The emerging influence wielded on Japanese businesses by the sokaiya , or extortioners, raises issues not just of bribery but more fundamentally of corporate governance and transparency in the conduct of business. "If it were true that the Japanese companies in question were otherwise conducting their businesses in perfectly ethical ways, then sokaiya would not have any leverage". This article presents the results of an exploratory study on the Japanese tourist perceptions of service in food and drinking establishments in Australia. Eight areas of service were investigated: the service providers' professionalism, friendliness, politeness, information giving, helpfulness, ability to participate in customers' needs, ability to speak Japanese language, and ability to provide customers with prompt service. The findings suggest that only two areas of service need to be improved: the service providers' ability to participate in customers' needs and to speak Japanese language. The implications of the findings are outlined.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to assess the impact of Japanese consumer electronics companies within Malaysia. Research between January and April 1994 revealed the interdependence of a production network not only in Malaysia but within the Asia-Pacific region as a whole, and serves to illustrate the integration of trade and investment in Malaysia's industrial development. While, undoubtedly, the surge of Japanese foreign direct investment (FDI) into Malaysia's electronics industry between 1986 and 1990 has had enormous positive effects upon infrastructure development and employment creation, the results of this study question whether Japanese FDI is now contributing to the much needed structural up-grading of this industry. Central to this discussion are the underlying strategies of Japanese multinational corporations (MNCs) which have relocated in Malaysia.  相似文献

This paper investigates the relationship of automobile attributes and household characteristics to consumer preferences for Japanese cars. The analysis was confined to households that purchased new cars in 1986 and employed two-stage probit analysis. Results indicate that the coefficients of five automobile quality attributes are statistically significant while the coefficients of most household characteristics are not significant. Households interested in more fuel efficient and heavier cars as well as cars with lower depreciation rates and a lower frequency of repair are more likely to buy Japanese than non-Japanese cars. The fact that households buy Japanese automobiles because of quality considerations not because they are small has implications for the U.S. automobile industry which faces increased competition in a global economy.  相似文献

The article describes how the external forces of Japanese culture, industrial organization, and government intervention support managerial and organizational learning. It provides an overview of the culturally explicit philosophies that govern and stimulate learning in Japan, then explains how these philosophies are exhibited in Japanese management practice today. A model is presented which demonstrates the relationships among external forces, philosophical origins, management practice, and managerial and organizational learning.
