and salient results of an investigation which was carried out in the Netherlands in 1980/1981. The object of the research was to establish the actual number of borrowers with a problematic debt situation and to provide an answer to the question of how the problems have arisen and what their consequences are for the borrowers and their families. The research was divided into two parts:
  • --an investigation of the nature, extent, and causes of problematic debt situations (the survey part)
  • --an investigation of their consequences (the qualitative part).
  • In the explanation of how a problematic debt situation comes about, institutional, socioeconomic, personality, and decision-behaviour factors were taken into account. The results of both investigations provide an impetus for policy-makers to modify their policies aimed at preventing problematic debt situations from arising. Some starting points for such a re-orientation are discussed in this paper. The first point relates to the predictability of problematic debt situations and the implementation of an early warning system; the second point relates to the acceptance policy of financial institutions, in particular the use and functioning of credit score systems; the third point suggests restraint in the granting of additional credit to borrowers who have already taken out one or more credit; the fourth point relates to advice which could be provided to improve borrowers' (information-seeking) behaviour and level of knowledge.  相似文献

    This study assessed the relationships between the Big Five dimensions of personality and individual happiness with three indicators of shopping and spending for non-grocery items using a sample of 660 U.S. adults. The data from an online survey showed that all five of the Big Five traits correlated positively with self-reported happiness, even controlling for the effects of age and gender. Regression analysis showed, however, that the positive relationships between happiness and Agreeableness and Openness to Experience were no longer significant, indicating that they are real, but redundant to the other traits. The correlations also showed that happiness, Openness to Experience, and Extraversion correlated positively with the three shopping indicators. Finally, happiness appears to have a direct effect with shopping and mediates the influence of Emotional Stability, Agreeableness, and Extraversion on happiness.  相似文献
